As a co-host, these retreats have been an invaluable masterclass in home entertaining. I’ve gained insights into planning and executing events that feel both sophisticated and utterly relaxed. With the holiday season fast approaching, I’m thrilled to share my top Five Hosting Tips for the Holidays with you. These proven strategies are designed to ensure your celebrations are not just successful, but genuinely enjoyable for you, the host, and all your cherished guests. Because at the end of the day, hosting should be a joyful experience, allowing you to savor the moments and the company, rather than being bogged down by stress. Let’s make this holiday season your best entertaining season yet!

#1: Curate Your Guest List Thoughtfully
While it might seem obvious, the foundation of any successful party lies squarely in your guest list. More than just inviting people, it’s about curating a harmonious mix of personalities that will elevate the atmosphere and keep conversations flowing naturally. Think beyond your immediate circle and consider who truly connects, who brings lively humor, who helps others feel at ease, and who can sprinkle in interesting anecdotes. A well-balanced guest list ensures everyone feels engaged and that the energy remains vibrant throughout your gathering.
Avoid inviting individuals who tend to dampen spirits or introduce unnecessary drama. The goal is to create an environment of warmth and joy. A thoughtful mix will spark organic interactions and create lasting memories, making your job as a host much easier. Consider common interests, shared experiences, or even the potential for new friendships to blossom. A diverse group, carefully selected, can lead to the most memorable and dynamic holiday celebrations.
Our recent Palm Springs retreat serves as a perfect example of a fantastically curated lineup of attendees. Each lady brought not only incredible charm but also a wealth of knowledge, fostering an environment where everyone could learn, connect, and grow professionally. The synergy among them was palpable, underscoring the power of intentional guest selection. When you bring together people who genuinely uplift each other, the entire event shines.

Here’s a glimpse at some of the amazing influencers who joined us, each a master in her own culinary niche:
- Liz Della Croce (The Lemon Bowl), celebrated for her authentic Lebanese hummus with toasted pine nuts.
- Lauren from The Curious Plate, renowned for her delectable French dip pinwheels.
- Ansley from The Fit Peach, known for her healthy and delicious lemon baked salmon.
- Christina of Dessert for Two, a wizard with petite treats, including her easy pumpkin bread.
- Jean from What Great Grandma Ate, a go-to for comforting dishes like her Italian sausage soup.
- Jordan of JZ Eats, celebrated for her perfectly crispy baked chicken tenders.
- Lexi of Lexi’s Clean Kitchen, a champion of healthy eating, famous for her meal prep frozen burritos.
- Molly from What Molly Made, who elevates classic sides, notably with her boursin mashed potatoes.
- Sarah of Live Eat Learn, whose creative recipes include the viral marry me butter beans.
- Shelly from Cookies and Cups, a dessert guru known for her incredible copycat Crumbl cookies.
#2: Greet Guests with Ready-to-Serve Cocktails & Appetizers
First impressions matter, especially when hosting. Our golden rule at Fresh Air Retreats is always to welcome guests with a refreshing drink and an enticing snack. This simple gesture immediately makes everyone feel welcomed, relaxed, and sets a festive tone for the entire event. Whether it’s sparkling water, a seasonal coffee, a fine wine, a festive cocktail, or a beautifully arranged charcuterie spread, providing something to sip and nibble upon arrival is key to making your guests feel truly appreciated.
Pre-preparing these items can significantly reduce your stress on the day of the party. Batching cocktails, like a vibrant Pomegranate Spritzer, means less time mixing and more time mingling. Similarly, having a variety of easy-to-grab appetizers ready allows guests to help themselves while you focus on enjoying their company. Think about a mix of savory and sweet, light and more substantial bites to cater to different tastes. Don’t forget non-alcoholic options too – thoughtful touches like these show you care about all your guests.
During our Palm Springs gathering, the wonderful folks at California Walnuts absolutely nailed happy hour. They presented a pre-batched Pomegranate Spritzer, a fantastic tip for any large gathering, allowing for effortless refills. Alongside this delightful mocktail, we indulged in a make-your-own-charcuterie board featuring three distinct spiced walnut recipes crafted by Chef Trimell. The honey-lime walnuts were a personal favorite, offering a perfect blend of sweetness and zest that truly elevated the board.

