Finding Solace in the Snow: A Weekend Escape to Colorado’s Majestic Mountains

Remember that feeling of being completely overwhelmed? The kind of week where even the simplest tasks, like laundry or grocery shopping, feel like insurmountable challenges? Where your default dinner option becomes takeout, and your DVR list from over a year ago finally gets some attention? That was my reality just a few days ago. I mentioned on Thursday that all I truly needed was a restorative weekend in the mountains with my cherished “Denver Village” to regain my equilibrium. Well, dear friends, I am thrilled to report that this girl is officially back on the yellow brick road, with Oz firmly in sight, and the wicked witch of stress is undeniably going down.

The Therapeutic Embrace of the Rocky Mountains

Living in Colorado offers a unique privilege: the ability to leave our everyday worries behind and immerse ourselves in the natural grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, finding a profound sense of re-centering. People often ask me why I journey to the mountains almost every single weekend. My answer is always the same: the mountains are, in essence, one magnificent, silent therapist. They demand nothing in return, only your presence. You can show up, unload whatever is on your mind, and simply exist as your authentic self. There’s a beautiful simplicity in how nature provides such deep solace and perspective. The crisp mountain air, the panoramic vistas, the sheer scale of the peaks – it all combines to create an environment perfect for mental and emotional rejuvenation. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the best way to heal is to disconnect from the mundane and reconnect with something far greater.

But enough of my philosophical musings; let’s dive into the exhilarating details of our mountain adventure!

Beaver Creek: Sunshine, Speed, and Sensational Apres-Ski

A Perfect Saturday on the Slopes

Our Denver Village crew decided to grace the pristine slopes of Beaver Creek on Saturday afternoon, and the weather was nothing short of exquisite. Friends, I’m talking about a truly spectacular day – the kind you dream of for a ski trip. Not a single cloud marred the brilliant blue sky, and temperatures soared to a delightful forty-five degrees Fahrenheit. It was so warm and inviting, you could almost imagine skiing in a bikini, though we opted for more practical attire. The snow was soft and forgiving, a joy to carve through, making for an unforgettable experience on one of Colorado’s premier ski resorts.

Following our usual routine, the girls — Listy, Katie, and I — stuck together. This is primarily because the guys, bless their adventurous hearts, operate on an entirely different plane of existence. Their idea of a fun run involves Mach 10 speeds down double black diamonds and hucking themselves off forty-foot cliffs. While we admire their daredevil spirit, we prefer a slightly less extreme, and significantly more social, approach to skiing. Our pace allowed us to fully soak in the breathtaking scenery and enjoy uninterrupted conversations.

Chairlift Confessions and Mountain Merriment

Listy, Katie, and I always have an absolute blast skiing together. There’s a saying, “if these walls could talk,” but I think I’m going to update that to, “if these chairlifts could talk.” Between the three of us, we can dissect and resolve any boy troubles, debate fashion dilemmas, or conquer social media concerns in a matter of minutes. These chairlift rides aren’t just about ascending the mountain; they’re our mobile confessional booths and problem-solving sessions, filled with laughter, supportive advice, and the joy of shared friendship against a backdrop of stunning snow-capped peaks. It’s truly one of the highlights of our ski days.

While we were catching up and waiting for Megan to join us, the boys managed to circle back. They are incredibly entertaining, always bringing a dose of unexpected humor to our outings. Could you spot Cook’s face peeking out between Mr. B’s skis in that photo? It’s these small, spontaneous moments that make our trips so memorable. However, the undisputed “best in show” for mountain antics that day was undoubtedly Tom’s epic headstand. It was a feat of balance and bravado, truly spectacular. But what makes the photo even more priceless is the little girl in the background, absolutely transfixed by Tom’s performance, clearly oblivious to her mother’s presence. It was freakin’ hysterical, a perfect snapshot of mountain fun!

We managed a couple more runs as a combined group, which mostly involved the girls watching the guys defy gravity in the terrain park. Soon after, Listy and I dashed off to pick up Chance from daycare. Listy and Max had discovered a truly wonderful lady in Avon who watches Chance during the day, allowing both of them to fully enjoy their ski time. It’s a brilliant arrangement that highlights the adaptability and resourcefulness of parents in the ski community, ensuring everyone gets to experience the mountain magic.

The Ultimate Apres-Ski Experience at Arrowhead

After collecting Chance, we made our way back to the base of Arrowhead, another charming base area of Beaver Creek Mountain, to reconvene with everyone for a quintessential apres-ski session. The word on the street, whispered amongst seasoned skiers and locals, was that they served the absolute best Bloody Marys around. Of course, such a bold claim required thorough investigation.

