A Whirlwind Christmas Adventure: Three Days of Festive Magic in NYC and New Canaan
What an incredible journey! Our recent three-day escapade was a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of festive cheer, culinary delights, and unforgettable urban exploration. As one friend aptly put it, we managed to cram a plethora of activities into one action-packed weekend, truly making the most of every moment during this special pre-holiday season.
Day 1: Arrival in NYC and an East Village Gem
Our adventure kicked off on a crisp Friday afternoon as we touched down in the heart of New York City. A swift cab ride whisked us away to the charming Upper East Side, where we dropped our bags and braced ourselves for another marathon weekend. It had been far too long – since ’07, to be precise – since we’d had quality time with our dear friends Doug and Michael outside of family gatherings. So, the moment we settled in, we uncorked a bottle of fine red wine, eager to catch up on every detail, every story, and every shared laugh that time had kept from us. The air was thick with anticipation, not just for the upcoming holiday festivities, but for the sheer joy of reconnecting.
With an early train to New Canaan, Connecticut, looming the next morning for the first leg of our Christmas party tour, we decided on a relaxed local dinner. Michael’s suggestion was met with immediate enthusiasm: a visit to Indochine, a place they hadn’t frequented in a while. Why not indeed? The allure of its reputation alone was enough to pique our interest, promising a memorable start to our culinary explorations.
Indochine: A Timeless East Village Culinary Experience
Side Note: Stepping into Indochine is like being transported to another era and continent. This iconic French-Vietnamese restaurant, nestled in the vibrant East Village, first opened its doors in 1984 and has since remained a beloved institution. Its enduring appeal lies not just in its exquisite cuisine but also in its enchanting tropical decor, which effortlessly sets a sophisticated yet relaxed mood. On that chilly NYC night, the warm ambiance wrapped around us like a comforting embrace.
Our palates were treated to an array of sublime dishes: perfectly grilled eggplant, succulent seared lamb loin, delicate steamed Chilean sea bass, and a perfectly roasted Cornish hen. Each plate was a testament to the restaurant’s culinary mastery, blending rich flavors with elegant presentation. If you ever find yourself wandering the bustling streets of New York City, a visit to Indochine isn’t just recommended; it’s an absolute imperative. It’s a place where history, atmosphere, and gastronomic excellence converge to create an unforgettable dining experience that truly epitomizes the city’s diverse culinary landscape.
Day 2: Architectural Marvels and Christmas Extravaganzas
Rise and shine! The morning arrived sooner than desired, given our late departure from Indochine around 1:30 AM, but the show, as they say, must go on. There’s no room for hesitation or fatigue when embarking on our adventures. This trip was all about embracing every moment, regardless of how little sleep we managed to squeeze in.
I headed out early with Michael to catch an express train to New Canaan, leaving Doug and Bret to follow a little later. My mission was to assist Michael with the setup for our first Christmas party of the weekend, and let me tell you, it was a mad dash against the clock to ensure everything was perfect. (A gentle hint to Michael: inviting us earlier next year might save a few frantic moments!)
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by their new bridge house – though “new” is a relative term here. This extraordinary residence was designed by none other than the legendary Philip Johnson during his most prolific period, as a significant part of the renowned Harvard Five architects. Doug and Michael are incredibly fortunate to be only the second owners of this architectural masterpiece since its commission over 60 years ago, a true testament to its timeless design and enduring appeal. It was a privilege to step into such a historically significant and beautifully preserved home.
Michael has dedicated the past two years to a meticulous renovation, tirelessly working to bring the house up to modern standards while reverently preserving its essential design and architectural integrity. His passion for this unique property was evident in every detail, striking a perfect balance between contemporary comfort and historical reverence. This careful restoration ensures that the spirit of Johnson’s vision lives on, adapted for a new generation.
The project is nearing completion, and we are absolutely buzzing with excitement to return this summer and witness the finished product in all its glory. Assuming, of course, that we’ll be invited back after this weekend… (we might just be a little too much fun for the boys, but in the best possible way!).
The party itself unfolded flawlessly. The atmosphere was incredibly warm and welcoming, filled with friendly, engaging conversations. We had the pleasure of making several new acquaintances, enjoying the vibrant energy that only a holiday gathering can generate. My cousin AJ, a seasoned veteran of Christmas parties, played an indispensable role, helping orchestrate everything beautifully. This being his second time assisting with the annual festive event, he expertly navigated all the logistical traps and took care of every intricate detail, ensuring a smooth and delightful experience for all.