Walnuts are incredibly versatile, offering endless opportunities to incorporate seasoned varieties into your holiday dishes. Pairing them with your favorite seasonal flavor profiles – think rosemary and sea salt, cinnamon sugar, or a touch of spicy cayenne – is a simple yet effective way to add sophistication and crunch to any holiday charcuterie board, salads, or even as a standalone snack. The visual appeal of a well-stocked appetizer station not only looks inviting but also serves as a conversational focal point, encouraging guests to mingle and enjoy the festive atmosphere you’ve meticulously created.

#3: Design a Flexible and Thoughtful Menu
When planning your holiday feast, flexibility in your menu approach is paramount, largely dictated by your guest list size and the desired ambiance. Whether you’re hosting an intimate gathering or a grand affair, having a clear vision for your meal service will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. The two primary styles – family-style and plated – each offer unique advantages, and understanding when to use each can significantly impact your hosting success.
Family-Style Menu: Perfect for Larger Crowds and Casual Elegance
For larger gatherings, a family-style meal fosters a sense of communal dining and relaxed elegance. This approach encourages interaction as guests pass dishes around the table, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s also incredibly practical for hosts, as much of the preparation can be done in advance, and serving simply involves placing platters on the table. Think hearty, comforting dishes that can hold their temperature well and are easy for guests to portion themselves.
At our retreat, one of our generous sponsors, Albertsons, showcased two fantastic family-style options featuring their Signature Select brand. For breakfast, they offered a delightful meze spread, allowing everyone to create their own DIY protein bowl. I dove right in, starting with savory Garlic & Herb Potatoes, perfectly cooked eggs, convenient Signature Select pre-sliced fruit, and a selection of fresh salsas – a truly scrumptious and personalized start to the day. This customizable approach is excellent for catering to diverse tastes and dietary preferences without extra effort from the host.

Beyond breakfast, Albertsons also presented an “Afternoon Picnic-Me-Up” snack bowl, another brilliant family-style concept. Attendees could easily grab and assemble their personalized snack bowls using Signature Select pre-made Chopped Salads, an assortment of nuts, hummus and crackers, fresh veggies, and to top it all off, delightful seasonal ice cream sandwiches. This not only saved a tremendous amount of time but also allowed everyone to enjoy exactly what they desired. Incorporating convenient, quality products like Signature Select into your holiday menu can be a game-changer for reducing prep time and stress, allowing you to truly enjoy the festivities.

Remember, you can find Signature Select products exclusively at Albertsons Companies’ family of stores, including Safeway, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Jewel-Osco, Acme Markets, Shaws, and Vons. These brands offer a wealth of convenient, high-quality options perfect for holiday entertaining.
Plated-Menu: For Intimate Settings and Elevated Experiences
When your guest list is smaller and you’re aiming for a more intimate, refined dining experience, a plated menu is the ideal choice. This style allows for meticulous presentation and a controlled dining pace, often making the meal feel like a special occasion. While it requires more hands-on service, the ability to create beautifully composed dishes and surprise guests with each course can be incredibly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to truly showcase your culinary prowess or that of a hired chef.
For a truly delightful and intimate breakfast experience, the folks at Happy Egg spoiled us with an exquisite four-course meal, expertly featuring their premium Happy Eggs. We savored classic deviled eggs, a vibrant shakshuka, and a decadent banana pudding – each dish highlighting the rich quality of their ingredients. What makes Happy Egg so special? Their commitment to ethical farming practices is truly commendable. Happy Egg hens enjoy a minimum of 21.8 square feet of outdoor range per bird, equating to a generous 10 acres for every 20,000 birds. This dedication to welfare directly translates into superior quality.

Each Happy Egg boasts a rich, amber yolk – a visual testament to its quality and the distinct difference you can truly taste. Their support for small family farmers is another aspect I deeply admire, as they currently partner with over 103 such farms across the Midwest. To experience this exceptional quality for yourself, make sure to check out their store locator to find Happy Eggs in your local area. Serving such thoughtfully sourced ingredients adds an extra layer of care and sophistication to any plated meal.

Another fantastic opportunity for a plated meal is lunch, and we were truly spoiled by the team at Onions 52. These incredible folks collaborate with farmers to ensure a consistent supply of top-quality onions year-round – 52 weeks a year! Their dedication extends to sustainable farming practices, guaranteeing both the quality and environmental responsibility of every onion they provide. They take immense pride in their products, even developing the remarkable “Smiley” sweet onion, which is virtually tearless. Pretty ingenious, right?

