Four Months with Charlie

Fourth Month Baby Update: Milestones, Sleep Training, and Travel Adventures

The journey of parenthood is a whirlwind, and the fourth month with our little Charlie has been nothing short of extraordinary. It was a period marked by significant growth spurts, pivotal sleep training milestones, her first thrilling airplane adventure, and my own return to the professional world. Looking back, “whoa” perfectly encapsulates the sheer volume of changes and incredible moments packed into these thirty days.

This month truly felt like a turning point, signaling the end of the newborn fog and the beginning of a more structured, yet equally exciting, chapter. We navigated new routines, embraced new challenges, and celebrated every tiny victory. The energy and learning curve were immense, making it one big, thrilling month.

Charlie’s Remarkable Transformations: Sleep, Growth, and Independence

Returning home after the holiday season brought with it a renewed sense of purpose and the perfect opportunity to implement some much-needed changes for Charlie. The new year felt like a fresh start, and our top priority became establishing a consistent and effective bedtime routine for our growing girl.

Mastering the Bedtime Routine: Insights from Taking Cara Babies

For those who follow my journey, you’ll know my unwavering trust in Taking Cara Babies’ sleep advice. Her flexible schedules have been an absolute game-changer, not just for Charlie, but for our sanity as parents. As Charlie approached her fourth month, I revisited Cara’s guidelines for months three and four. The core message was clear: the late-night newborn days needed to end. Cara emphasized that a bedtime of 7 PM or even earlier was now crucial for healthy sleep development. Bret and I exchanged incredulous glances – 7 PM?! It felt incredibly early, but we were committed to trying it.

A New Chapter: Moving Charlie to Her Own Room

Alongside the earlier bedtime, we made another significant decision: it was time for Charlie to “move out” of our bedroom. While we cherished her presence, the reality is that babies, even when sleeping, can be surprisingly loud. Furthermore, Cara Babies insightfully noted that around three months, babies begin to sense their parents’ presence, which can inadvertently lead to more frequent awakenings if they know you’re nearby. This idea, though initially surprising, resonated with us. We wanted to foster Charlie’s independence and ensure everyone got the best possible rest.

One ordinary Tuesday night, we embarked on this new adventure. After her final bottle at seven, we gently placed her into her SNOO bassinet, gave her a goodnight kiss, and left her in her own room. The initial feeling was a mix of sadness and apprehension, almost like we were evicting a beloved roommate. However, that very night, a subtle shift occurred. While she didn’t magically sleep through the night, it felt undeniably easier to allow her to self-soothe from a separate room. The emotional distance, surprisingly, made it easier to trust her innate ability to fall back asleep.

Over the next few weeks, we diligently stuck to the new routine. Slowly but surely, Charlie began sleeping from 7 PM to roughly 7 AM, a monumental achievement! The one consistent interruption was a 4 AM wake-up call. Initially, I didn’t mind, attributing it to her adjusting to the new pattern or genuine hunger. But after several weeks of this predictable early-morning awakening, I knew it was time to address it more proactively. It was clear she wasn’t always hungry; sometimes, she just needed a little nudge to resettle herself.

All smiles and growing fast!

This led to my “tough love” approach. When I knew she wasn’t hungry, I allowed her the space to soothe herself back to sleep. This strategy proved successful about 70% of the time, which, for a sleep-deprived parent, felt like a massive win! Every night remains a unique journey, and she continues to improve, consolidating her sleep and developing crucial self-soothing skills. This newfound consistency has brought more predictability to our evenings, allowing Bret and me to reclaim a bit of much-needed adult time.

Fourth Month Wellness Check-Up: Celebrating Growth Milestones

Beyond her impressive sleep advancements, Charlie also had her fourth-month wellness appointment, where we celebrated her physical development. She officially weighed in at a healthy 12 lbs 13 ounces. What’s truly astonishing is that she has doubled her birth weight in just four short months! This rapid growth is a testament to her healthy development and our commitment to her well-being. She has also proudly transitioned into size one diapers and has completely outgrown her 0-3 month clothing, now sporting adorable outfits in larger sizes. Seeing these milestones charted by her pediatrician filled us with immense pride and reassurance.

Solo Travel with Baby: Conquering Charlie’s First Flight

Charlie’s first airplane journey was also my inaugural experience flying solo with a baby. The mere thought of it triggered a wave of high anxiety. The preparation alone felt like a military operation. What I learned, above all else, is that practice truly makes perfect. I’m not exaggerating when I say I meticulously rehearsed the entire travel day flow several times before the actual trip. Knowing I’d be navigating everything without an extra set of hands, I wanted every motion, every transition, to feel familiar and smooth.

Pre-Flight Practice: My Secret Weapon

My kitchen table became my mock security checkpoint. I practiced taking items out of the diaper bag with one hand, collapsing the stroller while simultaneously putting Charlie into her baby carrier, and placing “items” (pretend luggage) onto the “screening machine.” These seemingly small, repetitive actions were crucial. It’s the minor fumbles – the ones you don’t anticipate until you’re actually in the thick of it – that can amplify stress. By rehearsing, I aimed to eliminate any foreign movements or moments of hesitation. Yes, it sounds “effing crazy,” as I thought at the time, but the payoff was immeasurable. When I arrived at the airport, my anxiety, though present, was manageable because I had that foundation of practice. Moreover, I was heartened to discover that people are genuinely incredibly helpful when they see a parent struggling with a child. Props to humanity indeed!

Happy travels! Charlie’s first flight was a success.

Aside from a brief period of fussiness during our descent – which is completely normal due to ear pressure changes – Charlie was an absolute star. In fact, she seemed to revel in the experience! The multitude of new sights and sounds captivated her. I truly believe that children possess an innate curiosity and love for travel, and I’m already eagerly anticipating taking Charlie on countless more adventures. A key takeaway for parents is the importance of remaining calm. Babies are incredibly attuned to our emotions; if we’re stressed, they’ll pick up on it. A calm, smiling parent often leads to a calm, smiling baby, creating a more pleasant experience for everyone on board.

My Journey Back to Work: Balancing Motherhood and Career

January 1st marked my official return to work, and I won’t lie, it took me a “HAWT” second to find my rhythm again. The last time I truly tested a recipe and cooked with full focus was back in August, before Charlie’s arrival! There was a brief period of adjustment, feeling a bit rusty in the kitchen. However, by the second or third day, it felt like muscle memory kicked in, and I found my groove, once again feeling comfortable and confident in my creative space.

Back in my element: cooking and creating.

My current work schedule involves cooking and photographing in the mornings, precisely during Charlie’s nap time. This precious window gives me about an hour and a half to get everything done. It demands meticulous preparation and intense focus to accomplish my tasks effectively. This new constraint, surprisingly, has been a blessing in disguise. It has made me incredibly mindful of my time and has helped me redefine my priorities and vision for the blog. Having a child undoubtedly shifts one’s perspective, bringing a sharper focus to what truly matters and how I want to invest my energy.

Overall, I feel genuinely good about being back at work. It’s a different dynamic now, but one I’m embracing. I’m not entirely sure how things will evolve once Charlie becomes more mobile and requires even more active supervision. For now, however, I’m simply savoring this phase of being a working mom, finding joy in both my professional passions and my incredible role as a mother.
