Hello there! I know what you’re thinking – it’s December, and here I am, finally getting around to a recap of Charlie’s very first birthday, which happened months ago. But as the saying goes, better late than never, right? The past few months have been a whirlwind of joy, challenges, and endless discovery, making it a busy yet incredibly rewarding period for our family. Keeping up with a curious one-year-old, meticulously planning a memorable first birthday party, and soaking in all the quintessential autumn activities certainly demanded every ounce of our energy. Parenthood, especially with a toddler, is truly a dynamic adventure that tests your limits and fills your heart in ways you never imagined.

The transition from a newborn to a vibrant, exploring toddler felt like it happened in the blink of an eye. Once we returned from our serene Labor Day getaway in the mountains, it felt like an all-out sprint through September. It was during this month, particularly after her birthday, that Charlie seemed to transform right before our eyes, blossoming into an even more active and independent little person. Her development accelerated at an astonishing pace, and every day brought a new skill or discovery. So, let’s dive into a comprehensive look at the remarkable changes we observed in Charlie and the wonderful experiences we shared over the past few months, culminating in her unforgettable first birthday celebration.

Navigating New Waters: Charlie’s Developmental Milestones and Adjustments

Turning one is a significant milestone, not just for the baby, but for the entire family. It marks the shift from infancy to toddlerhood, bringing with it a host of developmental changes and new adventures. For us, one of the most immediate and impactful transitions was weaning Charlie off formula. We knew this would be a process, especially since she had developed a strong attachment to her morning and evening bottles.

The Formula-to-Milk Transition Journey

The journey from formula to whole milk was definitely a learning curve for all of us. Charlie was surprisingly amenable to giving up her mid-morning, pre-afternoon nap, and post-afternoon nap bottles, which was a huge relief. However, those cherished morning and evening bottles held a special place in her routine. To ease this significant mental and physical adjustment, we adopted a gradual approach. We started by mixing her formula with whole milk, slowly increasing the milk ratio over time, and offering this only during her morning and evening feeds. This gentle transition allowed her system to adapt without too much shock and helped her slowly detach from the psychological comfort of pure formula.

I wish I could say it was a perfectly smooth sailing experience, but honestly, it was far from it. It took about a month of consistent effort and patience for Charlie to fully grasp that her primary source of nourishment was now coming from solid foods, not solely from her bottle. We persevered by continually offering a variety of nutritious foods and appropriate snacks throughout the day. Consistency was key, and eventually, her little system sorted itself out. We are now completely off formula, a huge victory! The next phase, bidding farewell to all bottles, is on the horizon. Wish us luck as we embark on that next step!

Tackling Toddler Tummy Troubles

Ah, poop! A universally hot topic in households with babies and toddlers. With the dietary shift from formula to whole milk and the introduction of a wider array of solid foods, Charlie’s digestive system was, understandably, a bit confused. We encountered the dreaded “clay poop,” a sign of discomfort and constipation. I tried all the usual remedies – prune juice, increasing water intake, and various dietary adjustments. Nothing seemed to fully resolve it until a wonderful food blogging friend shared a game-changing tip: Miralax. Following her advice and consulting our pediatrician, I began adding a half teaspoon to her water bottle daily. Praise be, it worked wonders! Keeping her regular has been a blessing, and those uncomfortable clay poops are now a thing of the past.

The Stroller Standoff: Embracing Mobility

In the weeks leading up to her first birthday, Charlie developed a strong aversion to her stroller. It was as if she decided she had no time for passive transportation; she wanted to crawl, explore, and move as much as possible! While her newfound desire for independence was adorable, it made getting out of the house a bit of a challenge. To solve this, at least partially, I reverted to carrying her in the Ergo Baby carrier. This allowed us to continue our outings while still accommodating her need for closeness and mobility. It’s amazing how quickly their preferences change, and how parents must constantly adapt!

Navigating Nap Schedules and Daycare Dynamics

I am incredibly thankful that Charlie is still taking her morning nap. Many moms I know say their babies drop the morning nap around this age, so we’re cherishing it while it lasts! Currently, Charlie enjoys two restorative naps each day: a morning nap from 10 AM to 11 AM, and an afternoon nap from 2 PM to 4 PM. This schedule provides much-needed breaks for both of us and ensures she’s well-rested. The looming question of daycare once she transitions to just one nap a day is a constant thought. I’m already envisioning the chaos and how much harder it will be to accomplish anything once her only nap is gone!

