During my stay, my home away from home was The Lodge Above Town Creek, an exquisite boutique bed & breakfast nestled in downtown Fredericksburg. This charming establishment boasts 16 immaculately designed guest suites, each offering a blend of luxury and comfort. Our menu featured fresh local greens with creamy goat cheese, a unique bison schnitzel complemented by a rich ancho chili sauce, and a delightful, homemade strawberry galette. If you plan to dine at Otto’s main location, it’s conveniently situated directly across from the Pacific War Museum. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially as word on the street is that their duck schnitzel is a must-try!
- Cabernet Grill: Widely considered the hallmark of Hill Country cuisine, Cabernet Grill consistently delivers an extraordinary dining experience. It’s no surprise that Wine Thrillist recognized Cabernet Grill as one of the top 100 restaurants for wine in 2018. We savored a magnificent smorgasbord of courses, including a pecan-crusted crab cake, a quintessential “Texas twinkie” (bacon-wrapped jalapeño), succulent roasted quail, and a decadent German chocolate pudding – each dish a celebration of regional flavors.
- Altstadt Brewery: Embark on a grand Bavarian adventure at Altstadt Brewery, a magnificent castle-like establishment that opened its doors in 2018 and has since soared in popularity. Housed behind ancient limestone walls in an establishment dating back to 1846, the tasting room includes a cellar ideal for optimal wine and cheese storage. Make sure to sample their Tempranillo wines; Pontotoc was a pioneer in planting these grapes in Texas. And whatever you do, don’t pass up on their picnic spread, which features the most delicious pimento cheese I have ever tasted!

A notable addition to the Grape Creek family is Heath Sparkling Wines, which offers a modern, gorgeous facility designed to elevate your tasting experience to an entirely new level. It’s a testament to the innovation thriving in Texas Wine Country.
- Messina Hof: A true pioneer in Texas winemaking, Messina Hof is a family-owned business that masterfully blends Italian and German influences. With a rich history spanning over 40 years, Messina Hof made history as the first Texas wine to achieve an impressive score of 90 points from the prestigious Wine Spectator. Their extensive portfolio showcases a deep understanding of viticulture and a commitment to producing world-class wines.
Peach Orchards: A Taste of Sweet Hill Country Tradition
Fredericksburg is also famously known as the “Peach Capital of Texas,” and during harvest season (typically late May through August), the entire region comes alive with the sweet scent of fresh peaches. They offer many different varietals, but the Freestone peaches are particularly popular, making for a wonderfully sweet treat, especially when paired with ice cream.

Among my absolute favorites were the rich German Chocolate and the delightful Blackberry-Peach Pie – a true taste of home-baked goodness.
- Fischer & Wieser: With a heritage dating back to 1913, Fischer & Wieser is a family-owned business deeply rooted in Fredericksburg’s history. The original store still stands proudly and now houses an impressive collection of over 175 gourmet products, including a popular cooking school. You might even recognize their most famous product, the Chipotle Raspberry Sauce, from your local grocery shelves. It’s a testament to their enduring legacy of quality and innovation.
- Shopping Downtown Fredericksburg: Downtown Fredericksburg offers a truly exceptional shopping experience, so much so that Jetsetter.com named it one of “America’s Most Beautiful Main Streets” in September 2017. The vibrant downtown area boasts over 150 specialty shops, inviting you to explore everything from antique treasures and bespoke clothing to a vast selection of authentic cowboy boots.
