Embracing the Second Trimester: A Detailed Journey from Weeks 14-18
The second trimester is often heralded as the “golden period” of pregnancy, a time when many expecting mothers experience a surge in energy and a decrease in some of the more challenging early symptoms. For me, this phase has been a blend of profound relief, renewed energy, and the delightful anticipation of meeting Baby G. Let’s explore the milestones, symptoms, and heartwarming moments from weeks 14 through 18.
Week 14: Welcoming the Second Trimester & New Beginnings

Baby’s Size: Approximately the size of a lemon.
Key Symptoms & Experiences: This week marked a significant “it just got real” moment. My breasts continued to grow (again!), and consistent sleep became more elusive with increased tossing and turning. However, the overall feeling was one of immense relief and excitement.
Reaching Week 14 and officially entering the second trimester felt incredibly surreal and like a major milestone. Both Mr. B and I breathed a collective sigh of relief, as this transition represented a significant mental and emotional hurdle for us. Knowing the baby was healthy brought immense peace of mind, and coincidentally, my energy levels began to noticeably improve. Simultaneously, we finalized the plans for our upstairs home renovation, adding another layer of future-focused excitement to our lives. Amidst the natural chaos that comes with expecting a child and undertaking a home project, we began to feel a deeper sense of stability and preparedness for parenthood.
This week also ignited a strong nesting and planning instinct within me. I immediately delved into preparing maternity leave content for the fall, which was an interesting challenge – trying to brainstorm cozy autumn recipes in the peak of spring! Yet, having a concrete plan in place brings me great comfort, as my ultimate goal is to fully immerse myself in motherhood when Baby G arrives, dedicating myself to being the best parent I can be. This proactive planning helps alleviate future stress, allowing me to truly focus on the present joy of pregnancy.
Week 15: Maintaining Momentum & Cherished Connections

Baby’s Size: Comparable to an apple.
Key Symptoms & Experiences: Thankfully, my intense cravings for sweets diminished, leading to a wonderful boost in energy. My clothes started to feel noticeably snug around the mid-section, a clear sign of my growing bump. The persistent need to frequently use the restroom also continued this week.
Week 15 unfolded as a relatively smooth week, free from any unusual aches or significant issues. I continued my Orange Theory workouts, feeling incredibly grateful that I could still push through the “all-outs.” The only minor inconvenience during these intense sessions was the phantom sensation of needing to pee during sprints, even when my bladder was empty – a quirky pregnancy symptom I’ve learned to navigate! My week included a quick, yet exhilarating, trip back to Kansas City to celebrate my brother’s 40th birthday. It was a whirlwind, but so incredibly rewarding. I reconnected with my wonderful G-phi sorority sisters, caught up with dear high school friends, and spent precious time with my grandmother.
The entire weekend was a beautiful immersion in positive female energy, surrounded by women who offered boundless support, invaluable advice, practical tips, and unconditional love. It warmed my heart to know that Baby G will be welcomed into a world surrounded by such a fantastic network of “aunties.”
Reflecting on the travel aspect, I was once again reminded of the critical importance of staying hydrated and acknowledging the profound exhaustion that can accompany even short trips during pregnancy. My two-day journey felt akin to a week-long tour of Europe! With upcoming work travel on the horizon, I’m committed to being extra mindful of my body’s signals, ensuring I prioritize rest and self-care whenever needed. Oh, and my “pregnant brain” almost forgot to mention a huge highlight of this week: we officially announced our pregnancy to the world! If you happened to miss that exciting news, you can catch up on our full first trimester recap HERE for all the details.
Week 16: Energy Surge & Nursery Dreams Begin

