Day 3: Conquering the Waves & French Rugby

A Surfer’s Paradise: Cote des Basque

Friday morning dawned with a sense of anticipation as we embarked on an experience synonymous with Biarritz: surfing lessons at the world-renowned Cote des Basque. This iconic beach holds a special place in Europe’s surfing history, being the very spot where the sport was first introduced to the continent back in the 1950s. Nestled dramatically between towering cliffs, Cote des Basque offers a unique surfing landscape. While high tide can diminish the sandy stretch, it simultaneously creates the perfect conditions for catching some of the best waves in the region, making it an unmissable destination for both seasoned surfers and curious beginners alike.

Embracing the Surf Culture: Our Lesson Begins

To be entirely honest, neither Mr. B nor I harbored any grand illusions of effortlessly gliding across the waves. Our expectations were modest, anticipating more flailing than surfing, likely culminating in us swallowing a good portion of the Atlantic. But fuelled by a quintessential French breakfast of freshly pressed coffee and buttery croissants – truly the breakfast of champions – we made our way to the bustling boardwalk. This vibrant stretch is a hub of surf culture, lined with an array of surf shops, charming dive restaurants, and inviting hotels, all contributing to the lively atmosphere that defines Biarritz’s coastal appeal. The air buzzed with energy, a mix of salty sea spray and eager anticipation, setting the perfect stage for our aquatic adventure.

Wet Suits, Wobbly Boards, and the First Wave

Upon checking in at the surf school, we were directed to change into our wetsuits. It quickly became apparent that French modesty operates on a different spectrum; the changing rooms were, in fact, one large communal space. Thankfully, with a sports bra and undies already on, donning the wetsuit over them was a relatively discreet affair. Suited up, we met our instructor, Jean, who presented us with what appeared to be an enormous, neon-yellow “nerf board.” For a fleeting moment, we imagined ourselves as instant surfing pros, only for Jean to humorously clarify that these were typically reserved for teaching children. Our budding confidence took a slight, amusing dip.

As previously mentioned, our hopes of standing were minimal. Jean began with a quick but crucial four-step demonstration on land: lie flat, execute a peculiar downward dog-like pose, swiftly pop up and plant the feet, and finally, balance. It sounded deceptively simple. After a mere four-and-a-half-second dry-land lesson, it was time to brave the ocean. We ventured into what Jean called the “kiddie section,” but to us, the waves still felt like towering nine-foot monsters. Jean instructed us to lie on our boards, then, with a booming voice, he’d yell, “PADDLE, PADDLE, PADDLE!”

Against All Odds: Standing Tall on the Biarritz Waves

We paddled with an uncoordinated enthusiasm, resembling dogs trying to swim for the first time. Mid-paddle, Jean’s next command would echo: “UP! UP! UP!” We’d attempt to stand, inevitably resulting in a face-plant into the refreshingly salty Atlantic. Mr. B, with surprising agility, managed to stand up and ride a wave after just three attempts. Yours truly required a bit more perseverance – about six attempts, punctuated by an additional land lesson for good measure, to finally get the hang of it. The sensation of the cold water rushing past, the instability of the board beneath, and the sheer concentration required were immense, but the payoff was unlike anything else.

The moment I finally stood, wobbled, and then truly rode that wave all the way to the shore was pure magic. I emerged from the ocean yelling with unbridled joy, “Yes! Absolutely, heck, yes!”—a celebratory outburst that made me feel like I’d just won the lottery. Jean, our patient instructor, was visibly impressed, and for me, his acknowledgment was victory enough. It was a testament to the fact that with a little persistence, anyone can experience the thrill of surfing in Biarritz.

Post-Surf Delights: Fueling Up Basque Style

Bidding a grateful farewell to Jean, our focus immediately shifted to finding sustenance. Surfing is an incredible workout; paddling between waves is surprisingly exhausting, leaving one with an insatiable hunger. It’s no wonder surfers boast such incredible physiques. Before our arms started to gnaw themselves off, we made a beeline for Little Beach, a charming pizza parlor just down the street. The thought of a hearty meal was immensely appealing after our strenuous morning.

A cold beer paired with a unique pizza, generously topped with a perfectly runny egg, was exactly what our sore, rubbery arms and depleted energy levels craved. The combination was surprisingly delicious and utterly satisfying, a perfect culinary reward for our surfing conquest. This simple yet profound meal felt like the ultimate comfort food after such an active morning on the waves.

Sweet Victory: Gateau Basque Ice Cream

To truly commemorate our success in conquering the waves, we indulged in a regional specialty: Gateau Basque ice cream. This traditional Basque dessert, a rich cake often filled with cherry or pastry cream, was transformed into a delightfully creamy and sweet ice cream. It was the perfect celebratory treat, a burst of local flavor that perfectly capped off our adventurous morning and satisfying lunch. Every spoonful felt like a taste of victory, a sweet memory of our time in Biarritz.