It took over 40 years of meticulous cultivation to bring these naturally tearless onions to market. Smiley onions are specially grown to be exceptionally sweet and mild, transforming any dish into an enjoyable culinary experience without the discomfort of watery eyes. Their unique sweetness intensifies as they mature, making them incredibly versatile and perfect for both raw applications in salads and salsas, or cooked into savory stews and caramelizing for a rich flavor. For our plated lunch, Chef Trimell curated an astonishing, full-onion experience! We feasted on fresh pico de gallo, a delightful flight of tacos, perfectly grilled onions and mixed veggies, and concluded with an unexpectedly delicious sweet onion pudding. This creative menu demonstrated just how diverse and delightful onions, especially Smiley onions, can be when thoughtfully incorporated.

#4: Master the Art of Seating Arrangements
Imagine arriving at a wonderful holiday party, only to find yourself perpetually standing, with no comfortable spot to sit and enjoy your meal or converse. A lack of adequate seating can quickly dampen spirits. As a host, mastering the art of seating arrangements is crucial for ensuring guest comfort and maintaining a smooth flow throughout your event. The goal is to create inviting spaces where people can relax, eat, and engage comfortably at every stage of the party, from casual mingling to formal dining.
If your space allows, creating multiple seating “zones” can be a game-changer. For example, a cozy lounge area for pre-dinner cocktails, a dedicated dining area for the main meal, and perhaps an outdoor patio or quiet nook for post-dinner conversations. These distinct areas encourage guests to move around and interact with different groups, keeping the energy dynamic. Even in smaller homes, clever use of space with convertible furniture, floor cushions, or strategically placed bistro tables can offer varied options.
The flexibility of our Palm Springs retreat venue was truly invaluable in this regard. We had the option to either split tables into smaller, intimate groups or combine them into one long, grand communal table. This adaptability allowed us to effortlessly transition between food display areas and comfortable dining spaces, a feature that significantly enhanced the overall experience. Being able to reconfigure your space to suit different activities and guest numbers is a hallmark of excellent hosting.

Furthermore, even amidst our culinary delights, a significant portion of our time was dedicated to mini business sessions. Our seating arrangement, thoughtfully facilitated by Grocers List (another wonderful sponsor), transformed the living room into a dynamic space where we could comfortably chat about invaluable tools for websites and social media strategies. This highlights that seating isn’t just about dining; it’s about supporting all aspects of your gathering, from casual conversation to more structured activities. Always ensure there are enough comfortable seats for everyone to enjoy their meals and conversations without feeling cramped or overlooked.

#5: Plan Engaging Activities to Spark Joy and Connection
Just like children, adults often thrive with a little direction and a fun activity at a party. While good food and conversation are cornerstones, incorporating a simple, engaging activity can break the ice, prevent lulls, and create memorable shared experiences. It doesn’t need to be elaborate; the goal is to provide a focal point that encourages interaction and lighthearted enjoyment. People generally feel more comfortable and connected when they have a small, fun task to accomplish or a shared experience to participate in.
Consider activities that are easy to join and don’t require extensive commitment. Classic yard games like Jenga or cornhole are always a hit if you have outdoor space. Setting up a DIY s’mores station around a fire pit or even an indoor fondue bar offers an interactive culinary experience. Even something as simple as a curated music playlist or a photo booth with festive props can provide entertainment and prompt conversations. The key is to offer something that caters to various interests and energy levels, allowing guests to participate as much or as little as they like.
Our retreat perfectly illustrated this principle when the local California Date Commission hosted a fascinating date flight taste test. Who knew there were so many distinct varieties of dates, each with its own unique flavor profile? This activity was not only delicious but also educational and highly interactive, sparking curiosity and conversation among our guests. Fun fact: a single date contains the same amount of potassium as four bananas, making it a surprisingly nutritious and sweet treat! This kind of engaging, yet low-pressure, activity adds a unique touch to your holiday party, fostering genuine connection and discovery.

By thoughtfully applying these five hosting tips – from carefully selecting your guests and preparing welcoming refreshments to designing a flexible menu, ensuring comfortable seating, and offering engaging activities – you’ll not only host a memorable holiday gathering but also genuinely enjoy the process yourself. Happy hosting!
