A Decade of Dreams: Celebrating 10 Years of Culinary Adventures and Business Growth
Ten years. A full decade. It’s a remarkable milestone that feels both like a lifetime and a fleeting moment. When I first launched Climbing Grier Mountain (CGM) in August of 2010, my vision was quite different from what it is today. Living amidst the majestic landscapes of Colorado, my initial goal was to chronicle my life experiences: the exhilaration of snow skiing, the serenity of hiking trails, the vibrant energy of Denver village gatherings, and the structured world of my financial industry career. I felt a strong desire to share these moments, these slices of my life, with friends and family back home.
From Corporate Cubicle to Culinary Canvas: An Unexpected Pivot
Life, as it often does, had other plans. The financial industry job that once anchored my routine eventually dissolved, a casualty of the market crash. This unexpected turn, though initially unsettling, proved to be the pivotal catalyst I needed. Suddenly, the structured path I had envisioned for CGM shifted dramatically. I was a newlywed at the time, navigating the early days of marriage, and I harbored a deep secret: I had absolutely zero experience in the kitchen. In fact, to put it mildly, I detested cooking. It’s precisely why culinary pursuits were conspicuously absent from my initial list of blog aspirations – because, quite simply, I didn’t know how to cook!
Yet, in the downtime between job interviews and the search for a new direction, an unexpected journey began. I found myself drawn to the vibrant world of the Food Network, transforming my living room into an impromptu culinary classroom. I embarked on a self-taught mission to conquer the kitchen, a process that was far from smooth. I cannot adequately describe the countless meals I scorched, the numerous stove fires I bravely extinguished, or the myriad finger cuts I endured as I clumsily learned to wield a knife. These early, often chaotic, kitchen adventures were not failures; they were foundational lessons. Each mishap, each burnt offering, fueled my resolve and ultimately led to the creation of “Foodie Fridays” on CGM. This was my digital space to document these culinary explorations, a platform not just for perfected recipes, but for honest stories of learning – how to prevent a sauce from seizing, how to safely manage a kitchen flare-up, and, crucially, how to slice an onion without sacrificing a digit. This is where the true heart of my food blogging journey began to beat.
A Decade On: Author, Expert, Explorer, Entrepreneur
Fast forward ten transformative years, and the landscape of my life and business is almost unrecognizable from those initial days. What began as a simple online diary, a means to connect with loved ones, has organically blossomed into a thriving, full-time enterprise. Today, I proudly identify as a cookbook author, an accomplished food photography expert, and a global explorer who has journeyed to dozens of countries, immersing myself in diverse cultural cuisines. This isn’t just a job; it’s a passion, a calling that brings immense joy and fulfillment.
What truly sustains me, however, runs deeper than the tangible achievements. The profound truth, the most rewarding aspect of my daily life, is waking up each morning with a singular, empowering question: “How can I leverage this platform, Climbing Grier Mountain, to make a positive impact on the world?” While CGM undoubtedly serves as a vibrant vehicle for sharing delicious, accessible recipes, it has evolved into something far more expansive and meaningful. This unwavering commitment to purpose, this continuous quest to contribute and inspire, is the very reason I stand here today, celebrating ten incredible years.
Celebrating a Decade: 5 Timeless Pieces of Wisdom for Life and Business
In honor of this significant 10-year blogging anniversary, I wanted to offer something truly valuable back to you, my cherished readers and community. In an age saturated with information on how to “fix things” – from six-step financial remedies to prescriptive guides for improving one’s love life – we often overlook a fundamental truth. Sometimes, what we truly need isn’t a quick fix, but rather a moment of thoughtful reflection, a pause to absorb genuine advice and timeless words of wisdom that foster deep, personal development. It is in this profound self-cultivation that true and lasting success is forged.
Therefore, today, I am honored to share five pieces of advice and wisdom that have profoundly shaped my path, enabling me to remain authentic to myself and steadfast in the growth of my business throughout this remarkable decade.
1. Money Only Gives You Options
This invaluable lesson was imparted to me by my wise Grandfather Chuck, and it has served as a cornerstone of my entrepreneurial philosophy. When I first launched CGM, I harbored no illusions of instant riches, nor did I anticipate “rolling in Benjamins” within a few short weeks. Spoiler alert: financial returns were practically non-existent for the initial years. It wasn’t until almost my fourth year of blogging that I saw any monetary compensation – a rather modest sum of $56. For many, such a meager amount after years of dedication would undoubtedly trigger instant disappointment or even discourage them from continuing. However, my entrepreneurial spirit has never been singularly motivated by the pursuit of wealth. My focus was never consumed by the question of when the next $56 would materialize.
Instead, I consciously chose to redefine the value of that money. I viewed the $56 not as an insignificant amount, but as a fantastic option – an opportunity to invest in a much-desired photo editing course. This perspective directly challenged the conventional societal narrative that often assigns intrinsic value to money itself. By consciously detaching from that ingrained belief, I transformed my thinking from “I only made $56” to “Wow, I now have $56 to apply towards that online course I’ve been wanting to take!” Do you perceive the powerful shift? The moment you dismantle the perceived power of money as an end in itself, what remains are limitless options and possibilities. Money, in its purest form, is a tool for creating choices and opportunities, not an ultimate measure of worth or success.