West Village Delights and Late-Night Eats
All aboard for the next stop on our festive express! The fun was just beginning as we headed to a West Village Christmas party. Space in the city is a precious commodity, so we were quite astonished by the sheer number of people packed into the next gathering. Yet, despite the crowd, there was no need for worry; easy access to the bar and an abundance of delicious snacks spread across the tables kept everyone happy. This weekend truly blessed us with the opportunity to meet some incredibly cool people. Bernard, an MTV producer hailing from San Diego, was one such memorable encounter. We quickly discovered a surprising amount in common, particularly given that Denver, where we reside, often feels like San Diego’s laid-back western counterpart.
Next stop: Dinner! Yes, it was already 1:00 AM, and our stomachs were rumbling with profound hunger. I liken myself to a reverse Mogwai from Gremlins – if I only drink and neglect to eat, I tend to get a little… GRUMPY. We all have our quirks, and this is certainly one of mine. Mr. B, on the other hand, was an absolute rockstar throughout the entire evening. I think he truly needed this opportunity to let off some steam and simply have some fun for a change. It had been a demanding year for everyone, and Christmas, after all, is the perfect excuse to embrace a little joyous madness and celebrate with abandon.
We barely made it to The Standard Hotel just before the kitchen closed, and man, did we need that sustenance. A perfectly grilled cheese sandwich, a generous serving of crispy French fries, a refreshing Moscow Mule, and a chance encounter with a Glee star later, I was a supremely happy girl. It was the perfect ending to an exhilarating, albeit exhausting, second day of our holiday adventure.
Day 3: Soho Style, Midtown Sparkle, and the Main Event
Sunday, traditionally a day for rest and relaxation – unless, of course, you’re traveling with us! We did manage to sleep in a little, a much-needed indulgence after a very late night. The exact hour of our return remains a delightful blur, but that’s precisely why God invented cabs. While some of us enjoyed a brief reprieve, Mr. B and AJ, ever the early risers, made a swift dash to the corner market to gather a delightful brunch for everyone. Bagels and lox, a classic New York treat, proved to be the perfect antidote and ideal hangover food, setting us right for another day of exploration.
With the boys fully immersed in the bustling preparations for the evening’s final party at their place, the three of us – AJ, Mr. B, and I – took to the vibrant streets of the city. Mr. B, not entirely satisfied with his shirt selection for the upcoming main event, decided we needed to venture into Soho to find a more suitable option. Soho, with its trendy boutiques and stylish atmosphere, was the ideal destination for a spontaneous fashion quest. We wandered through its charming cobblestone streets, admiring the unique storefronts and soaking in the artistic energy of the neighborhood. It’s always a delight to explore the city’s distinct areas, each offering its own unique flavor and appeal, even if the primary mission is something as simple as finding the perfect party shirt.
With Mr. B’s wardrobe dilemma expertly solved, it was time to hustle back for the final party preparations. But first, a mandatory detour: Madison Avenue and its spectacular Christmas decorations! I don’t know about you, but this particular year seemed to feel busier and more demanding than usual, making it a bit challenging to fully immerse myself in the Christmas spirit. That is, until we witnessed the breathtaking midtown decorations. There’s truly nothing quite like a ridiculously large, sparkling snowflake majestically suspended over a bustling intersection to ignite that undeniable festive joy. The sheer scale and brilliance of the lights, the vibrant colors, and the palpable holiday cheer permeating the air were instantly infectious, transforming any lingering stress into pure excitement.
Now, I’m officially pumped and ready for anything!
A quick change of attire and we were off to our third and final party of the weekend – the main event! This was the gathering we had been eagerly anticipating all weekend, not just for the festive atmosphere but for the chance to finally meet Doug and Michael’s closest friends. It was a wonderful opportunity to truly connect with the people who form their core circle, sharing stories and laughter. To our incredible hosts, if either of you ever actually reads this, please know: THANK YOU. Your generosity, hospitality, and friendship made this entire trip an unforgettable highlight of our holiday season.
Looking Ahead: More Holiday Adventures!
As one incredible journey concludes, another awaits! Next up on our holiday itinerary is Christmas in Wichita with Mr. B’s family, followed by celebrations in Kansas City with the wonderful Wurths. Who’s ready for another adventure-filled trip? This girl certainly is! The spirit of the holidays, filled with family, friends, and festive travel, continues to inspire and excite us. We’re already looking forward to creating more cherished memories and sharing the joy of the season across different cities. The journey never truly ends when you have so much to celebrate and so many loved ones to share it with.
