Upon arrival at SLC, you have the option to arrange for a shuttle service directly to the resort. However, with a six-month-old in tow, we opted for the flexibility of a rental car. This allowed us to explore at our own pace and easily transport all our family essentials, a choice we highly recommend for families with young children.

Our choice for accommodations, the Powderhorn Lodge, proved to be an ideal sanctuary for our family. Perfectly situated in the heart of Solitude Village, Powderhorn Lodge is a collection of inviting condos designed with families in mind. We settled into a spacious one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit that felt immediately like home. It featured a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable dining area, a large master bedroom, and a generous balcony offering stunning mountain views. This setup was invaluable for us as parents, providing ample space to spread out and relax after a day of activities.
Having a full kitchen allowed us to prepare meals and snacks, which is incredibly helpful for managing specific dietary needs or simply saving on dining out. The convenience of a dishwasher for bottles and an extra loft bed nearby, which we ingeniously converted into a changing area for Charlie, truly highlighted the family-friendly design of the condo. The ability to have separate living and sleeping areas provided much-needed privacy and quiet, especially when traveling with a baby. This practical and comfortable arrangement made our stay at Solitude effortless and truly enjoyable.

Even though our little Charlie was too young to hit the slopes, Mr. B and I relished the opportunity to explore Solitude’s magnificent terrain. One of the primary reasons we chose Solitude for our ski trip was the incredible access to diverse terrain combined with virtually non-existent lift lines. For experienced skiers accustomed to the bustling resorts of Colorado, this was an absolute revelation and a breath of fresh air. We maximized our time on the snow, completing more runs and easily transitioning from one side of the mountain to the other without encountering crowds, often enjoying fresh tracks all to ourselves. This rare luxury truly makes Solitude a skier’s paradise.
On Mr. B’s inaugural visit to Solitude, I made sure to guide him to Honeycomb Canyon, celebrated for some of the best bowl terrain in the region. The exhilarating runs here are complemented by truly stunning panoramic views that are far from shabby. It’s a place where the grandeur of nature meets the thrill of the descent, creating an unforgettable skiing experience.
For families with younger children or beginners, the Moonbeam base area is an absolute must-visit. This dedicated zone features an inviting bunny hill and numerous gentle green runs, providing a safe and encouraging environment for kids to learn and build their confidence on skis. We can’t wait to bring Charlie back when she’s old enough to experience the joy of crushing these slopes herself!

Every morning, our family tradition began with a pleasant stroll around the corner from our condo to St. Bernard’s for their continental skiers’ breakfast. This welcoming spot offers a delightful smorgasbord of fresh fruit, assorted bagels and pastries, and a customizable yogurt bar. While the continental spread is excellent, we highly recommend ordering their hot plate, which features a satisfying mix of crispy bacon, savory sausage, perfectly cooked potatoes, and eggs. Be sure to snag a seat by the cozy fireplace and savor a warm cup of coffee – it’s the perfect way to fuel up before hitting the slopes.
Roundhouse: Himalayan Flavors with Mountain Views
During our ski days, Mr. B and I made it a point to stop for lunch at Roundhouse. As its name suggests, Roundhouse is a unique circular lodge, offering a warm and inviting ambiance with a central fire pit and expansive, sweeping views of the ski resort. Conveniently located just off the Moonbeam and Eagle Express lifts, this restaurant specializes in Himalayan and Wasatch-inspired mountain cuisine. It’s the kind of place that nourishes not only your hunger but also your soul. For lunch, don’t miss their exquisite vegetable curry, the unique curry french fries, and the refreshing chickpea salad – truly distinctive flavors that stand out.
Last Chance Southwest Grill: Sunny Tacos and Après-Ski Fun
Another fantastic spot for either lunch or après-ski, located conveniently by the Apex Lift, is the Last Chance Southwest Grill. Its proximity to the bunny hill made it the perfect choice for a family outing with Charlie; we even took her up the lift for a fun adventure before settling down for some delicious tacos. As an enthusiast of outdoor patios, I could have happily spent the entire day here. It’s an ideal place to relax under the sun, enjoy a cold beer, and savor some excellent Mexican-inspired dishes in a lively, casual setting.
Thirsty Squirrel: The Local’s Favorite Après-Ski
For those in need of a lively après-ski refreshment, the Thirsty Squirrel is the place to be. Conveniently located directly across from St. Bernard’s, this popular spot is a local’s favorite. It offers a vibrant atmosphere complete with live bands and ample space to rest tired feet after a long day on the slopes. Nothing quite beats the satisfaction of sipping a cold pale ale here after carving laps in Honeycomb Canyon, sharing stories and soaking in the convivial mountain spirit.
Honeycomb Grill: Contemporary Cuisine for Family Dinners
When it comes to a delightful family dinner, Honeycomb Grill offers an excellent option. Situated within Solitude Village and, once again, just a short walk from our condo, this restaurant provides a refined yet comfortable setting with lovely mountain views – and, of course, baby views from our table! Honeycomb Grill serves contemporary cuisine that is both delicious and thoughtfully prepared. I was particularly impressed with their extensive wine selection, the fresh tuna poke, a perfectly cooked steak, their hearty burger, and the flavorful meatballs. It’s a versatile dining experience that caters well to both adults and children seeking a quality meal.
The Yurt: An Unforgettable Backcountry Fine Dining Experience
Parents, if you can manage to sneak away for an evening, dining at The Yurt is an absolute must-do experience! This was, without a doubt, one of the most exceptional meals I’ve enjoyed in a very long time. The sheer artistry of delivering such a sophisticated fine dining experience in a remote yurt, utilizing propane for cooking, is truly astonishing. I was genuinely blown away by the entire evening. One important detail to note: the experience begins with a beautiful 1/4-mile hike through the serene forest to reach the yurt itself. This enchanting stroll adds to the magic and anticipation of the meal, making it an adventure from start to finish.
For our memorable four-course dinner, Chef Craig Gerome prepared a truly exquisite menu:
First Course: A vibrant plate of winter chicories, complemented by creamy Laura Chenel goat cheese from Sonoma County, crispy fried breadcrumbs, toasted pine nuts, a drizzle of barrel-aged balsamic vinegar, and rich olive oil. A perfect balance of textures and flavors.
Second Course: A luxurious Meyer lemon-saffron risotto, featuring succulent Nantucket diver sea scallops, sweet Dungeness crab claw, and fragrant fennel. A harmonious blend of delicate seafood and aromatic flavors.
Third Course: A masterfully prepared dish of tender beef short rib and a gold-grade American Wagyu New York strip steak from Snake River Farms in Twin Falls, ID. Accompanied by crisp white asparagus, sweet cipollini onions, a smooth rutabaga puree, delicate fried leeks, and a rich sauce Bordelaise. A true carnivore’s delight.
Fourth Course: A decadent dark chocolate mousse tarte, served with a scoop of perfectly salted caramel gelato, and an array of chocolate elements presented in various delightful textures. A grand finale for any dessert lover.
