Crispy Fried Chicken and Honey Waffle Tots

Prepare for an unforgettable culinary journey as we unveil a dish that masterfully blends comfort food with innovative flair: perfectly crispy fried chicken paired with delightful golden waffle-tots, all exquisitely finished with a generous drizzle of sweet honey. This unique combination offers a symphony of textures and flavors that promises to awaken your taste buds and leave you craving more. It’s a celebration on a plate, ideal for special occasions or simply elevating your everyday dining experience.

Today marks a special milestone for me – it’s my birthday! As I celebrate my thirty-second year, there’s a part of me that still marvels at reaching this point, feeling like time has both flown by and stood still. Some days, I still possess the boundless energy and playful spirit of a much younger self, while others bring a quiet reflection on the journey so far. This year, I’m ready to embrace all that thirty-two has to offer, infusing it with joy, excitement, and, of course, delicious food.

There’s an undeniable joy in marking another year around the sun, and what better way to do so than with food that brings pure happiness? My birthday philosophy is simple: indulge in the things you love most. This year, that means a perfect blend of nostalgic comfort and a touch of modern culinary magic. While the day’s agenda might include a leisurely stroll through a favorite department store, perhaps a rejuvenating facial, and a special dinner out with Mr. B, the absolute essential for any birthday celebration in my book is homemade chocolate cake with creamy marshmallow frosting. Because, truly, what’s a birthday without cake?

And then, there are tater tots. Not just any tater tots, mind you, but waffle-tots! I’ve been eagerly anticipating the perfect moment to share this incredible recipe, and my birthday feels like the most fitting occasion to unveil this culinary gem. The inspiration for the waffle-tot came to me a few months ago, thanks to a wonderful tip from my dear friend and fellow food enthusiast, Liz, from The Lemon Bowl. When she shared the ingenious idea of transforming humble tater tots into crispy hash brown-like waffles using a waffle iron, I was instantly captivated. The sheer brilliance and simplicity of it sent a jolt of excitement through me. It was a revelation that promised to elevate a classic comfort food to an entirely new level of deliciousness.

The concept of waffle-tots is pure genius. Imagine the beloved crispy exterior and fluffy interior of a tater tot, but with an enhanced surface area for maximum crispness and a delightful, waffle-like pattern. This innovative approach to cooking tater tots doesn’t just make them look fun; it transforms their texture, creating an irresistible bite that’s perfect for pairing with a variety of savory dishes. The moment I first tried them, I knew they were destined to become a staple in my kitchen, especially for those times when I want to add a playful yet sophisticated twist to a meal.

Crafting these golden wonders is incredibly straightforward. The secret lies in allowing the frozen tater tots to thaw just enough so they are pliable but still hold their shape. This partial thawing ensures they compress perfectly in the waffle iron without turning into a mushy mess. Once they reach the ideal consistency, simply arrange them evenly on a preheated waffle iron. As you press down gently, the tots begin to meld and crisp up, developing that characteristic waffle pattern and turning a beautiful golden brown. The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water!

Once removed from the waffle iron, these crispy delights are ready to be the perfect base for our star attraction: my famous 15-minute skillet fried chicken. This chicken is a masterpiece in itself – tender, juicy, and coated in a perfectly seasoned, crunchy crust. The final touch that brings the entire dish together is a generous drizzle of honey over both the chicken and the waffle-tots. The sweet, sticky honey provides a stunning counterpoint to the savory, salty crunch of the chicken and tots, creating a harmonious balance of flavors that is truly addictive. It’s a combination that truly demands a moment of silence and appreciation – a symphony of taste that celebrates indulgence in the best way possible.

This dish is more than just a meal; it’s an experience. The textural contrast between the ultra-crispy waffle-tots and the succulent fried chicken is simply divine. Each bite offers a satisfying crunch followed by tender, flavorful meat. And then, the honey, with its warm, golden sweetness, ties everything together, adding a layer of sophisticated comfort. It transforms a simple plate of fried chicken and potatoes into something extraordinary, making it perfect for a festive occasion like a birthday or a comforting weekend dinner.

