Embracing the Seasons: A Weekend of Culinary Delights, Outdoor Adventures, and Cherished Moments
As the final weekend of July melts away into memory, it’s hard to believe that August 1st is already knocking on our doors. Doesn’t it feel like just yesterday we were celebrating Memorial Day, ushering in the vibrant days of summer? Time, it seems, has a peculiar way of accelerating when we’re enjoying life to its fullest.
While I admit, with a slight pang of bittersweetness, that summer is indeed entering its twilight phase, my anticipation for autumn is already reaching fever pitch. The thought of crisp fall air, the comforting embrace of pumpkin lattes, the exhilarating roar of K-State football games, and those perfectly mild 70-degree days fills me with an almost childlike giddiness. And before we know it, the snow-capped peaks will call, signaling the start of another thrilling ski season. Oh, the joys of seasonal transitions!
But before I get too carried away by visions of falling leaves and fresh powder, let’s rewind and talk about the delightful weekend that just unfolded. It was a tapestry woven with gourmet experiences, invigorating outdoor pursuits, and precious moments spent with loved ones.
Thursday: A Gourmet Grilling Masterclass at Cook Street
Our week kicked off with a truly exceptional event as our firm hosted another one of our highly anticipated cooking classes at the renowned Cook Street School of Culinary Arts. These classes have become a cherished tradition, consistently proving to be a resounding success among colleagues and friends alike. In the past, we’ve explored the intricacies of bistro-style cooking, mastering delicate crepes, perfectly seared steaks, and ethereal mousses. This time, however, the sizzling focus was entirely on the art of grilling.
To our delight, Mr. B found himself in town and was able to join us for this exciting culinary adventure. The moment he walked in, Chef John, with his characteristic enthusiasm, immediately put him to work. His first task? Expertly grilling stalks of fresh romaine lettuce, a surprisingly delicious element that would later elevate our Caesar salad. Witnessing his natural aptitude in the kitchen, it was clear he was a sous chef extraordinaire!
The fruits of our collective labor were nothing short of spectacular. We proudly presented a feast featuring succulent bison burgers, perfectly flaky salmon fillets (a dish from which I gleaned invaluable cooking insights – expect a dedicated Foodie Friday post on this soon!), the aforementioned grilled romaine adorned with a vibrant, freshly made Caesar dressing, and to crown it all, a warm, comforting berry crisp. It was a culinary journey that blended skill-building with sheer indulgence, leaving everyone satiated and inspired.
Friday: Brunch Bliss and Birthday Celebrations
Friday dawned bright and promising. With a day off for me and a relaxed half-day for Mr. B, the question of “what to do?” quickly resolved itself. Brunch! And not just any brunch, but a motorcycle ride to Mona’s, our go-to spot for an unforgettable morning meal. Mona’s holds a special place in our hearts, primarily for their legendary corned beef hash and exquisitely prepared Eggs Benedict. The rich, savory hash paired with perfectly poached eggs and a generous drizzle of hollandaise sauce is pure comfort on a plate.
Now, I might be a little peculiar, but I always request my hollandaise sauce on the side. My rationale? I prefer to add it gradually, ensuring each bite of eggs and English muffin is perfectly coated without making the dish overly “soggy” or overwhelming the delicate flavors. Yes, it might seem a tad eccentric, but it’s a ritual that guarantees optimal enjoyment of every single mouthful. Perhaps a small quirk, but one that makes my brunch experience truly my own.
After a leisurely and thoroughly satisfying brunch, Mr. B headed off to finish his work commitments, while I indulged in a bit of “shooting” – my beloved photography. I spent a productive afternoon capturing vibrant images, brimming with excitement for the recipes I’ll be sharing next week! The evening, however, was reserved for a special celebration. We took a delightful stroll down the street to Ocean Prime, a sophisticated setting perfect for honoring Elizabeth’s birthday. The air buzzed with laughter and good cheer as we clinked glasses filled with sparkling bubbly, offering heartfelt toasts to the birthday girl.
Mindful of an early morning run planned for Saturday, I limited myself to just one perfectly crafted dirty gin martini, savoring its crisp notes. The main course, however, was where the true culinary artistry shone. Mr. B enjoyed a robust, perfectly cooked pork chop, while I delighted in a magnificent piece of salmon, delicate and flaky, complemented by an exquisite ginger sauce. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, a truly heavenly experience.
To cap off the celebration, our table collectively indulged in a monumental portion of Baked Alaska. While it wasn’t dramatically set aflame, its decadent layers of ice cream, cake, and meringue were utterly sublime. We serenaded Elizabeth with “Happy Birthday” before heading home, carrying with us the warmth of friendship and the satisfaction of a truly memorable evening.
Saturday: Endurance Challenge and Relaxed Recovery
Saturday began long before the sun had fully asserted itself. I rose early, fueled by anticipation and a strong cup of coffee, to meet my running partner, Listy. Our mission for the morning: a formidable 13-mile run, effectively a half marathon in training! As we set out, the sky began to paint itself with the most breathtaking hues, offering a glorious sunrise. The clouds, in particular, were stunning, swirling in cotton-candy pinks and oranges against a brightening blue canvas. They were, sadly, the only truly beautiful aspect of our morning expedition.
This run, to put it mildly, was brutal. Every mile felt like an uphill battle, challenging both my physical stamina and mental resolve. The heat was relentless, and despite the early start, the humidity clung to us, making every stride a monumental effort. More detailed reflections on this particularly grueling recap will follow tomorrow, but suffice it to say, we earned every drop of sweat. The feeling of accomplishment upon crossing that invisible finish line, however, was immensely satisfying.
The remainder of the afternoon was dedicated entirely to the fine art of recovery. My trusty couch became my best friend as I drifted in and out of a post-run haze, allowing my body to recuperate. Mr. B, not one to be outdone in the realm of physical exertion, embarked on a long and challenging mountain bike ride, returning home equally “zonked” and ready for some serious relaxation. As evening gently rolled in, the question of dinner arose, and only one answer truly resonated with our exhausted but content spirits:
Pizza, cold beer, and the thrilling spectacle of the #Olympics. Amen to that perfect combination of comfort and entertainment!
Sunday: Leisure, Laughter, and Lasting Flavors
Sunday, bless its relaxed heart, was a day entirely dedicated to leisure. We embraced the spirit of the weekend’s end by pretty much watching the Olympics as if it were our professional obligation. From gymnastics to swimming, we were glued to the screen, cheering on athletes and marveling at their incredible feats. Amidst our Olympic marathon, I did manage to squeeze in a much-needed grocery run, stocking up our pantry for the week ahead, and also took some “head shots” – perhaps for a future project or just for fun.
During my photography session, a few amusing “bloopers” inevitably occurred, reminding me that even the most carefully planned shots can yield unexpected and humorous results. These little moments of imperfection often make for the best memories and a good laugh!
Dinner tonight was a testament to simple, fresh flavors, cooked straight from the grill. We savored tender grilled artichokes, their charred edges perfectly complemented by a creamy, zesty lemon aioli. Alongside, a perfectly grilled steak sizzled to juicy perfection. And as a delightful accompaniment, a fragrant rosemary quinoa – so incredibly delicious that, in my eagerness to enjoy every bite, I completely forgot to capture its beauty with my camera! A true sign of a great meal.
Now, as the final Olympic events wind down for the day, it’s time for a much-anticipated “Olympic break.” The captivating worlds of True Blood and The Newsroom are calling my name, promising another dose of compelling storytelling to round out this wonderfully varied and fulfilling weekend.
Until next time!
