An Unforgettable Autumn Weekend: High-Altitude Hiking and First Ski Runs in Colorado

Greetings, fellow adventurers and nature enthusiasts! As the crisp autumn air settles in and the vibrant hues of fall begin to fade, there’s a unique excitement that fills the atmosphere, especially with Halloween just around the corner. Can you believe it’s almost here? The anticipation for spooky festivities is almost palpable, though I confess, Mr. B and I are still in a spirited debate over our costumes. It’s a yearly challenge, isn’t it? Whether you’re planning a ghoulish gala or a quiet night of trick-or-treating, I hope your weekend was filled with joy and perhaps a touch of thrilling adventure, much like ours.

This past Sunday, Mr. B and I embarked on what turned out to be an incredibly memorable journey, blending the serene beauty of a high-altitude hike with the exhilarating rush of the season’s first ski runs. Our day began bright and early, with a clear blue sky beckoning us towards the majestic Loveland Pass. Known for its challenging terrain and unparalleled panoramic views, it promised an escape from the everyday and a deep dive into Colorado’s stunning natural landscape. Little did we know, Mother Nature had a dramatic welcome planned for us.

Battling the Elements: Our Ascent Up Loveland Pass

As we pulled up to the trailhead at Loveland Pass, the air was not just crisp; it was fiercely alive. The wind, a formidable force, immediately greeted us with an intensity that threatened to whisk us right off our feet. I turned to Mr. B, a look of skepticism undoubtedly plastered across my face, and issued my unspoken ultimatum: “I’ll give it five minutes,” my eyes conveyed, “and if this incessant wind doesn’t relent, we’re retreating to the warm sanctuary of the car.” He seemed to acknowledge my silent decree, perhaps with a slight nod, or maybe it was just the wind whipping his head. Either way, we pressed on.

To my astonishment and slight vexation, five minutes turned into ten, then twenty, and before I knew it, a full thirty minutes had passed, and we were still trudging uphill, directly into the face of that relentless wind. Every step was a battle, every gust a test of endurance and resolve. My patience, I must admit, was wearing thin. Just as I felt a full-blown temper tantrum brewing, ready to unleash a torrent of complaints, as if by some divine intervention, the wind began to subside. It softened, then dwindled, eventually transforming into a gentle breeze that merely rustled the dry alpine grasses. “Lucky,” I thought, channeling my inner Napoleon Dynamite, a wry smile playing on my lips. Mr. B had narrowly escaped a less-than-pleasant hiking companion.

Once the initial blustery challenge had passed, the rest of our ascent was nothing short of magnificent. The path, though dotted with a few troublesome rocky sections that required careful footing, mostly offered smooth sailing through the stunning high-alpine landscape. The air, now calm and crisp, smelled of pine and damp earth, a refreshing contrast to the earlier gusts. Each step brought us higher, revealing more of the vast, untamed beauty of the Colorado Rockies. The sunlight, no longer battling the wind, cascaded over the slopes, highlighting the subtle textures of the earth and the distant peaks.

Reaching the Apex: Breathtaking Panoramas and Profound Reflections

It took us approximately an hour to reach the summit, a commendable feat considering our near-literal brush with being blown off the mountain earlier! The effort, however, was immediately forgotten the moment we stood at the very top. The panorama that unfolded before our eyes was nothing short of breathtaking. It felt as if we had truly ascended to the “top of the world,” an experience that transcends mere sightseeing. From this vantage point, the world stretched out endlessly in every direction, a tapestry of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and a sky so expansive it seemed to touch eternity.

Up there, high above the tree line and the clamor of everyday life, a profound sense of tranquility enveloped us. The only sound was the gentle thumping of my own heart, a rhythmic reminder of life’s precious rhythm. In these moments of profound quietude, life’s grand perspective comes into sharp focus. The trivial worries and daily stresses dissipate, replaced by a deep appreciation for the present moment and the sheer majesty of nature. It’s a powerful reminder to cherish every breath, every vista, every connection, for life is fleeting and each moment is a gift that could, in an instant, be gone. This reflection added a layer of depth to our adventure, making the journey not just a physical one, but a spiritual one too.

The Descent: Easygoing and Entertaining

The journey back down from the summit proved to be far less strenuous than our windy ascent. With the path now familiar and the wind significantly calmer, we were able to fully relax and enjoy the scenery. Mr. B, ever the entertainer, kept the spirits high with his witty banter and amusing observations, making the descent feel almost effortless. It’s always a joy to share these moments with someone who can make even the simplest walk feel like a grand adventure. The sun was still high, casting long shadows across the peaks, and the air was perfectly crisp, promising a beautiful afternoon ahead.

