A Taste of BlogHer Food Miami 2014

Embracing the Experience: My Unforgettable BlogHer Food Miami Journey

Just a few weeks ago, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of Miami for the annual BlogHer Food Conference. This prestigious event, a true highlight for food bloggers and culinary enthusiasts alike, marked my second attendance, following a memorable debut in Austin the previous year. My excitement for Miami was palpable; I eagerly anticipated reconnecting with cherished friends, forging new connections with fellow foodies, savoring the city’s iconic Cuban sandwiches, and, of course, expanding my professional network within the dynamic world of food blogging.

Returning to BlogHer Food as a seasoned attendee, I noticed a distinct shift in my perspective. No longer a newcomer, I felt a sense of seasoned confidence, perhaps even an “upper blogger classman” status, if you will. While my initial intention mirrored that of my first conference – to diligently learn and network – I soon realized I had underestimated the most profound aspect of these gatherings: the holistic experience. Beyond the valuable tips and tricks for growing my platform, be it increasing Pinterest engagement or mastering video content, the true essence of the conference lay in fully embracing every moment. This year, my focus wasn’t just on accumulating knowledge but on allowing myself to truly enjoy the journey, to let go, and to absorb the rich tapestry of interactions and discoveries Miami offered.

So, instead of a traditional rundown of sessions and workshops, this recap invites you to join me on a personal voyage through my BlogHer Food Miami experience. Are you ready to dive into the flavors, friendships, and fun that defined this extraordinary culinary adventure?

Day One: A Warm Miami Welcome and Unforgettable Connections

Our Miami adventure began even before the official conference kick-off, a decision I wholeheartedly recommend. Arriving on Wednesday night gave us a full Thursday to soak in the local ambiance. With the main conference hotel nestled downtown, a quick 10-minute cab ride transported us to the electrifying heart of South Beach, where the city truly pulsed with life.

Our first order of business? A delightful brunch at the renowned The Front Porch Cafe. Alongside my wonderful friends Cassie, Erin, Megan, and Meagan, we pulled up chairs, ordered steaming coffees, and indulged in delicious migas. The gentle ocean breeze and lively chatter provided the perfect start to our Miami escapade. It was moments like these, sharing stories and laughter over good food, that truly highlighted the magic of these conferences – the priceless opportunity to connect with fellow creatives who understand and share your passion.

Next on our agenda was an eagerly anticipated visit to the beach! However, Mother Nature had other plans, showing her cranky side with looming storm clouds. We managed a swift, albeit spirited, eight-and-a-half minutes of adorable beach photos before the heavens unleashed a downpour. It was a rude interruption, but even a fleeting moment on the iconic South Beach sands was a treasure.

Retreating to the comfort of our hotel, our conversations shifted from beach fun to more pressing topics like SEO strategies for blog growth and, perhaps humorously, the hotel’s tornado-safe basement, a testament to the unpredictable weather. But our spirits were quickly rekindled as we were whisked away to our inaugural conference party, an exquisite affair hosted by the fantastic teams at Stonyfield, Organic Valley, and Applegate. The evening was a sensory delight: effervescent bubbles, a curated selection of cheeses, and a sprawling smorgasbord featuring succulent organic lamb chops and authentic Cuban sandwiches. All of this culinary perfection was expertly washed down with a truly heavenly Bacon Bloody Mary, setting a high bar for the social events to follow.

The night culminated in an absolutely fabulous penthouse party at the stunning residence of Amanda and Jenny, graciously hosted by CliqueMe. There’s truly nothing quite like sipping fine red wine, indulging in fresh sushi, and meticulously crafting your own ice cream sundae, all while gazing upon the breathtaking, sparkling skyline of Miami. These moments of relaxed camaraderie and shared delight were precisely what made the BlogHer Food conference so much more than a series of scheduled talks.

Day Two: Culinary Delights and Creative Inspiration

Friday marked the official commencement of conference sessions and the bustling activity of the vendor booths. While a wealth of knowledge awaited within the conference halls, a few of us couldn’t resist another culinary detour to South Beach for lunch at the renowned Southern restaurant, Yard Bird. As a part-owner of a soul food restaurant myself, I was eager to experience firsthand what all the buzz surrounding Yard Bird was about. The rustic charm of its atmosphere immediately captivated me. Their blackberry bourbon lemonade was an incredibly refreshing counterpoint to the rich flavors of the pork belly pimento sliders – an absolute, unforgettable culinary masterpiece. I may or may not have had to roll myself out of there, utterly satisfied.

With Miami’s weather still playing hard to get (seriously, Miami?), we headed back to the hotel for more enriching sessions, followed by some much-needed relaxation before the evening’s packed schedule of activities began. The conference offered a fantastic blend of formal learning and informal networking, proving that some of the best insights come from casual conversations.

