Discovering the Heart of Dairy: An Unforgettable Ohio Adventure with American Dairy Association Mideast
“Cleveland, ROCKS!” And for good reason, as I recently discovered on an incredible journey into the heart of Ohio’s dairy industry. A few weeks ago, I had the distinct pleasure of joining a vibrant group of fellow food bloggers (Heather, Megan, Courtney, Taylor, Emily, Jamie, Liz, and Ashley) in Cleveland. Our mission? To gain firsthand insight into the fascinating world of dairy, guided by the wonderful team at the American Dairy Association Mideast.
Over two jam-packed days, we embarked on a legen-DAIRY adventure that took us from the urban charm of Cleveland to the serene landscapes of working dairy farms and bustling cheese factories. We learned the ropes of milking cows, witnessed the intricate process of crafting Swiss cheese, melted hearts feeding adorable newborn calves, and explored the vital role milk plays in fostering America’s healthy breakfast habits. This immersive experience offered a profound appreciation for the dedication behind every glass of milk and every slice of cheese we enjoy. So, prepare for an engaging recap – grab your metaphorical boots, a big glass of milk, or your favorite gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, and let’s relive this educational and utterly delightful dairy journey!
Cleveland’s Charm: A Historic Welcome and Culinary Kick-off
Our unforgettable Ohio dairy exploration began in the vibrant city of Cleveland, with our headquarters nestled in the breathtaking Arcade Hotel. Located in the bustling heart of downtown Cleveland, this architectural masterpiece served as our home for two days. Stepping into the Arcade is like stepping back in time; its stunning Victorian-era design, complete with a magnificent skylight and ornate ironwork, creates an atmosphere of grandeur and historic elegance. It truly is a sight to behold, and I couldn’t help but imagine how perfectly it would host a memorable wedding reception, its beauty making any event feel extraordinary.
After a quick refresh, our first evening led us to the iconic House of Blues for an exquisite wine and cheese pairing experience. We were comfortably seated in a private room, offering a picturesque view of the lively 4th street below from its charming balcony. Each table presented a carefully curated selection of cheeses and wines, poised for our tasting pleasure. A knowledgeable sommelier expertly guided us through the nuances of pairing, explaining the delicate balance of flavors, textures, and aromas that make certain combinations truly sing. It was an enlightening session, deepening our appreciation for both the art of cheesemaking and viticulture. My personal standout pairing was the delightful vegetable yogurt cheese, locally sourced from Sugarcreek, Ohio, perfectly complemented by a crisp and elegant Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay. This initial culinary adventure set a high bar for the delicious experiences awaiting us.
Despite the delightful evening, we didn’t overindulge, as a remarkably early start awaited us the next morning. We were up and out the door by 6 AM, ready to immerse ourselves in the authentic world of dairy farming. The sheer dedication required to rise before the sun, day in and day out, to tend to the animals and the land, immediately instilled in me an immense respect for farmers. It’s a demanding lifestyle, one that truly highlights their unwavering commitment to providing us with fresh, quality dairy products.
From Sunrise to Swiss: A Deep Dive into Dairy Farming and Cheese Making
Our first destination was the historic Richman Farm, lovingly operated by the Indoe family for nearly five generations. This family farm embodies tradition, milking close to 80 head of dairy cattle each day. We arrived just in time for the crucial first milking of the morning. Despite growing up in Kansas, surrounded by agriculture, I had surprisingly never milked a cow by hand! This was my chance, and I was eager to try. Following the farmer’s instructions, I grasped the udder, pulled, and after a humorous six squeezes, a stream of fresh milk finally emerged. It was a clear, if amusing, revelation that perhaps a career in manual milking wasn’t in my future, but the experience offered invaluable insight into the physicality and skill involved in this ancient practice.
As the sun finally rose, casting a golden glow over the tranquil Ohio countryside, we moved on to our next adventure: Pearl Valley Cheese. To call it simply a cheese factory would be an understatement; it’s a veritable mega-land of cheese! This impressive facility is a fourth-generation company, showcasing incredible growth and dedication. From humble beginnings producing just 200 pounds of cheese a day, they have scaled up to an astonishing 20,000 pounds daily, establishing themselves as one of America’s largest producers of authentic Swiss cheese. Our guided tour by David, a true expert, offered an fascinating glimpse into the meticulous process of large-scale cheese production. Of course, the first step was donning our sanitary hairnets – a non-negotiable part of maintaining the highest standards of hygiene in such an operation.
