But why settle for the ordinary when you can elevate it? This recipe takes everything you adore about classic deviled eggs and infuses it with the soulful zest of a traditional Shakshuka, transforming a simple appetizer into a gourmet experience.

The beauty of this fusion lies in the interplay of textures and tastes. Imagine the rich, smooth egg yolk filling, now kissed with the smoky, spicy notes of harissa. Then, picture that creamy base topped with a vibrant, intensely flavored tomato jam, bursting with garlic and fire-roasted goodness. This dish isn’t just about combining two recipes; it’s about crafting a harmonious blend where each component enhances the other, creating a truly memorable appetizer.

To create this innovative dish, you’ll need a selection of fresh and flavorful ingredients, carefully chosen to bring out the best of both worlds:

  • Hard-Boiled Eggs: The foundation of any great deviled egg.
  • Mayonnaise & Greek Yogurt: For that signature creamy texture and a hint of tang.
  • Harissa: The star spice, delivering smoky, earthy heat characteristic of Shakshuka.
  • Cilantro: Fresh herbs to brighten the flavors and add a pop of color.
  • Fire-Roasted Tomatoes: Essential for the deep, complex flavor of our tomato jam.
  • Garlic: Aromatic and indispensable for both the filling and the jam.

Expert Tips for Crafting Perfect Shakshuka Deviled Eggs

Achieving deviled egg perfection, especially with a creative spin like Shakshuka, requires attention to detail. Follow these tips to ensure your unique appetizers are a resounding success:

  1. Mastering Hard-Boiled Eggs: The journey to perfect deviled eggs begins with perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs. To achieve beautifully set whites and creamy, vibrant yolks every time, place a dozen eggs in a large stockpot and cover them with at least an inch of cold water. Bring the water to a rapid, rolling boil over high heat. As soon as the water reaches a full boil, turn off the heat, cover the pot tightly with a lid, and let the eggs sit in the hot water for precisely 10 to 12 minutes. This method ensures even cooking without overcooking, which can lead to that undesirable green ring around the yolk. Once the time is up, immediately drain the hot water and transfer the eggs to an ice bath for several minutes. This rapid cooling halts the cooking process and makes the eggs much easier to peel, yielding smooth, blemish-free whites crucial for elegant deviled eggs.
  2. Sourcing or Crafting Harissa: Harissa is the backbone of the Shakshuka flavor in this recipe, providing its distinctive smoky heat and complexity. For ultimate convenience, a high-quality store-bought harissa paste works wonderfully and is readily available in most well-stocked grocery stores or international aisles. Look for varieties with a good balance of heat and flavor. However, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to truly customize the spice level and depth, making a big batch of homemade harissa at home is a rewarding endeavor. It allows you to control the freshness of the ingredients and tailor the blend to your personal preference, offering a truly artisanal touch to your deviled eggs.
  3. The Art of Tomato Jam: The savory tomato jam is the crowning glory of these deviled eggs, providing a burst of sweet, tangy, and subtly spicy flavor that contrasts beautifully with the creamy filling. While it can be made and served immediately, its flavors truly deepen and meld when given time to rest. We highly recommend preparing the tomato jam a day or two before you plan to assemble and serve the deviled eggs. This allows the various aromatic components—garlic, spices, and fire-roasted tomatoes—to fully integrate, resulting in a more complex, richer, and utterly irresistible jam that will elevate your deviled eggs from delicious to extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shakshuka Deviled Eggs

We’ve gathered some common questions to help you perfect and enjoy your Easy Shakshuka Deviled Eggs:

I can’t find harissa at the grocery store, what’s a good substitute?

While harissa offers a unique flavor profile, if you’re unable to find it, a good substitute for the spicy kick would be Sriracha. Start with a smaller amount and add more to taste, as Sriracha can be quite potent. Alternatively, you could use a pinch of smoked paprika and a dash of cayenne pepper for a similar smoky and spicy effect, though the depth of flavor might vary slightly.

Can I substitute mayo to make it Vegan?

Yes, absolutely! To make these deviled eggs suitable for a vegan diet (assuming you are using a plant-based egg substitute or serving for non-vegans who want a vegan mayo option), you can seamlessly use a high-quality vegan mayonnaise as an alternative. Many brands offer excellent vegan mayo products that deliver the same creamy texture and tangy flavor without any animal products.

Can I make these Easy Shakshuka Deviled Eggs ahead of time?

Yes, these deviled eggs are an excellent make-ahead appetizer! You can prepare and assemble them up to three days in advance. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness and prevent drying. For the best flavor and texture, allow them to come to room temperature for about 15-20 minutes prior to serving. This slight warming helps to enhance the creamy consistency of the yolk filling and brightens the flavors of the tomato jam.

I had leftover tomato jam, what do you recommend we use it on?

Leftover tomato jam is a delicious bonus! It’s incredibly versatile and can elevate many dishes. I highly recommend spreading it on scrambled eggs for a gourmet breakfast, slathering it onto a grilled cheese sandwich for an elevated comfort food experience, or even spooning it over a seared steak or roasted chicken for an instant flavor boost. It also makes a fantastic accompaniment to cheese boards or a spread for toast and crackers.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 14oz Can fire roasted tomatoes, drained, and excess water squeezed out (*basically you want to get rid of any liquid!)
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 4 tbsp Harissa, divided
  • 3/4 tsp Paprika, divided
  • 1/4 cup Chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet preheated to medium heat, add the olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, 2 tbsp of the harissa, and 1/2 tsp of the paprika. Cook, stirring often and breaking up tomatoes with a spoon, until tomato mixture is mostly dry and flavors are concentrated, about 13 to 15 minutes.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the cilantro, 1/4 tsp of the salt, and remaining 2 tbsp of harissa. Let the tomato jam cool for 10 minutes and then transfer to a bowl.
  3. While the tomato jam cools, cut the hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise. Carefully scoop out the yolks using the end of a spoon and place the yolks into a food processor. Set the whites aside. Next, add in the mayonnaise, yogurt, and remaining 1/2 tsp plus 1/8 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp paprika to the food processor.
  4. Process the egg yolk mixture until smooth, about 30 seconds, stopping to scrape down sides as needed. Spoon the mixture into a ziplock plastic bag, and snip one corner of the bag to make a small hole. Pipe the yolk mixture evenly into the egg white halves.
  5. Top each egg with about 1/2 tsp of the prepared tomato jam. Garnish with fresh cilantro. Store any remaining tomato jam in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
