Reliving Vail’s Top Shelf Harvest

Experience Elevated Tastes at Top Shelf Harvest Vail: A Culinary Journey in the Rockies

Nestled amidst the breathtaking grandeur of the Colorado Rockies, Vail is renowned globally as a premier winter sports destination, drawing enthusiasts to its world-class alpine slopes. However, as the golden hues of autumn paint the mountainsides, Vail transforms into an equally majestic setting, offering a unique charm that captivates visitors. It was in this idyllic fall atmosphere that Mr. B and I embarked on a memorable trip to Vail, Colorado, to partake in the highly anticipated inaugural Top Shelf Harvest event. This boutique culinary and cocktail festival promised an extraordinary celebration of local flavors and spirits, set against a backdrop of crisp autumn breezes and vibrant foliage, making it the perfect prelude to Vail’s bustling winter season.

Vail in the Fall: The Perfect Backdrop for a Premier Culinary Event

While winter undeniably holds a special place in our hearts for Vail, the autumn months unveil a different kind of magic. The air is crisp and invigorating, the aspen trees blaze with a spectrum of yellows, oranges, and reds, and a serene, laid-back atmosphere permeates the valley. This enchanting environment provides an unparalleled canvas for events like Top Shelf Harvest. Positioned strategically just ahead of Vail and Beaver Creek Restaurant Week, Top Shelf Harvest served as an innovative kickoff, designed to spotlight the exceptional culinary talents of Vail and Beaver Creek restaurants, alongside the burgeoning craft distillery scene throughout Colorado. The event’s overarching mission was simple yet enticing: to offer guests an immersive experience of tasting, sipping, and discovering new favorites, all while enjoying a vibrant, speakeasy-themed celebration.

An Exclusive Invitation: Stepping into the Speakeasy

Our journey into the heart of Top Shelf Harvest began at Lionshead Village, where we checked in and received our essential event kit: a commemorative bag filled with tokens. For me, this moment carried an extra layer of excitement, as it marked my first official event attendance as a member of the local media. Receiving that special pass truly felt like a milestone, sparking an undeniable sense of journalistic glee! After a quick rundown of the event’s logistics – green tokens for indulging in exquisite cocktails and spirits, orange tokens for sampling delectable culinary creations, and black tokens to cast our votes for the evening’s standout offerings – we eagerly made our way to the main event tent. The anticipation was palpable, promising an evening of gourmet delights and lively entertainment.

The Ambiance: A Roaring Twenties Revival

Stepping inside the main tent was like entering a vibrant, sophisticated speakeasy from the Prohibition era, but with a modern, luxurious twist. The space buzzed with energy, lined on both sides with an impressive array of vendors showcasing their finest spirits and culinary masterpieces. Dominating the center was a grand, swanky bar, its dazzling lights reflecting off polished surfaces and an magnificent ice sculpture that commanded attention. Throughout the evening, elegant hostesses circulated, offering delightful bites and refreshing cocktails, ensuring every guest felt immersed in the festive atmosphere. The libations flowed freely, as if celebrating a joyful liberation from dry laws, adding to the exuberant mood. The centerpiece ice sculpture, an intricate work of art, perfectly encapsulated the sophisticated yet playful spirit of the event.

A Journey Through Colorado’s Finest Spirits and Cuisine

Our culinary adventure commenced with a visit to the booth of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, a true pioneer in the American single malt movement and one of our absolute favorite bourbons. Crafted exclusively in Denver, Stranahan’s boasts a unique Rocky Mountain heritage. They were masterfully serving up a classic Old Fashioned cocktail – a personal favorite of mine – along with refreshing samples of their peach tea infusion. The depth of flavor in their bourbon, perfectly balanced in the Old Fashioned, set a high bar for the evening’s libations.

Next on our exploration of Colorado distilleries was Breckenridge Distillery. Known for their award-winning bourbons and high-rye whiskies, Breckenridge is another esteemed name in the state’s craft spirits scene. While I typically admire their bourbon, the cocktail they presented at the event struck me as overly sugary with a slight bitter undertone, perhaps a unique experimental blend. Nevertheless, the presentation was impeccable, with a beautiful pink hue that certainly caught the eye, earning them points for aesthetic appeal if not for my personal palate preference on that particular drink.

Indulging in Gourmet Bites from Vail’s Top Restaurants

With our palates awakened by the spirits, our stomachs began to grumble in anticipation of the culinary offerings. Our first food stop was at the table for Tavern-on-the-Square, a highly regarded restaurant within The Arrabelle at Vail Square. They did not disappoint, serving up an exquisitely crafted dish: succulent bacon-wrapped pork belly, perfectly rendered, topped with a delicate quail egg, all nestled over creamy cheddar grits, and finished with a rich drizzle of bourbon syrup. Each bite was a harmonious blend of savory, rich, and slightly sweet flavors, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to sophisticated mountain cuisine.

After thoroughly enjoying the pork belly, we sought out another mountain favorite: Blue Moose Pizza. Renowned for its comforting and flavorful pies, Blue Moose Pizza was offering a gourmet mushroom truffle pizza. The earthy aroma of truffle combined with savory mushrooms on a perfectly baked crust was irresistible. I confess, I may have indulged in more than just a single slice, perhaps even three, showcasing just how exceptionally delicious it was.

To complement the rich flavors we had experienced, we ventured to KJ Wood Distillers, where we sampled their intriguing raspberry-infused white whiskey. This unique spirit offered a delightful contrast, light and fruity, perfect for cleansing the palate. Not far from this vibrant ‘giggle juice’ station, the enticing aroma from the Vail Chophouse booth beckoned. They were serving an impressive veal grostl – a traditional Austrian dish – prepared with crispy new potatoes and crowned with a fresh, aromatic caraway slaw. It was a hearty and flavorful offering, perfectly embodying alpine comfort food with a sophisticated touch.

A particularly memorable stop was at Tavern on the Gore, where the executive chef was personally shucking oysters. Upon approaching, he kindly offered us one. Hesitantly, we recounted our previous unfortunate experience with food poisoning from oysters during a trip to Paris. With a confident smile, he assured us that his oysters were impeccably fresh and would cause no such trouble. He then presented us with an oyster delicately topped with a unique pistachio foam. The verdict? These oysters were absolutely phenomenal, offering a burst of fresh, briny flavor enhanced by the subtle, nutty sweetness of the foam. And, true to his word, there was zero food poisoning – a triumph that solidified Tavern on the Gore’s reputation for quality and culinary artistry in our eyes.

Sweet Endings and Unexpected Pairings

As the evening drew to a close, we continued our exploration, sampling absinthe from Overland Distillery. This intriguing spirit, with its complex herbal notes, was an adventurous choice. To our surprise, it paired remarkably well with a plate of tender, smoky ribs from Moe’s Original BBQ, a local favorite known for its authentic, slow-cooked barbecue. The bold flavors of absinthe somehow complemented the rich, savory ribs in an unexpectedly delightful way – a pairing we wholeheartedly recommend! And, of course, no grand culinary event is complete without a show-stopping dessert. The true pièce de résistance of our sweet escapades was the orange pomegranate cheesecake from Mountain Cupcake. Its vibrant citrus notes and tart pomegranate swirl created a refreshingly exquisite finish to an evening filled with extraordinary tastes.