And let me tell you, the rumors were unequivocally true – it was the best. bloody. mary. ever. They use Kettle One as their house vodka, a choice that speaks volumes about their commitment to quality. Apparently, McCormick’s simply wouldn’t do for this establishment! But while the vodka was premium, it wasn’t the true star of the show. Oh no. The garnish, my friends, won me over hook, line, and sinker. It was a masterpiece of savory delights: a medley of salami, crisp cucumber, ripe tomato, a spicy pepper, a briny olive, refreshing lime and lemon, and generous cubes of Monterey Jack cheese. And, as if that weren’t enough, it was crowned with one GIANT, perfectly crunchy celery stalk. Pretty sa-sweet, huh? It wasn’t just a drink; it was a mini-meal and an experience in itself, perfectly embodying the indulgent spirit of apres-ski.

We basked in the warmth of the setting sun, absorbed the lively tunes from a local band, and joyously toasted to what had been nothing short of a perfect ski day. The camaraderie, the fantastic weather, and that incredible Bloody Mary created an indelible memory. The energy was infectious, a true celebration of friendship and mountain life.

Since we couldn’t quite bear for the day’s festivities to end with the slopes, we transitioned to the Gore Range Brewery in Edwards for more drinks and delicious appetizers. We found a spot on the patio, catching up with our good friends, the Westerman’s, who reside in Basalt. It was a wonderful opportunity to share stories from our day and simply enjoy each other’s company. As the evening progressed, we watched the thrilling finales of various college conference championships unfold on the screens. Oh, and somewhere amidst the laughter and conversation, we all indulged in a round of zesty lemon drop shots – a perfect cap to an already fantastic Saturday evening.

Keystone: A Different Kind of Adventure

Challenging Conditions and Changing Plans

The following morning, Sunday, Mr. B, Cook, and I headed to Keystone to meet up with the Yorks for a bit of afternoon skiing before our drive back to Denver. It had been an eternity, god knows how long, since I last skied Keystone. In my honest opinion, Keystone isn’t typically my top choice for a ski mountain. The etiquette of the average skier or snowboarder there can be a little rough around the edges, and it’s almost always super crowded, which can detract from the overall experience. We were hoping for a pleasant surprise, but the day had other plans.

The weather, unfortunately, wasn’t quite as warm and inviting as Beaver Creek’s glorious Saturday. More significantly, the snow conditions were, to put it mildly, terrible. We bravely attempted two runs, both of which felt less like skiing on powder and more like navigating a treacherous sheet of ice. Can you feel my excitement through the screen? The challenge was undeniable, but the enjoyment factor was significantly diminished. It quickly became clear that this wasn’t going to be the kind of ski day we had envisioned, prompting a swift pivot in our plans.

Gaper Watching: The Unofficial Keystone Pastime

Since the snow was truly horrible and offered little in the way of enjoyable skiing, we decided to embrace the situation by taking some photos and enjoying an impromptu apres-ski session at the “beach” area. This decision perfectly encapsulated the classic ski adage: “A bad day of skiing is still a good day at the bar.” We found a spot to relax, soak in whatever sunshine was available, and shift our focus from challenging terrain to people-watching. It’s amazing how quickly a frustrating day on the slopes can transform when you decide to change your perspective.

What’s the best entertainment on a bad snow day, you ask? Gaper watching, of course! For the uninitiated, “gapers” are less experienced skiers or snowboarders who often provide unintentional comedic relief. In just thirty minutes, we witnessed approximately fifteen “yard sales” – where a person loses all their gear in a spectacular tumble. It was a frequent occurrence because people would come barreling down the icy mountain, suddenly see the growing crowd at the base, throw on the brakes too late, and then, boom, they’d go flying like monkeys with wings. It was genuinely good entertainment, and honestly, it was hard not to laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all. However, recognizing the increasing potential for someone to get seriously hurt, we ultimately decided it was time to head in before things escalated too much.

Refreshed and Ready: The Power of a Mountain Getaway

Despite the contrasting experiences between Beaver Creek and Keystone, this weekend was precisely what I needed to clear my head and hit the reset button. The blend of glorious sunshine and perfect runs, lively apres-ski celebrations, and even the comedic relief of a challenging ski day, all contributed to a profound sense of rejuvenation. The mountains, in their varied forms, once again proved to be the ultimate antidote to stress and the perfect backdrop for creating cherished memories with my Denver Village. I can safely say that by tomorrow, the wicked witch of overwhelm won’t even know what melted her. The energy and perspective gained from this Colorado ski adventure have fully recharged me, setting the stage for a productive week ahead.

Alright, with a refreshed spirit and a heart full of gratitude, I am off to enjoy the evening. Hooray for Daylight Savings and the longer, brighter days ahead, signaling even more opportunities for mountain escapes and unforgettable adventures!