For those looking to elevate their cooking, remember that quality ingredients make all the difference. For the fried chicken, choosing boneless, skinless chicken thighs ensures tenderness and quick cooking, while the buttermilk brine keeps the chicken incredibly moist. Don’t be shy with the seasoning in your flour mixture; it’s what gives the chicken its amazing flavor and beautiful golden hue. And for the waffle-tots, patience is key during the partial thawing stage – it makes all the difference in achieving that ideal crispy texture. A little sprinkle of salt after they come off the waffle iron will also enhance their natural flavor.

As I savor each delicious bite of this meal, I can’t help but feel a surge of joyful energy. It’s the kind of food that makes you want to celebrate, to feel vibrant and alive. This dish perfectly embodies the spirit of my thirty-second birthday – a blend of comfort, excitement, and a touch of playful innovation. It’s about embracing joy, creating delicious memories, and savoring every moment. So, go ahead, crank up your favorite celebratory tunes, gather your loved ones, and prepare to create some culinary magic in your own kitchen. This fried chicken and waffle-tots with honey is sure to be a showstopper!

Fried Chicken and Waffle-Tots with Honey

Yield: Serves 4

Prep Time: 1 hour

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

for the skillet fried chicken:
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1.5 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
2 cups buttermilk
1 egg, whisked
1 teaspoon Tabasco
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
Honey, for garnish
Fresh parsley, for garnish
Confectioners’ sugar, for garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

for the waffle-tots:
1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius).

For the Skillet Fried Chicken:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the buttermilk, whisked egg, Tabasco sauce, and a generous pinch of salt and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  2. Add the boneless, skinless chicken thighs to the buttermilk mixture, ensuring they are fully submerged. Let them sit in the marinade for at least 15-30 minutes, or longer if time permits, for maximum flavor and tenderness.
  3. In a separate shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cayenne pepper, and a pinch of salt and black pepper. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot enough to sizzle when a small drop of water is added, but not smoking.
  5. One by one, remove a piece of chicken from the buttermilk marinade, allowing any excess to drip off. Dredge the chicken liberally in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Gently shake off any excess flour.
  6. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. You may need to cook in batches.
  7. Cook the chicken for approximately 5 minutes on the first side, until a beautiful golden-brown crust forms.
  8. Flip the chicken pieces, then immediately transfer the skillet into the preheated oven.
  9. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius).
  10. Once cooked, carefully remove the skillet from the oven and let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving.

For the Waffle-Tots:

  1. Open the bag of frozen tater tots. Spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Allow them to thaw at room temperature for about thirty minutes, or until they are only partially frozen and slightly pliable. This is crucial for them to flatten correctly in the waffle iron.
  2. While the tots are thawing, preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease the waffle iron plates if necessary.
  3. Once the waffle iron is hot, arrange about 15 to 20 partially thawed tater tots evenly onto the waffle iron plates. Do not overcrowd.
  4. Slowly and firmly press down on the lid of the waffle iron, flattening the tots into a single, cohesive waffle.
  5. Cook the waffle-tots for approximately two to three minutes, or until they are deeply golden brown and wonderfully crispy. Cooking time may vary depending on your waffle iron.
  6. Carefully remove the cooked waffle-tots from the waffle iron and immediately sprinkle them with a pinch of salt to enhance their flavor.
  7. Repeat this process with the remaining tater tots until all have been transformed into crispy waffle-tots.

To Serve:

  1. Arrange two waffle-tot squares on each serving plate.
  2. Top the waffle-tots with a piece of the skillet fried chicken, or slice the chicken in half for easier serving.
  3. Generously drizzle honey over the fried chicken and waffle-tots.
  4. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and a dusting of confectioners’ sugar for an elegant finish. Serve immediately and enjoy!
