I’m thrilled to be back, ready to share another chapter of this incredible pregnancy journey! If you’re just joining us, you can catch up on the earlier stages of our adventure with my previous recaps: First Trimester Recap and Weeks 14-18 Update. These posts document the early excitements and challenges, setting the stage for what’s to come in the magical world of baby development.

Time, as they say, truly flies when you’re anticipating a major life change. It feels like just yesterday I was marveling at the first signs, and now here we are, well into the second trimester. Writing these pregnancy recaps is incredibly special to me, not just as a way to process this experience, but as a future treasure trove for Baby G. One day, they’ll be able to look back and glimpse what life was like, what their parents were feeling, and how much excitement surrounded their impending arrival. On the flip side, each recap serves as a gentle reminder of how quickly these precious moments are passing, pushing us closer to meeting our little one and embracing the joys of new parenthood.
Join me as we delve into the fifth month of this beautiful journey, covering weeks 19 through 22. This period brought new milestones, a few adjustments, and an ever-deepening connection with our growing baby. From the first butterfly flutters to embarking on nursery preparations, these weeks have been filled with wonder and practical planning. As a bonus, I’ve also included some of my top recommendations for maternity wear and nursery essentials that have made this stage a little more comfortable, stylish, and organized. Let’s get started on this exciting update!
Pregnancy Recap: Weeks 19-22 – Navigating the Second Trimester Milestones
Week 19: Growing Pains, Travel Anxieties, and First Flutters
Baby’s Size: During Week 19, Baby G was approximately the size of a ripe mango. This stage marks significant growth in terms of baby’s organs continuing to develop and mature, with the sensory organs becoming more refined. The baby is growing stronger, and their movements, though still very gentle, are becoming more deliberate as muscles strengthen and coordination improves.
Symptoms & Experiences: This week brought a noticeable increase in breast size – a phenomenon that still surprises me! Just when I thought they couldn’t get any bigger, they did, signaling the body’s continued preparation for breastfeeding. Sleep continued to be a challenge, exacerbated by a temporary move to a queen-sized bed due to ongoing master bedroom renovations. My beloved Snoogle pregnancy pillow, usually my nightly savior, became too cumbersome in the smaller space, leading to a renewed search for a more compact yet equally supportive preggo pillow to ease hip and back discomfort.
The start of Week 19 was particularly memorable as it involved my first “work trip” while pregnant, a journey to Texas. I admit, I felt a mix of nerves. Beyond the usual concerns of keeping up with a demanding schedule, I worried about staying adequately hydrated, managing long days on my feet, and finding suitable rest. There was also an unexpected emotional layer: being away from Mr. B left me feeling surprisingly vulnerable and anxious. It was almost a primal instinct, as if leaving my protector made me feel more exposed in my pregnant state. This surge of emotions was certainly unique, but I navigated the week successfully, thanks to the understanding and supportive colleagues I was with. The only physical consequence? Upon returning home, my ankles had swollen to an alarming size, resembling tree trunks! A clear sign that I needed to elevate my feet and prioritize rest after travel.

Beyond the travel, the absolute highlight of Week 19 arrived during the Mother’s Day weekend: I felt Baby G move for the very first time. It was a subtle, ethereal sensation, almost like a gentle ripple or a ship swaying softly on the ocean. I paused, trying to process what had just happened, a moment of pure wonder. As soon as Mr. B walked in, I excitedly shared the news, “Babe, I think I just felt the baby move!” His reaction was priceless – pure joy and an outpouring of questions about what it felt like. We both paused, marveling at this profound connection, a beautiful reminder of the life unfolding within me. These are the intimate, defining moments that truly make the miracle of pregnancy feel real.
Week 20: The Halfway Mark and Baby’s Healthy Heartbeat
Baby’s Size: By Week 20, Baby G had grown to the approximate size of a banana. At this stage, the baby is developing a protective waxy coating called vernix caseosa, which shields their delicate skin in the amniotic fluid, and tiny, fine hair, lanugo, is starting to cover their body. Their senses are also sharpening, and they can hear muffled sounds from the outside world, making it a great time to start talking or singing to your bump.
Symptoms & Experiences: Physically, I felt a distinct increase in my overall blood volume, making me feel heavier and more “full,” almost as if my body was working overtime to support two lives. My stomach was visibly larger, and the reality of needing full maternity wear was fully upon me – no more squeezing into regular clothes! The elusive search for comfortable sleep continued; finding that perfect sleeping position with a growing bump remains a quest, but I was determined to find a solution that offered true rest.