An Afternoon of Relaxation and Rosé

Fortunately, our afternoon schedule was blissfully free, allowing for some much-needed relaxation after our physically demanding surf lesson. We spent the hours unwinding at our accommodation, delving into books and catching up on some quiet reading. I remember remarking to Mr. B, “Remember when people actually had time to read for pleasure?” It felt like a luxurious indulgence in our fast-paced lives. After a delightful siesta, a habit we had eagerly adopted during our trip, we poured ourselves glasses of crisp rosé. I had always been hesitant about rosé wines, but I must confess, there’s something about enjoying a glass of wine in France that elevates the experience entirely. The setting, the culture, the sheer joy of the moment – it all conspired to make that rosé taste truly exceptional.

Under the Friday Night Lights: French Rugby

As evening approached, we quickly changed and headed out for an unexpected but thrilling event: a rugby match! While I have a deep appreciation for American football, I must admit, rugby offers an entirely different level of intensity and athleticism. The players were formidable, built like oak trees; one particular player’s leg seemed as massive as two of my heads combined – truly impressive. We had the opportunity to watch a local Biarritz team compete against a team from Paris. It was easy to guess which players hailed from Paris, given their vibrant pink jerseys!

The game was nothing short of exciting and incredibly intense from the very start. Within the first three minutes, we witnessed a powerful tackle that left a player winded, showcasing the raw physicality of the sport. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, filled with passionate cheers and gasps from the fervent local supporters. It was a truly immersive cultural experience, revealing another facet of French life beyond the beaches and gourmet food. The sheer power, strategy, and camaraderie on the field were captivating, leaving a lasting impression.

Day 4: Luxury, Leisure, and Lively Dinners

Poolside Elegance at Hotel du Palais

Saturday was earmarked as a blissful pool day, a perfect way to unwind before our journey back to Paris on Sunday. The question was, which pool in Biarritz offers an unparalleled ocean view and a touch of grandeur? The answer was unequivocally the Hotel du Palais. This magnificent establishment, once a palace built for Empress Eugénie by Napoleon III, now stands as a beacon of luxury overlooking the Atlantic. Spending the day there felt like stepping back in time while enjoying modern comforts.

We luxuriated under the warm Biarritz sun, occasionally cooling off in the sparkling pool, all while sipping fine French wine. The air was filled with hushed whispers and playful gossip about the various ‘royalty’ and distinguished guests milling about the opulent grounds. It was a glorious bluebird day, and we made sure to soak up every last ounce of sunshine and serenity. The panoramic views of the ocean from the poolside were breathtaking, offering a truly iconic Biarritz experience that perfectly blended relaxation with a touch of historical elegance. Every moment spent there was a reminder of the refined beauty that Biarritz offers.

An Unforgettable Evening in Bidart: La Cucaracha

Our final dinner in the Biarritz area took us to the charming village of Bidart, specifically to a restaurant called La Cucaracha. The name, of course, conjures images of Mexico, and surprisingly, the vibrant atmosphere and lively spirit of the place indeed lent it a distinctly festive, almost Mexican-like feel, despite being firmly in the French Basque Country. We savored our meal al fresco, dining under a canopy of twinkling stars, which added an extra layer of romance to the evening. The menu featured robust red wine, delectable fried oysters, and generous family-style platters of perfectly cooked fish and steak.

The food was so incredibly delicious and the company so engaging that I completely forgot to snap a single photograph of our culinary feast! However, to be entirely honest, the impromptu conga line that erupted in the middle of dinner was far more entertaining and memorable than any picture could capture. The joyous, spontaneous celebration perfectly encapsulated the lively and welcoming spirit of the Basque region. Oye, what a fantastic way to conclude our evenings in Biarritz!

Au Revoir Biarritz, Bonjour Paris!

Cherished Memories and Future Plans

And so, dear friends, our incredible Biarritz saga draws to a close. The next day, we jetted off to Paris, ready to spend a magical 24 hours in the iconic City of Love before beginning our journey back to the States. I’ll have to save the tale of oysters and champagne in Paris for another time!

Our time exploring Biarritz, from its world-class surfing beaches and challenging waves to its luxurious hotels, vibrant rugby matches, and unforgettable dining experiences, was truly an unforgettable adventure. The unique blend of French elegance and Basque culture left an indelible mark on our hearts. We are already dreaming of our next visit to this enchanting corner of France, eager to revisit cherished spots and discover new wonders. Until then, au revoir, Biarritz!