Baby’s Size: Similar to an avocado.
Key Symptoms & Experiences: Hello, abdominal stretching! I experienced soreness around my mid-section as my body continued to expand. Sleep remained a challenge, with restless nights spent trying to find a comfortable side-sleeping position. My mission for the week: acquire a quality pregnancy pillow!
Apart from the persistent sleep issues, Week 16 brought an amazing surge of energy. I felt a renewed sense of purpose and an intense desire to tackle projects – I wanted to “kick some serious ass” and get our home remodel finished, especially the nursery. However, the nursery would have to wait a little longer, as we were just embarking on the initial demolition phases of our master bedroom and bathroom upstairs. And as if that wasn’t enough, we were also coordinating the installation of a new air conditioning system! There’s nothing quite like undertaking a full-scale home remodel when you’re almost five months pregnant – it certainly adds an interesting layer of challenge and excitement to the journey.
To keep my mind happily distracted from the renovation dust, I allowed myself the joy of starting to purchase a few small items for the nursery. As we’re pretty sure we won’t be finding out the baby’s sex, I’ve been diligently gathering inspiration for a truly gender-neutral space. Currently, I’m leaning towards an Art Deco style, drawing inspiration from some beautiful vintage Mother Goose nursery rhyme cards from 1925 that I discovered. These charming pieces are guiding my aesthetic choices for a timeless and whimsical feel.

Beyond nursery decor, a major task on my list is to start a baby registry! If you have any essential recommendations or “must-haves” to add to this sucker, please let me know! I’m planning to use Amazon for its convenience and extensive selection, hoping to make the process as straightforward as possible.

This week also included our sixteen-week prenatal appointment. My OB-GYN gave me a glowing report, noting that my uterus was measuring a little larger than average, beautifully accommodating both the growing baby and a fibroid. The highlight, as always, was hearing the baby’s strong heartbeat – a sound that instantly fills me with joy and reassurance. My doctor also mentioned hearing movement, suggesting that I might start feeling those exciting first kicks very soon!
Week 17: Finding Balance & Preparing for Baby G

Baby’s Size: The size of a pomegranate.
Key Symptoms & Experiences: I felt incredibly blessed to maintain good energy levels. My workouts continued, though crunches became a “sporty event” – definitely couldn’t do a full sit-up without feeling like I was squeezing the baby! My cravings had flattened out, and I was happily eating as I normally would.
Entering Week 17, I noticed a significant shift towards feeling more balanced, both physically and mentally. I’m actively working through what needs to be done to prepare for Baby G’s arrival. I’ve started compiling lists for my hospital bag essentials, a comprehensive baby medical and nursing kit, and crucial postpartum recovery items. As a highly visual person, having these tasks clearly outlined and visible helps me feel much more organized and relaxed about the journey ahead. This week also brought exciting news: we’ve finalized the dates for our baby showers! I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing and supportive network of family and friends. The outpouring of love for Baby G truly warms my heart and makes this experience even more special.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention a new arrival this week: the Snoogle! This large, cushy pregnancy pillow is designed to provide optimal comfort and support during sleep. I gave it a try, and it certainly helps in keeping my hips level, which contributed to a better night’s rest. My only minor drawback is its sheer size; Mr. B now has to contend for bed real estate with this “trucker” of a pillow! I anticipate it will play an even more vital role in my comfort as my pregnancy progresses and my bump grows larger.
Week 18: Maternity Jeans & Overcoming Obstacles

