This historic district, once a bustling port and even a red-light district, narrowly escaped demolition thanks to the passionate advocacy of local residents. Today, it stands as a testament to Puerto Rico’s rich heritage, transformed into a lively cultural mecca brimming with color and character.
Our accommodation in Old San Juan was the exquisite Hotel El Convento, a former convent dating back to the 17th century. The hotel exuded an old-world elegance, with grand wooden doors framing its entrance and stunning tiled staircases that immediately captured my admiration. We checked in past midnight, and while the streets were quiet, a brief stroll allowed us to stretch our legs and glimpse the enchanting architecture under the moonlight. The following morning, we rose early, eager to explore the city’s cobblestone streets, iconic pastel-colored buildings, and historic fortresses, soaking in every bit of its captivating history and beauty.
Seamless Travel to Vieques: The Puddle Jumper Experience
From San Juan, there are primarily two ways to reach Vieques: a ferry ride or a short flight on a “puddle jumper.” While the ferry is a more budget-friendly option, it comes with a caveat: locals receive priority for seating, meaning a ticket doesn’t always guarantee a spot. Moreover, the thought of a potentially choppy two-hour ferry ride and seasickness wasn’t appealing for our relaxing getaway. Opting for convenience and comfort, we chose to fly. Despite the small size of the plane, the 25-minute journey offered breathtaking aerial views of the azure Caribbean Sea, making it an experience in itself.
Arrival in Vieques: Casa Belle Vue and Wild Horses
Upon landing on Vieques, we were warmly greeted by the property manager from Casa Belle Vue. Unlike many popular tourist destinations, Vieques offers limited traditional hotel options; The W Hotel is the island’s only resort. We preferred a more authentic, home-away-from-home experience, so a rental house was the perfect choice. Before heading to our temporary abode, the property manager kindly drove us to the rental car office to pick up our island wheels.
Our ride? A robust Jeep, perfect for navigating the island’s unique terrain. We felt like seasoned adventurers, blending right in with the local vibe, far from typical tourists!
A delightful surprise at the rental car lot was the sight of wild horses gracefully trotting by as we completed our paperwork. According to local lore, these magnificent creatures are descendants of the horses brought to the Americas by explorers like Christopher Columbus and Ponce De León centuries ago – a living connection to the island’s rich history. It was an enchanting welcome to Vieques’ unique ecosystem.
About an hour later, we arrived at Casa Belle Vue (upper landing), and it was love at first sight. The panoramic views from our terrace were simply breathtaking, offering an unobstructed vista of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the soothing symphony of waves crashing against the shore, a truly immersive experience in relaxation. Beyond the stunning scenery, I was particularly thrilled about the well-equipped kitchen, envisioning ourselves preparing delicious local cuisine during our stay.
Navigating Vieques: Towns, Tips, and Wild Encounters
Our property manager provided an invaluable orientation to the island, outlining the two main towns. We were located in Isabella II, the primary town on the Atlantic side, which serves as the heart of local life and culture. About a 15-minute drive away lies Esperanza, the bustling tourist hub, known for its lively beachfront strip and vibrant atmosphere. A crucial tip for navigating Vieques: keep an eye out for the wild horses; they roam freely across the island, adding to its rustic charm but requiring careful driving. Another local ordinance we learned was to always wear a shirt while driving, as local police will issue tickets for going shirtless. Armed with these insights, we were ready for an unforgettable adventure!
Diving into Adventure: Scuba, Cuisine, and Culture

Underwater Wonders: Scuba Diving in Vieques
Scuba diving was a major highlight of our trip. We completed a total of five dives, four of which were with the excellent Vieques Dive Company. Their dive masters were not only professional but also incredibly fun, guiding us through stunning coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life. For our fifth dive, Mr. B and I embarked on our first independent dive without a dive master. It was both exhilarating and a little nerve-wracking, but the reward was immense: we encountered an astonishing 15-pound starfish, a truly memorable sight!
A Culinary Journey: Savoring Vieques’ Flavors
Our food experiences on Vieques were as rich and varied as the island itself. Grocery shopping, however, presented its unique challenges. Vieques has two main grocery stores, both owned by brothers. The one in Isabella II is generally better stocked but often crowded. We quickly learned that the supply ferry only arrives twice a week with fresh fuel and food, emphasizing the island’s unique rhythm of life. Our single trip to the grocery store took over an hour, a true lesson in island time!
Despite the grocery store madness, our culinary journey was fantastic. We started each morning with eggs and toast on our patio, accompanied by the gentle sea breeze. For dinners at Casa Belle Vue, I ventured into preparing tacos and even spaghetti, which felt surprisingly exotic in this Caribbean setting. Mr. B, ever the culinary explorer, delighted in preparing fresh conch, which we purchased for an incredible six dollars a pound from a local fishmonger – a true taste of the sea and an unbeatable deal!
Dining out was equally memorable. For lunch, we enjoyed a whole fried fish at Duffy’s, a popular local spot. At Lazy Jack’s, we discovered the “painkiller,” a delicious island cocktail, perfect for sunset sips. The best carnita tacos came from a charming food truck called Sol, proving that some of the finest meals can be found in the most unassuming places. Our absolute favorite dining experience, however, was at El Quenepo. This fantastic restaurant was foodie heaven! Its chic yet relaxed ambiance complemented the exquisite dishes perfectly. The ceviche tower of awesomeness was a standout, a vibrant symphony of fresh flavors, closely followed by their succulent fresh prawns.
Echoes of the Past: Exploring Sugar Plantations
Beyond the beaches and dining, we delved into Vieques’ rich history by touring ancient sugar plantations. It was astounding to learn that some of these plantations have existed since the 15th century, with some even operating until as late as 1940. Walking through these historical sites offered a poignant glimpse into the island’s past, contrasting sharply with its present-day tranquility.
Vieques’ Pristine Beaches: Paradise Found
No trip to Vieques would be complete without extensive beach exploration, and the island certainly delivered some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.
Black Beach: Volcanic Beauty
Our first stop was the unique Black Beach, known for its striking dark volcanic sand. Here, we relaxed, sipped our refreshing painkiller drinks, and watched in awe as wild horses galloped freely along the shoreline – a truly idyllic and wild Caribbean scene.
Navio Beach: Our Secluded Heaven
Navio Beach quickly became our absolute favorite. Though the rental car company had advised against visiting it due to the challenging access, our experience trekking Colorado’s backcountry roads gave us confidence. Apart from dodging a few potholes and low-hanging branches, the drive wasn’t overly difficult, and the reward was immeasurable. Upon arrival, we discovered a pristine, utterly deserted stretch of sand – our own private paradise. The water was unbelievably clear, shimmering with the color of a perfect bluebird sky, while the fine, white powder sand felt like walking on clouds. Navio Beach, with its untouched beauty, felt like a glimpse of heaven on Earth.
Blue Beach: Snorkeling and Kayaking Fun
Our final beach stop was the easily accessible Blue Beach. This popular spot is renowned for its excellent snorkeling opportunities, and Mr. B was delighted to spot several Caribbean squids during his underwater exploration. Blue Beach is also ideal for kayaking and makes for a fantastic location for a lively beach party, offering a different kind of vibrant enjoyment.
