An Unforgettable Kansas City Getaway: Family, Festivities, and Hidden Gems
Just returned from an absolutely exhilarating week and weekend in Kansas City, and what a whirlwind it was! From heartwarming family reunions to celebrating a dear friend’s wedding, pushing my limits on a scorching run, and uncovering the secrets of a hidden speakeasy, Kansas City truly delivered an experience for the books. Each visit to this vibrant city leaves me with new cherished memories, and this trip was no exception. Its unique blend of Midwestern charm, rich history, and burgeoning culinary scene makes it a place I always look forward to exploring.
Regrettably, Mr. B couldn’t join me on this adventure. Work commitments and the intricate preparations for our upcoming “Griswold-style” escapade to Steamboat for the 4th of July kept him busy. Can you believe it’s already July 1st? Time truly flies when you’re having fun, and it feels like summer is already halfway through. The realization hit me as I was packing up my bags, making me appreciate every moment of the Kansas City journey even more. But more on that later – let’s dive into the Kansas City highlights!
Day One: Cherished Family Connections and Culinary Delights
My Kansas City journey kicked off on a serene Wednesday afternoon, where I was immediately enveloped in the warmth of my parents’ embrace. I count my blessings daily for having such a loving and unconditionally supportive family. My parents, in particular, are my pillars of strength, always ready to lend an ear and offer the most insightful advice, navigating life’s complexities with wisdom and grace. Our catch-up session, a blend of heartfelt conversations and insightful Q&A about recent events and future plans, set the perfect tone for the rest of my visit, grounding me in their unwavering love.
Following our deeply fulfilling family time, I eagerly made my way to see John, Sarah, and the adorable Miss Josie. Seeing my sweet niece, who is growing incredibly fast, always brings an extra spark of pure joy to my trips. Her innocent giggles and curious eyes are a refreshing break from the daily grind. I decided to channel my inner chef and whipped up a delightful dinner for us all: succulent grilled chicken and savory sausage, perfectly complemented by grilled romaine lettuce drizzled with a tangy Dijon dressing. The aroma filled the kitchen, promising a delicious meal. The evening’s culinary adventure culminated in a cherished tradition – a leisurely walk to Foo’s for some of their renowned frozen custard. The creamy, rich treat, bursting with flavor, was the perfect end to a day filled with love, laughter, and gourmet satisfaction, truly highlighting the local Kansas City dining scene.
Day Two: Baby Cuddles, Family Welcomes, and Pre-Wedding Toasts
Thursday began with the luxury of sleeping in – a rare and much-appreciated treat during my usually packed travel schedules. My first order of business was another much-needed dose of “Josie fix.” It’s truly astonishing how quickly she’s growing; it feels like just yesterday she was a newborn, and now she’s already two months old! Her cheeks, in particular, are becoming increasingly adorable and irresistibly chubby, making every cuddle a moment of pure bliss. Every moment spent with her is a precious reminder of the joy and wonder new life brings, a highlight of any Kansas City visit.
Later in the day, the Wurth Women gathered for a special evening at El Patron, a vibrant spot chosen to formally welcome the soon-to-be Mrs. Toni Wurth into our cherished family circle. Toni is set to marry my Uncle Chuck this coming Sunday, and while Mr. B and I couldn’t extend our stay for the actual ceremony, I made sure to raise a heartfelt toast. I expressed our collective excitement and assured Toni that she is a perfect, much-anticipated addition to our lively gaggle of family members. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine anticipation for the upcoming nuptials, solidifying the bonds of our expanding family. It was a beautiful testament to the power of family, welcoming new members with open arms and joyful spirits, truly embodying the spirit of family travel to Kansas City.
Day Three: Sweating It Out, New Beginnings, and a Fairytale Wedding
Friday dawned bright and early, and by “bright and early,” I mean 6 AM, when the Kansas City humidity had already pushed temperatures to a balmy 80 degrees. This is definitely not typical running weather, but a planned nine-mile run with my friend Jamie was on the agenda. Bless Jamie’s heart; she’s an incredibly fast runner, and her kindness shone through as she matched my pace, enduring the challenging heat right alongside me. Her companionship made the arduous run not only bearable but genuinely enjoyable. We pushed each other through the miles, finding strength in shared effort. She truly is the best running buddy one could ask for, making running in Kansas City a memorable experience even in the heat.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the run had a silver lining: my feet felt significantly better, a welcome relief! A huge shoutout to the Kansas City Trolley Trail for its flat terrain and mostly dirt path, which provided a gentle surface, minimizing impact and making the miles fly by. Post-run, we refueled with much-needed grub at Eggtc, a popular local dining spot. The combination of freshly brewed coffee and protein-packed breakfast items – fluffy omelets and crispy bacon – never tasted so good, a true reward after a strenuous workout and an excellent way to experience local Kansas City cuisine.
After a quick refreshing shower, I met Jamie once more, and together we headed to Meg and Kevin’s home to meet their newest bundle of joy, baby Hailey. In my excitement and admiration for the sweet newborn, I completely forgot to snap a picture of her, but take my word for it: she is utterly adorable, with tiny fingers and toes that melt your heart. On a side note, I couldn’t help but notice the charming flag outside their house – a testament to their delightful taste and welcoming spirit! These quiet moments with friends and their growing families are truly priceless, adding another layer of warmth to my Kansas City visit, highlighting the joy of new beginnings.