From Peaks to Powder: Kicking Off Ski Season at A-Basin

Having successfully conquered Loveland Pass, our adventurous spirit was still buzzing, eager for the next chapter of our epic Sunday. There’s only one logical progression after a vigorous high-altitude hike in autumn in Colorado: the first official ski run of the season! And so, with renewed energy and boundless excitement, we set our sights on Arapahoe Basin, affectionately known as A-Basin. This marked the thrilling inauguration of our 2011-2012 ski season, a moment we eagerly anticipate every year. The thought of gliding down fresh snow, feeling the wind against our faces, and hearing the familiar crunch beneath our skis was pure bliss. Ahhhh… yeahhhhhhh! The mountain was calling, and we were ready to answer.

My heart belongs to A-Basin – the perfect spot to kick off the ski season.

Fueling Up: Burgers, Beers, and People Watching at the Sundeck

By the time we arrived at A-Basin, after our morning hike, both Mr. B and I were, predictably, absolutely starving. Our stomachs were rumbling in unison, demanding immediate sustenance. We swiftly made our way to the bustling sundeck, a vibrant hub of excited skiers and snowboarders, all basking in the glorious “blue-bird” day. Our order was simple yet perfectly satisfying: a couple of juicy, mouth-watering burgers, cooked to perfection, paired with refreshing 24-ounce Tecates. Because, as we always say, we keep things undeniably classy around here, even at a ski resort sundeck!

A cold Tecate – significantly more affordable than a trip to Malibu, and just as satisfying after a day on the mountain!

While savoring our well-deserved lunch, we engaged in one of our favorite pastimes: people-watching. The sundeck at A-Basin is a fantastic observatory for this, especially on opening weekend. The sheer variety of characters parading through was endlessly entertaining, a veritable feast for the eyes. From seasoned pros waxing lyrical about the early snow to excited beginners cautiously navigating their gear, the atmosphere was vibrant and full of unique personalities. We watched “like a mother trucker,” absorbing every detail and sharing knowing glances and chuckles at the colorful display of mountain culture.

Hitting the Slopes: First Laps of the Season

With our hunger satisfied and our spirits lifted by the lively atmosphere, it was time to gear up and head towards the lifts. The excitement was palpable as we clicked into our skis, feeling the familiar weight and anticipation. Considering it was early season and an opening weekend, the wait to get on the lift wasn’t too bad at all. We probably only queued for about five minutes, which, for anyone familiar with popular Colorado resorts, is practically a walk-on! This is nothing compared to the legendary lines at Vail on a powder day, where you can easily spend half an hour just waiting to load.

A-Basin only had three runs open, but that was more than enough for us to stretch our legs and get a feel for the snow. Each lap was a joyous reacquaintance with the sensation of carving turns, feeling the subtle shifts in terrain, and remembering the rhythm of the mountain. The snow was soft, and the limited runs were surprisingly enjoyable, allowing us to focus on technique and simply revel in the act of skiing again. We took three exhilarating laps, each one reigniting our passion for the sport. However, I must confess, after a morning hike and a few intense runs, my muscles were definitely feeling it. Skiing, even for just a few runs, is undeniably hard work, people!

A Perfect End to an Adventurous Weekend

Our Sunday adventure, seamlessly blending the challenge of a high-altitude hike with the joy of the first ski runs of the season, was truly the perfect culmination of an amazing weekend with my hubs, Mr. B. It was a day packed with breathtaking views, invigorating physical activity, delicious food, and plenty of laughs and shared moments that reinforce the bond we share. These kinds of experiences are more than just activities; they are memory-makers, grounding us in the present and reminding us of the simple pleasures life offers.

This weekend served as a wonderful reminder that we absolutely need to prioritize “date days,” “date nights,” or even full “date weekends” more often. Taking time away from the routine to explore, adventure, and simply be together in new and exciting ways is invaluable for refreshing the spirit and strengthening connections. Whether it’s conquering a mountain peak or gliding down snowy slopes, these shared experiences are the fabric of a rich and fulfilling life. What are your favorite ways to spend quality time and inject adventure into your routine?

Goodnight, friends, and may your week be filled with its own exciting adventures!