Later, Cassie and I made a quick stop at the Go Veggie happy hour, eager to support our fabulous friend, Amie of The Healthy Apple. Amie is an absolute rock star, brimming with infectious life and energy. Her blog consistently serves as a wonderful reminder to prioritize fruits and vegetables in my diet, a gentle nudge towards healthier living that I always appreciate.

Then, off we went, like a prom dress, to the highly anticipated Wisconsin Cheese “Bloggers By the Bay” party! Miraculously, Mother Nature finally untwisted her unmentionables, and the weather cleared, gracing us with the first truly official, breathtaking sunset picture of our entire trip. The Wisconsin Cheese party was held at an incredibly chic private villa, a space so stunning it earned a mental note for my next Miami visit. No detail was overlooked, from the panoramic views of the bay to the exquisite wine and cheese pairings meticulously explained by Food Network Executive Chef Rob Bleifer and Food Network Culinary & Beverage Editor Rupa Bhattacharya. It was an evening of unparalleled sophistication and gourmet delight, truly a highlight for any food blogger.

But of course, the fun didn’t stop there. Megan, Katie, and I then boogied over to the Stitch Fix party to support our dear friend Lauren and to dive into the latest trends in styling and personal fashion. I absolutely adore Stitch Fix; I even had a session with one of their amazing stylists, Jackie, before I left for Miami! Their team is incredibly talented, and it was wonderfully refreshing to chat about non-food topics for an evening, exploring another facet of creative expression and personal branding.

Day Three: Reflection, Relaxation, and a Grand Finale

Saturday marked our final full day of BlogHer Food Miami sessions, a time for soaking in last-minute insights and reflecting on the conference’s evolving nature. My friend Heidi articulated a sentiment I deeply resonated with, suggesting that over the next few years, we’re likely to see a rise in smaller, more boutique conferences. There’s an undeniable richness in learning through casual, heartfelt conversations with fellow peers over a bourbon lemonade, a depth often missing from larger, more sterile conference rooms. This informal exchange of ideas and experiences often proves far more valuable than structured presentations.

For lunch, we returned to the magnificent penthouse of Amanda and Jenny. This time, however, the sun was shining brightly, casting a golden glow over the proceedings! It was a truly indulgent experience: we received relaxing massages, savored more delicious Cuban sandwiches, and, of course, devoured an array of irresistible mini buttercream cupcakes. This laid-back gathering perfectly encapsulated the spirit of connection and enjoyment that had become the hallmark of my BlogHer Food Miami experience.

And then, to the beach! Despite a brisk 40 mph wind, nothing was going to deter this girl from a proper beach day. All I wanted was to “marinate” on the beach, to simply exist in the moment, reflecting on the incredible journey, and marinate we absolutely did! The feeling of the sand and the sound of the waves, even with the wind, was the perfect antidote to the bustling conference schedule.

After our refreshing beach escapade, Megan, Annalise, and I made a strategic pit stop at Havana 1957. This authentic Cuban eatery provided the perfect evening’s sustenance with incredible mojitos, savory Cuban chicken and rice, and, dare I say, the best tres leches of my entire life! It was a true immersion into Miami’s rich cultural tapestry and a delightful way to spend our last full evening.

With a click of the heels, it was time for the grand closing party. But what’s a closing party without a little impromptu dance party action in the elevator? A huge thank you to Cassie for capturing these hilarious and joyful moments!

The official closing celebration was held at the trendy Cafeina Lounge. We sipped on exquisite Cadillac margaritas, dined on delicious sliders and refreshing fresh pasta salad. But the absolute best part of the night was finally capturing that much-anticipated “condo curse reunion” picture with my amazing friends! It was a perfect culmination of a weekend filled with learning, laughter, and lasting memories.

Reflections on a Rewarding Culinary Journey

It’s truly difficult to articulate how profoundly rewarding it was to spend a long weekend surrounded by my fellow blogging comrades. Each and every individual I encountered at BlogHer Food Miami is not only incredibly talented in their craft but also a constant source of inspiration with their boundless creative genius. From sharing recipe ideas to discussing the latest in SEO and food photography, these interactions are invaluable. I can genuinely say that I am a better person, both personally and professionally, for having the privilege of knowing such an amazing group of ladies and gents who share a deep passion for food and storytelling. The bonds forged and the insights gained far surpassed any individual session or workshop.

This BlogHer Food Miami experience underscored the immense value of attending industry conferences not just for professional development, but for the priceless human connection. It’s about building a supportive community, drawing inspiration from diverse perspectives, and creating memories that last a lifetime. Until next time, Miami – you’ve truly captured my heart, and I eagerly anticipate our next culinary and creative adventure!