A Fairytale Wedding at The Simpson House
The afternoon quickly slipped away, and before we knew it, the clock struck 4 PM – time for a truly special event. We watched our dear friend Kaitlin gracefully walk down the aisle, embarking on a new chapter with John. I honestly have never witnessed two people more deeply in love and perfectly suited for each other. Their connection was palpable, a beautiful testament to true partnership, making everyone in attendance feel the joy and sincerity of their union. The air was thick with emotion, laughter, and hopeful anticipation for their future together, making this Kansas City wedding celebration truly special.
The reception that followed was nothing short of magical, hosted at the historic and utterly picturesque Simpson House, a premier Kansas City wedding venue. “Gorgeous” would be a severe understatement to describe this magnificent estate. Stepping inside, guests are immediately greeted by a grand, sweeping mahogany wooden staircase, an architectural marvel that commands attention and speaks volumes of the venue’s rich history. Elegant chandeliers cascaded from the ceilings, casting a soft, romantic glow, while outside, twinkling lights transformed the grounds into an enchanting wonderland, practically inviting everyone to dance under the stars. The entire setting exuded an air of timeless romance and sophisticated charm, making it an ideal backdrop for such a joyous occasion and unforgettable wedding celebration.
We spent the evening sipping exquisite cocktails, dancing enthusiastically to a fantastic playlist, and engaging in lively conversations that flowed effortlessly. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with my G-Phi ladies, reliving old memories and creating new ones, reaffirming the bonds of our enduring friendship. The camaraderie and shared happiness made the evening truly unforgettable, a perfect celebration of love, friendship, and the vibrant spirit of Kansas City.
My absolute favorite detail of the reception was undoubtedly the unique cake topper: a whimsical pair of Pez dispensers. It was such a “fetch” touch – unexpected, playful, and perfectly reflective of Kaitlin and John’s vibrant personalities and shared sense of humor. This small, personalized element truly stood out amidst the grandeur, adding a memorable and delightful flair to their special day, making it uniquely theirs.
Day Four: Post-Wedding Bliss, Cuddles, and a Secret Speakeasy Adventure
Saturday started a little slow, as expected after a late night of dancing and celebrating. Thankfully, nothing a strong cup of coffee couldn’t fix! With my energy levels slowly rising, I managed to squeeze in a quick photo shoot. This session served a dual purpose: gathering content for my “Foodie Fridays” segment and, more importantly, capturing more adorable moments with Miss Josie. Seriously, I can’t help myself – she’s just irresistibly cute, and every photograph seems to capture a new facet of her burgeoning personality. Her expressions, her tiny gestures – each one is a treasure. These little moments of pure joy and connection with her are truly priceless, making every minute spent in Kansas City worthwhile.
Uncovering Manifesto: Kansas City’s Hidden Speakeasy Gem
After our delightful photo shoot and some cherished cuddle time with Josie, it was time for an evening adventure to Manifesto, Kansas City’s renowned speakeasy-inspired bar. This isn’t just any bar; it’s an exclusive experience that transports you to another era. For those unfamiliar, gaining entry to this secretive establishment requires a bit of an insider connection. You need to obtain their elusive phone number from someone who has already been, and then text them to secure a reservation. My incredibly resourceful mom, always up for a challenge, managed to get the number and texted them on Tuesday, securing our coveted spot. Score! This level of intrigue only heightened our anticipation, making Manifesto a true hidden gem for unique bars in Kansas City.
Before heading inside, my parents, my brother Jordan, and I, like true “nerds,” couldn’t resist striking a pose and taking some photos outside, fully embracing the clandestine vibe. The bar itself is nestled discreetly in an alley behind a hotel, marked only by a small, unassuming golden sign. This understated entrance perfectly sets the stage for the clandestine experience that awaits within, a fascinating aspect of the Kansas City speakeasy scene.
Stepping inside Manifesto was an immersive journey back in time. The pitch-black basement, with its rough stonewalls and antique furnishings, created an immediate sense of intimacy and mystery, as if we had truly stumbled upon a forbidden establishment from the Prohibition era. Illumination was minimal, primarily from the flickering glow of candlelight, which added to the authentic speakeasy ambiance, forcing patrons to truly focus on their company and the exquisitely crafted cocktails. The menu, too, was a work of art, featuring classic and innovative drinks with unique flavor profiles, each a story in itself.
I opted for a lemongrass gin cocktail, a sophisticated concoction that offered an earthy depth balanced by a remarkably smooth finish, with hints of citrus and botanicals dancing on the palate. Each sip was a discovery, a testament to the skill and artistry of the mixologists who clearly poured their passion into every creation. The entire experience felt like uncovering a hidden treasure, a secret shared among a select few. If you ever find yourself in Kansas City and are looking for an unparalleled cocktail experience and a journey into the past, I wholeheartedly recommend seeking out Manifesto. It’s not just a bar; it’s a step into another era, offering an unforgettable night out and truly one of the best things to do in Kansas City.