Emotionally, the beginning of Week 20 was incredibly surreal – HALFWAY there! Reaching the 20-week milestone felt like a significant victory, akin to hitting the halfway point in a marathon. There’s a profound sense of accomplishment and a renewed surge of energy as we look forward to the third trimester. Despite my growing bump, I felt absolutely amazing, energized and ready for what’s next. My commitment to Orange Theory Fitness remained strong, though the rower and Baby G were starting to have some friendly disagreements about available space. Adapting my workouts became essential, focusing on modifications that kept both of us safe and comfortable while maintaining my fitness routine.

This week also included our highly anticipated 20-week prenatal anatomy scan, often referred to as the “big ultrasound.” Since we’ve decided to keep Baby G’s gender a wonderful surprise until birth, the focus was entirely on health and development. It was incredibly reassuring to hear the strong heartbeat, see all the developing organs, and confirm that everything was progressing beautifully. We’re incredibly blessed to have such a healthy pregnancy so far, and this appointment only solidified our peace of mind. Discussions about pediatricians also began, adding another exciting layer of future planning to our journey as we prepare to welcome our little one.
Week 21: Active Baby, Maternity Wardrobe Refresh, and Pediatrician Search
Baby’s Size: Entering Week 21, Baby G was comparable in size to an endive. At this stage, the baby is becoming more active, their digestive system is maturing, and their taste buds are developing. They are also starting to establish sleep-wake cycles, which sometimes, amusingly, align with my own periods of rest or activity! This increased activity signifies stronger muscles and more developed neural pathways.
Symptoms & Experiences: The primary “symptom” this week was my ongoing quest for comfortable sleep. The search for that ideal, smaller pregnancy pillow continued, a seemingly minor detail that makes a huge difference in nightly rest and overall energy levels. Beyond that, I was feeling great, enjoying the evolving sensations of pregnancy and the heightened awareness of Baby G’s presence.
Baby G truly started to embrace their inner acrobat this week! I felt distinct movements, playful jabs, and gentle stretches, especially in the mornings and evenings when I was able to slow down and really tune in. These “baby aerobics” are a constant, joyful reminder of the little life thriving within. Each tiny kick, flutter, or roll reinforces the profound connection we share, making every day feel more special and real.
We also had a follow-up sonogram appointment specifically to get a clearer view of Baby G’s heart. At the previous scan, our little one was curled up too snugly for a complete examination. Thankfully, this follow-up went wonderfully. The doctor confirmed a strong heart and a robust aorta, providing immense relief and joy that all was well. It’s always a special treat to get a new profile picture update of Baby G; seeing those little features developing is simply magical and melts my heart every time. We also learned that our little one officially weighed one pound – another exciting milestone in their healthy development!

With summer just around the corner, I realized my maternity wardrobe needed a serious refresh, particularly for workout clothes and casual dresses. Comfort and style are paramount during pregnancy! I placed a significant order for Gap Body tops, knowing their quality, breathability, and comfort would get me through my summer exercise routines. A new and exciting discovery, however, were the maternity dresses from Pink Blush. I’m usually hesitant about ordering clothes online without trying them on, but these dresses exceeded all expectations. They are incredibly cute, stylish, and fit perfectly, offering both versatility and comfort for the warmer months. I’m genuinely thrilled to be sporting these beautiful dresses all summer long!

Another significant event this week was our first pediatrician interview. These situations are always a bit of a mystery, and this one started with a minor hiccup. It was an open house for a popular practice in our area, and regrettably, I arrived late. I walked in right in the middle of the doctor’s presentation, drawing everyone’s attention – an “oops!” moment that felt like a humorous preview of real parenting, where nothing ever goes perfectly to plan! Despite the awkward entrance, I was very impressed with the practice. They maintain a smaller patient-to-doctor ratio, ensuring more personalized and attentive care. I particularly appreciated their dedicated wing for newborns, designed to minimize exposure to illnesses, a crucial factor for new parents. Overall, I left feeling very good about this practice and the specific doctor we met, feeling confident they would be a great fit for Baby G and our family.