2. Stay Hitched: The Power of Enduring Relationships
To “stay hitched” is a cowboy term for remaining committed, and in the context of business and life, it means cultivating and nurturing relationships with unwavering dedication. This particular piece of advice, while seemingly straightforward, is undeniably challenging in practice. Relationships, by their very nature, are dynamic; they constantly evolve, shift, and, at times, conclude. However, I made a conscious decision many years ago that for Climbing Grier Mountain to achieve genuine longevity and sustained impact, I absolutely needed to remain deeply committed – or “hitched” – to my readers, my clients, and my broader community. This commitment manifests as a continuous pledge to show up authentically, to consistently offer tangible value, and, perhaps most crucially, to genuinely listen to their needs and feedback. I understood that this level of dedication would demand consistent effort and often difficult work. Yet, I can promise you, with absolute certainty, that if you commit 100% of yourself to fostering these vital relationships, the returns – in loyalty, engagement, and mutual growth – will undoubtedly be 100% and beyond.
3. Struggles Are the Curriculum to Becoming Our Better Selves
Phew. That’s a profound statement, isn’t it? If I were to identify one of my core superpowers, it would unequivocally be the ability to embrace failure. While it may sound counterintuitive or even strange, I genuinely thrive on it. My philosophy is simple: if I’m not failing, I’m simply not trying hard enough. Over the years, I’ve observed countless individuals who comfortably settle within the boundaries of the status quo, avoiding any discomfort or risk. This complacency, I must confess, often ignites a certain fury within me. I am a staunch believer that people should actively and relentlessly push boundaries, challenge conventions, and seize every conceivable opportunity to take calculated risks.
For me, that is where the true richness of life’s journey lies. If you are not constantly digging deeper, questioning assumptions, and cultivating an insatiable curiosity, you might as well “close up shop,” both figuratively and literally, because relevance in any field will quickly elude you. Consider the iconic career of Madonna: it’s no coincidence that she has repeatedly reinvented her persona throughout the decades. Her enduring success is a direct result of her continuous willingness to change, to navigate struggles, and to fearlessly take risks in her relentless pursuit of becoming her “better self.” That is precisely how she has sustained such a remarkably long and impactful career. Remember this fundamental truth: failure, or any struggle you encounter, is merely a temporary state, a valuable lesson in your ongoing curriculum. Wouldn’t you rather embrace the challenge of taking a risk, even with the possibility of failure, than be left with the quiet regret of feeling utterly ordinary?
4. Be a Role Model, Not Just an Influencer
Over the past few years, the concept of being a role model has resonated with me more deeply and become a more pronounced focus in my life and business. Perhaps it’s the wisdom that comes with experience, but as I’ve experienced personal growth, navigated significant changes, and enjoyed periods of abundance, an undeniable urge to channel that energy into helping others has emerged. There’s an old adage that perfectly encapsulates this sentiment: “You are what you do, not what you’ll say you do.” The landscape of being an “influencer” in today’s digital world is increasingly complex and often fraught with pressure. Recently, I made a conscious mental shift: I decided to replace the term “influencer” with “role model” in my self-perception and business strategy. This simple reframing completely transforms the perspective and the landscape of my work.
By consciously claiming my identity as a role model within my business, I have successfully disengaged from the often overwhelming pressure of the “social mob” and, in turn, created space for my own diligent research and thoughtful consideration on a myriad of worldly matters. Don’t misunderstand me; I have certainly fallen victim to the pervasive feeling of needing to present everything as “picture perfect” before sharing aspects of my life. I’ve also found myself jumping onto social media campaigns even when an intuitive gut feeling told me something wasn’t quite right. However, this intentional reframing of myself as a role model has provided me with a solid, stable foundation. I now feel more grounded, more centered, and, crucially, more energized to actively pursue and champion truth, with the explicit aim of genuinely helping others in a meaningful and authentic way.
5. Nobody Gives a F$CK as Much as You Do About Your Business
How liberating is that realization? This, without a doubt, has been the single hardest lesson I have ever had to learn and internalize. As a Type 2 Enneagram personality, someone inherently wired to be a people-pleaser, this was a truth I initially resisted acknowledging with all my might. In the nascent years of my business, I diligently attempted to conform to every mainstream trend and popular aesthetic. Everyone, it seemed, was posting bright, airy, white-themed food photos, and my immediate, eager response was, “Yes! I’ll do that too!” Spoiler alert: every single one of my attempts at white, light, and bright photography was an unmitigated disaster. It was almost as if the universe itself was emphatically calling “bullshit” on my unauthentic efforts.
Then, one pivotal day, I decided to trust my own creative vision and pivot dramatically towards dark and moody food photography. BAZINGA! The response was instantaneous and overwhelmingly positive. People absolutely fell in love with my distinct photographic style. But here’s the crucial insight: Had I stopped to ask people what they thought about me venturing into a dark and moody aesthetic, the overwhelming sentiment would likely have been, “Nobody gives a F$CK,” because everyone else was still entrenched in the bright, white trend. I was the only one who cared enough, who trusted my intuition enough, to fundamentally change my direction and embrace my unique artistic voice. In the challenging and dynamic world of business, this is perhaps the most vital principle you can ever embody: trust yourself, trust your instincts, and forge your own path with unwavering conviction.
Looking Forward: The Best is Yet to Come
I sincerely hope these collected words of wisdom and shared experiences offer you a valuable perspective, spark a new idea, or ignite a fresh wave of motivation in your own journey. I truly couldn’t embark on this incredible adventure, nor could I continue to grow Climbing Grier Mountain, without your unwavering support, engagement, and genuine interest. I deeply appreciate you taking the time to read, reflect, and share in this significant milestone with me.
Ten years is indeed a substantial period, a testament to perseverance and passion. Yet, with every fiber of my being, I wholeheartedly believe that the best, most exciting, and most impactful chapters for Climbing Grier Mountain are still yet to be written. Thank you for being an integral part of this amazing journey.
