Embracing Holiday Traditions: Gingerbread Fritters vs. Gingerbread Houses

As the holiday season draws near, a question often surfaces in my mind, perhaps in yours too: Is creating a gingerbread house an absolute must for celebrating the festive spirit? For many of us, myself included, the thought of gingerbread houses conjures cherished childhood memories. I recall with immense fondness the joy of building those sugary structures. My mother, with the patience of a saint, always dedicated time during the holidays to ensure we had the full gingerbread house experience. This was back in the 80s, long before convenient kits existed, meaning every step, from baking the gingerbread to assembling the walls with copious amounts of icing, was a hands-on adventure. Despite the playful chaos—and the occasional threat of a gingerbread-making food fight with my brothers—those moments were truly magical.

While my brothers were often a source of playful annoyance, the ritual of making gingerbread houses was something I deeply treasured. Or perhaps, was it the sheer delight of devouring spiced cookies smothered in sweet icing? Regardless, my stroll down memory lane leads me to ponder a delightful, modern twist on our beloved gingerbread tradition. These Chocolate Mocha Glazed Gingerbread Fritters awaken the giddy, joyful spirit of my six-year-old self, perfectly blended with my current appreciation for delicious, easy-to-make treats.

Tips for Perfect Gingerbread Fritters Every Time

Achieving the perfect fritter is simpler than you might think. The key is in the oil temperature. A good rule of thumb is to ensure your oil is preheated to medium heat – if you drop a tiny bit of batter in and it sizzles immediately, it’s ready! Don’t overcrowd your pan; frying in batches ensures even cooking and prevents the oil temperature from dropping too drastically. Flip them gently to ensure they cook beautifully on all sides, achieving that coveted golden-brown crispness. Once fried, a quick drain on paper towels removes excess oil, leaving you with light, irresistible treats ready for that luscious chocolate mocha glaze.

The glaze itself is a masterpiece of simplicity. Combining confectioners’ sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and cooled brewed coffee creates a rich, smooth, and aromatic topping that perfectly complements the spiced gingerbread. The coffee note in the mocha glaze enhances the spices in the fritters, adding a layer of sophisticated flavor that elevates the entire dish. If the glaze is too thick, simply add a tiny splash more milk until it reaches your desired drizzling consistency. The possibilities for customization are also endless – consider adding a pinch of orange zest to the fritter batter or a sprinkle of flaky sea salt over the glaze for an extra gourmet touch.

Whether you’re hosting a grand holiday feast or simply seeking a comforting treat for a quiet evening, these Chocolate Mocha Glazed Gingerbread Fritters are guaranteed to bring smiles and satisfy sweet cravings. They bridge the gap between nostalgic holiday traditions and the desire for modern, easy-to-prepare desserts, making them an essential addition to your festive repertoire. So, go ahead, embrace the joy of fried dough, the warmth of gingerbread, and the decadent touch of chocolate mocha. Your taste buds will thank you!

Chocolate Mocha Glazed Gingerbread Fritters

Yield: Makes 9 to 10 fritters

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

for the gingerbread fritters:
Oil for frying
2 cups Bob’s Red Mill Unbleached All-Purpose White Flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar + 3 tablespoons
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 large eggs
3/4 cups whole milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
for the chocolate mocha glaze:
1 cup confectioners sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons brewed coffee, cooled
Whole milk, if needed

Directions:

for the gingerbread fritters:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, and kosher salt until well combined. In a separate large bowl, whisk the eggs thoroughly. Then, slowly pour in the whole milk, followed by the melted unsalted butter and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients in three additions, gently mixing until just incorporated. Be careful not to overmix the batter. In a large Dutch oven or deep skillet, add about two inches of oil and preheat it over medium heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a tiny bit of batter into it; if it sizzles immediately, it’s hot enough. Once the oil is ready, carefully drop five to six tablespoons of the batter into the hot oil. Fry for about two minutes, flipping them occasionally to ensure even cooking and a golden-brown finish. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Drizzle generously with the prepared chocolate mocha glaze and repeat the process with the remaining batter.
for the chocolate mocha glaze:
In a medium bowl, combine the confectioners sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and cooled brewed coffee. Whisk until the glaze is smooth and free of lumps. If the glaze appears too thick for drizzling, add a small splash of whole milk, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