Curiosity: A Double-Edged Sword

Charlie’s burgeoning curiosity is both endearing and utterly exhausting. Our kitchen trash can now lives on the kitchen island, a temporary but necessary measure, because she loves to get into everything! While it’s slightly annoying to have it out of place, I remind myself that this intense curiosity is a hallmark of her rapid development and desire to understand her world. She’s also still fascinated by toilet paper, and has now discovered the joys of splashing in toilet water – a new challenge for our child-proofing efforts! One of my absolute highlights from September was seeing her rock a ponytail for the first time. It was such a small thing, but it made her look so much older and even more adorable. And I’m already dying to paint her tiny nails and toes, imagining all the fun “girly” moments to come.

12-Month Vaccinations: A Parental Warning

Charlie handled her 12-month immunizations remarkably well, sailing through all the developmental checklists. However, a crucial piece of advice for all parents: be prepared for the potential delayed pain from the MMR shot. Our pediatrician warned us that some babies might experience discomfort about four days post-vaccination, and it was spot on. Charlie became a terror, visibly miserable and fussy. The good news is that this phase is temporary and does pass. Going into these vaccinations with this knowledge can help you prepare and provide extra comfort during those challenging few days.

Planning Charlie’s first birthday party was a labor of love, a joyful undertaking to celebrate her incredible first year. We wanted to create a magical atmosphere that was both elegant and fun, focusing on delicate details and cherished memories.

For her actual first birthday photos, we opted for a charming and playful setup. We sourced beautiful balloons from Party City (hooray for curbside pickup!), tied them to a quaint chair, and let Charlie indulge in some adorable mini cupcakes. Our talented photographer, Jenna, captured these candid moments perfectly. The mini cupcakes were an excellent choice – so much easier for tiny hands to manage and less messy than a traditional smash cake, while still providing that quintessential first birthday cake experience!

The party’s aesthetic was carefully curated around soft pinks, rich burgundy, and elegant gold tones. This color palette created a sophisticated yet whimsical feel. Late September can be tricky for party themes, as it’s technically “fall” but still often boasts warm, even hot, weather. We embraced the autumnal feel with colors while keeping the decor light and airy. A majority of our unique items were discovered on Etsy, and I made sure to order everything well in advance to account for any potential shipping delays. This proactive approach definitely paid off, ensuring everything arrived on time and stress-free.

Charlie’s birthday party was truly a joyous occasion. My biggest piece of advice for parents planning a toddler’s birthday is to go in with low expectations for perfection. Toddlers, especially at one year old, can easily become overstimulated. I deliberately didn’t stress about getting a perfect party photo of Charlie, as we already had so many gorgeous professional shots from Jenna. This mindset took immense pressure off, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy the celebration, which I believe genuinely contributed to Charlie having a wonderful time too!

Despite the unusual circumstances of 2020, we made a concerted effort to keep busy and show Charlie that life, and joy, continue on. We immersed ourselves in a variety of delightful fall activities, creating precious family memories.

Leaf Peeping in Steamboat Springs

Our autumn adventures began with a trip to Steamboat Springs for some spectacular leaf peeping. This destination holds a special place in Bret’s and my hearts; it’s our absolute happy place. Being able to share this beautiful experience with Charlie, surrounded by family, made it even more special. The vibrant fall foliage this year was truly breathtaking, painting the landscape in magnificent hues of red, orange, and gold. It was a perfect start to our autumn explorations, filled with scenic beauty and cherished moments.

Pumpkin Patch Adventures

Next on our list was a classic pumpkin patch visit. We met up with friends on what turned out to be one of the most blustery days ever, but we didn’t let the wind dampen our spirits! We still managed to have a fantastic time, enjoying a tractor ride, navigating through the fields, and, of course, snagging that quintessential family photo for the gram. Charlie loved the new sights and sounds, even if the wind was a bit much at times.

Our everyday fall activities included countless walks around the neighborhood. Charlie was absolutely fascinated by all the vibrant colors of the fallen leaves, and yes, she delighted in tasting a few leaves and pinecones along the way – a true sensory exploration! The aquarium proved to be an incredibly easy and engaging outing for Charlie and our family. The vibrant marine life provided endless visual stimulation, captivating her attention. We celebrated Halloween with true family spirit! We managed to get our family photo taken prior to the actual day, which, again, alleviated pressure and allowed us to simply enjoy the holiday. Our theme was “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” and we even managed to get Charlie to wear her tiny Napoleon hat for a solid 1.2 seconds – a triumphant feat! I’m already brimming with curiosity about what imaginative costume she’ll choose next year.