Week 22: Nesting Instincts and a Clearly Visible Baby Bump
Baby’s Size: As we entered Week 22, Baby G had reached the size of a coconut. At this stage, the baby’s eyelids and eyebrows are fully formed, adding more definition to their tiny face, and they are gaining more fat, which will help regulate their body temperature after birth. Their hearing is also becoming more refined, making interactions like talking or singing to your belly even more meaningful, as they are likely to respond to familiar voices.
Symptoms & Experiences: My belly continued its impressive growth, a beautiful visual cue of the life thriving within. While “belly growth” isn’t a traditional symptom, the joy of feeling Baby G’s strong kicks and watching Mr. B lovingly talk to my bump has become a cherished daily ritual, reinforcing our growing family bond. And yes, I would absolutely classify “nesting” as a symptom because the urge to prepare our home for Baby G has officially taken over! From organizing closets to planning the nursery decor, we are absolutely “in it to win it” when it comes to preparations.

The Memorial Day holiday weekend at the start of Week 22 was a whirlwind of activity, and it truly cemented my realization that my pre-pregnancy pace of “900 mph” is no longer sustainable. And that’s perfectly okay. This slowing down feels like essential mental preparation for what’s to come, as once Baby G arrives, we’ll undoubtedly be shifting into an entirely new gear focused on their needs. Embracing this slower pace has been a valuable lesson in patience, self-care, and prioritizing what truly matters.

A memorable moment this week was receiving my first “how far along are you?” question from a stranger at the grocery store. It sounds surprising, but it was the first time I truly registered that my pregnancy was visibly apparent to others, stepping out of my own little bubble. When I recounted the story to Mr. B, he sweetly responded, “Babe, yes, you definitely have a bump, but you look absolutely beautiful with it.” He always knows just what to say to make me feel cherished!
My “hunting and gathering” for the nursery has been in full swing, transforming the excitement into tangible progress. I finally cracked the code on the challenging closet situation – an oddly shaped space with no door that needed a creative solution. My vision is to install an industrial pipe shelf, integrate some stylish coat hooks for tiny outfits, and add a functional bookshelf for all those wonderful children’s stories. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it all comes together beautifully to create a cozy, organized, and inspiring space for Baby G’s arrival.
My Favorite Maternity & Nursery Essentials: Weeks 19-22 Picks
Throughout this journey, certain products have become absolute lifesavers, making pregnancy more comfortable and nursery planning more enjoyable. Here are a few of my top recommendations from this month that have truly stood out:
- Gap Fit Maternity: Memorial Day weekend brought incredible sales, and I wisely invested in some Gap Fit maternity workout clothes. This was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions! Their tops are not only incredibly comfortable, offering excellent stretch and breathability, but also stylish and supportive, perfect for staying active throughout my pregnancy. I stocked up on essentials like this versatile side-tie top, a classic basic V-neck tee, a practical zip-up hoodie, and several long-sleeve shirts, ensuring I’m well-equipped for any workout or casual day.
- Pink Blush Maternity Dresses: As I mentioned earlier, I was initially skeptical about ordering dresses online without trying them on, but Pink Blush completely won me over. Their prices are fantastic, and the quality and fit of their maternity dresses are exceptional. They are super cute, comfortable, and versatile, perfect for both casual wear and dressing up for special occasions. I highly recommend checking out their extensive collection for stylish and affordable pregnancy options that make you feel beautiful.
- Nordstrom Maternity Swimsuit: Finding a maternity swimsuit that offers both style and genuine support can be a significant challenge, especially with a growing bump. My old swimsuit simply didn’t accommodate my changing body, so I purchased a new polka-dot one from Nordstrom. This suit is a dream – it provides excellent bust support, essential for comfort, and perfectly covers the baby bump, making me feel confident and comfortable whether I’m by the pool or enjoying a day at the beach.
- Tokkio_Goods Baby Journal: The decision to keep a baby book for Baby G was something I deliberated over. Many journals I found seemed overly cutesy or impractical, and I worried about finding the time to fill it consistently. However, the Tokkio_Goods Baby Journal caught my eye immediately. It’s simple, clean, and classic in design, handmade with care by a family in California. The fact that it lays flat for easy writing and uses recycled paper were huge selling points. It’s truly gorgeous, and I can’t wait to chronicle all the beautiful memories and milestones for Baby G within its timeless pages, creating a cherished keepsake.
- Baby Gap Camel Moccasins: Believe it or not, finding the perfect pair of baby moccasins proved surprisingly difficult! I had a very specific vision for Baby G’s “coming home from the hospital” outfit, and finding the right footwear was key to completing that adorable ensemble. I almost gave up until I discovered these adorable camel moccasins from Baby Gap. They are incredibly soft, stylish, and exactly the sweet little gems I was looking for to ensure Baby G’s first journey home is both cozy and picture-perfect.