Baby’s Size: Comparable to an artichoke!
Key Symptoms & Experiences: I officially fit into my first pair of maternity jeans – a major comfort milestone! Sleep was generally okay, though nighttime bathroom trips became a regular part of my routine, which I’ve accepted as my new normal for now.
The beginning of Week 18 proved to be a bit challenging. Not only did we officially kick off the demolition phase of our upstairs renovation, but I also unfortunately came down with a particularly nasty chest cold. Dealing with persistent coughing, body aches, and an overall miserable feeling is certainly no fun when you’re pregnant. I felt immensely thankful for the flexibility of working from home, which allowed me to prioritize rest and copious amounts of soothing tea – the only things that provided any real comfort. Taking it easy was non-negotiable, and my home office setup was a true blessing during this rough patch.
Despite feeling under the weather, we had our eighteen-week prenatal appointment, which included a detailed sonogram session. This particular scan felt incredibly thorough, taking quite some time as the sonographer meticulously examined every tiny finger, toe, kidney, heart chamber, brain structure, eye, and the full length of the spine. Phew! The good news is that Baby G is developing perfectly on schedule, and the fibroid has remained stable, which was a huge relief to hear. Other than recovering from that stubborn cold, navigating the ongoing upstairs renovation, preparing for upcoming travel, and finding new ways to comfortably fit into maternity clothes, this pregnancy journey continues to be an incredibly positive and exciting experience!
Maternity & Nursery Favorites: Essential Picks for Expecting Parents
As my pregnancy progresses, I’m constantly discovering new products that make this journey more comfortable, convenient, and joyful. Here are some of my top maternity and nursery favorites that I’m absolutely loving right now:
Comfort Essentials for Expecting Moms
- The Snoogle Pregnancy Pillow: This unique, C-shaped pillow is an absolute game-changer for achieving consistent sleep during pregnancy. It’s incredibly easy to snuggle with and provides excellent support, helping to keep my hips level and aligned while sleeping on my side. Though it takes up a bit of real estate in the bed, the comfort it provides is well worth the minor battle for space with Mr. B! As my bump grows, I anticipate it becoming even more indispensable.
- Old Navy Front Low Panel Rockstar Jeggings: Simply amazing! These jeggings fit like a dream, providing incredible comfort and style. While Old Navy can sometimes be hit or miss with material quality, these Rockstar Jeggings are a definite win. The front low panel design is comfortable and supportive, and the price point is unbeatable for such a versatile maternity staple. They’re perfect for everyday wear, offering flexibility and a flattering silhouette.
- Old Navy Maternity Body Con Dress: I fully expect to live in this dress for the remainder of the summer! It’s incredibly comfortable, stylish, and adaptable. Paired with a cute jean jacket and some flats, it creates an effortlessly chic look. The body-con style beautifully accommodates my growing bump, making me feel both fashionable and at ease. It’s the perfect versatile piece for any expecting mother’s wardrobe.
Innovative Nursery & Baby Gear
- Olli Ella Nyla Changing Basket: Given that our home has two floors, my plan is to have two convenient changing stations – one on each level. For the nursery, I envisioned something distinctive and aesthetically pleasing. This beautiful changing basket is the perfect choice, lending a serene, zen-like, and natural feeling to the nursery space. Its unique design and organic appeal will create a calming environment for diaper changes and make a lovely addition to the decor.
- Willow Wearable Breast Pump: The quest for an efficient and user-friendly breast pump is a top priority! I’ve been eyeing the Willow pump because of its revolutionary wearable design. The idea that it simply slides into your bra, allowing for hands-free pumping, is pure genius! I can easily imagine myself pumping discreetly while I’m photographing food or engaging in other activities. This innovative design offers unparalleled freedom and convenience for busy moms.
- Doona Infant Car Seat & Stroller: Many experienced mamas have wisely advised me that having more than one stroller is incredibly practical. While our UppaBaby will serve as our primary stroller, I was instantly sold on the Doona Infant Car Seat after numerous recommendations. We already have our first press trip scheduled with Baby G in February, so I knew I needed a travel-friendly solution. The Doona is exactly that – it seamlessly transforms from an infant car seat into a compact stroller and back again in mere seconds, making airport navigation and travel incredibly easy. This “bad boy” has definitely made it onto our baby registry!
- Bella Tunno Silicone Taco Tuesday Bib: This adorable bib simply makes me so incredibly excited about the prospect of feeding Baby G tacos in the future! It’s a fun, quirky item that perfectly captures our family’s love for good food and adds a touch of personality to mealtime essentials.
Thank you for joining me on this recap of my first month in the second trimester. It’s a period filled with growth, planning, and a deep sense of anticipation. I’m looking forward to sharing more of this incredible journey with you as Baby G continues to grow. Stay tuned for next month’s update!
