Have you ever encountered a place that instantly resonates with your soul? A place where every detail, every corner, every object, and even the subtle scents combine to create a feeling of pure joy and inspiration, both inside and out? For me, this “sparkly mecca” was discovered during a memorable trip to Cleveland, Ohio, where I had the pleasure of exploring the vibrant food scene.

Among the many culinary gems, one establishment, in particular, captured my heart and taste buds: Melt Bar & Grill. The owner, Matt Fish, is nothing short of a culinary genius. His menu, dedicated entirely to gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, is a testament to creative flavor combinations and comforting indulgence. Each sandwich is a meticulously thought-out masterpiece, designed to awaken your inner food enthusiast and make you want to celebrate deliciousness until the cows come home. From innovative ingredient pairings to classic comfort re-imagined, Melt Bar & Grill truly sets a high standard for what a grilled cheese can be.

The Inspiration: A Beloved Classic Reimagined

During my visit, the menu at Melt Bar & Grill presented an array of enticing options, each more intriguing than the last. There was the Fried Green Tomato BLT, a hearty Beef Bologna Slab, and a comforting Mom’s Meatloaf sandwich – truly, a symphony of flavors that piqued my curiosity and had me eager to try them all. But for me, the true “piece de resistance,” the dish that left an indelible mark, was their rendition of the Monte Cristo sandwich.

Chances are, you’re familiar with this delightful culinary creation. The Monte Cristo is a famous sandwich typically made with slices of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, often dipped in an egg batter, pan-fried or deep-fried until golden, and then dusted with a generous amount of confectioners’ sugar. This unique combination of savory meats and cheese with a touch of sweetness is what makes it so distinctive and utterly crave-worthy. It’s often compared to its French cousin, the Croque Monsieur, and its variant, the Croque Madame, but the Monte Cristo stands apart with its signature sweet finish, transforming a simple sandwich into an elevated experience.

From Sandwich to Savory Lasagna: A Holiday Revelation

Now, you might be wondering, “How does a decadent grilled cheese sandwich lead to a discussion about lasagna?” Bear with me for a moment. While I absolutely adore a classic grilled cheese, the holiday season brings with it a whirlwind of potlucks, family gatherings, and festive feasts. During these busy times, having a dish that is both impressive and easily shareable is invaluable. That’s why I decided to take the beloved flavors of the Monte Cristo sandwich and transform them into a more substantial, portable, and party-friendly format: a hearty lasagna.

This Monte Cristo Lasagna offers all the familiar, comforting tastes of the sandwich in a layered casserole form, making it perfect for feeding a crowd or for a special family meal. It maintains the classic combination of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, but instead of bread, it uses tender lasagna noodles. The rich, creamy white sauce replaces the traditional egg batter, binding all the elements together into a cohesive, delicious dish. The ultimate touch is a golden, flaky puff pastry crust, which not only adds a beautiful presentation but also provides a delightful textural contrast, mimicking the crispy exterior of the fried sandwich while adding an elegant flourish. This innovative fusion truly elevates the concept of comfort food, making it an absolute must-have for any holiday recipe exchange or celebratory gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 package no-boil lasagna noodles
  • 2 cups cooked ham, diced
  • 1½ cups cooked turkey, diced
  • 3 cups Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 sheet thawed puff pastry
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt six tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is cooked out and forms a light roux. Gradually pour in the whole milk and add the nutmeg. Continue whisking until the sauce has thickened, which should take approximately five minutes. Season the white sauce with a little salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Lightly spray a standard 13×9 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Spread about 1/3 cup of the prepared white sauce evenly over the bottom of the baking dish. Arrange three lasagna noodles over the sauce. Then, spread 1 cup of the white sauce over the noodles, followed by 1/2 cup of diced ham, 1/2 cup of diced turkey, and 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese. Repeat this layering process two more times, creating a total of three complete layers.
  4. For the final layer of noodles, pour any remaining white sauce over the top and sprinkle with the remaining Swiss cheese. Carefully place the thawed sheet of puff pastry over the lasagna, ensuring it covers the entire dish. In a small bowl, whisk one egg to create an egg wash, and then lightly brush the top of the puff pastry with the egg wash for a golden finish. Make two or three small cuts in the puff pastry to allow steam to escape and prevent it from rising too much during baking.
  5. Bake the lasagna for approximately 40 to 45 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and flaky, and the lasagna is bubbly. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving. For that authentic Monte Cristo touch, dust generously with confectioners’ sugar just before serving!