The tour was an intricate dance of science and tradition, demonstrating how fresh milk is transformed into massive wheels of cheese. We observed the vats where milk is curdled, the presses that give the cheese its shape, and the impressive aging rooms where the distinctive holes of Swiss cheese develop. The sheer scale of production was astounding, yet the commitment to quality and heritage was palpable. Afterward, our journey led us directly to their fantastic “cheese gift shop,” a haven for any cheese lover. Here, we happily indulged, selecting various samples to take home. The bacon cheese was an immediate hit – a smoky, savory delight that satisfied our cravings after witnessing such a spectacular operation.
Amish Country Delights and Modern Dairy Innovations
With our cheese cravings more than satisfied, we ventured deeper into the serene landscapes of Amish Country for a truly authentic homemade meal. Being welcomed into an Amish home for dinner is a unique privilege, especially when you’re feeding a lively group of food bloggers! My “inner food enthusiast” danced with sheer joy at the spread laid before us. We savored golden, homemade fried chicken, rich, comforting noodles, savory gravy, and bread that was, without exaggeration, the best I have ever tasted. The meal was a testament to simple, honest ingredients and timeless culinary traditions, a truly heartwarming and delicious experience that showcased the incredible hospitality of the Amish community.
Bidding adieu to the tranquility of Amish Country, our journey continued to a second dairy farm, owned and operated by the Andreas family. This remarkable farm has a rich history, having been continuously family-owned for an impressive seven generations, tracing its roots all the way back to 1881. With over 1300 head of cattle, it’s a vast and meticulously managed operation that demonstrates both tradition and innovation in dairy farming.
Dan and his son, Matt, graciously led us on a comprehensive tour, showcasing the impressive scale and cutting-edge practices employed on their farm. One particularly interesting aspect was the integration of technology: employees carry iPads to maintain accurate, real-time information on each cow, from health records to milking data. This blend of generational wisdom and modern tech highlights the constant evolution of responsible dairy farming. The absolute highlight, however, was getting to meet a baby calf, only 30 minutes old, still wobbly on its legs. Even better, we had the incredible opportunity to bottle-feed one of the young calves! Holding the bottle as the eager calf guzzled down the milk was a truly endearing experience. I certainly felt like a natural, connecting with the newest generation of this vital industry.
Community, Sports, and Nutrition: Dairy’s Broader Impact
After a full day immersed in farm life, we headed back to the city. A quick hose wash to shed the farm dust and a change of clothes later, we were back on the bus, eagerly anticipating our next stop. This time, our destination was the iconic Cleveland Browns’ stadium, where a very special guest awaited us for dinner. The sheer excitement of being inside a professional sports stadium, especially one so deeply woven into Cleveland’s identity, was palpable.
Our special guest was none other than Joe Thomas, the legendary offensive left tackle for the Cleveland Browns. Joe partners with the American Dairy Association to champion the “Fuel Up to Play 60” program. This fantastic initiative is designed to engage students in schools, educating them on the critical importance of good nutrition, including dairy, and incorporating 60 minutes of physical activity into their daily lives. Joe was an absolute gentleman, warmly greeting all of us food bloggers, posing for group photos, and even signing a few footballs. Beyond his professional achievements, his down-to-earth demeanor was truly refreshing. He stayed for dinner, and we all enjoyed a magnificent roasted pig feast, expertly prepared by another famous Clevelander, acclaimed Chef Michael Symon. It was a remarkable evening, highlighting the powerful connection between dairy, sports, and community health.
The following morning, our educational journey continued with a visit to a local grade school for breakfast with a group of bright-eyed children. The American Dairy Association Mideast actively works to educate schools across the state about the profound importance of a well-balanced breakfast to kickstart the day. Research consistently shows that children who consume a nutritious breakfast – ideally one containing around 30 grams of protein – are more likely to exhibit better energy levels, improved focus, and enhanced academic performance throughout their school day. It’s a simple yet incredibly impactful message that the ADA Mideast is dedicated to spreading.
I had the pleasure of sharing breakfast with Niesha, an engaging eight-year-old who joyfully declared her love for blueberry pancakes. She was also eager to demonstrate her impressive spelling skills by correctly spelling “Mississippi.” In a moment of casual conversation, I asked her if she liked LeBron James, to which she simply replied, “Um, no.” Her candid honesty and bright spirit were a delightful reminder of the simple joys and perspectives of childhood, further emphasizing the importance of programs that ensure these young minds are fueled for success.
A Cheesy Farewell: The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Experience
Our legen-DAIRY adventure culminated in a truly epic gastronomic experience at Melt Bar and Grilled. If you’ve never been, I implore you: drop everything and find your way to Cleveland immediately! Melt redefines the concept of a grilled cheese sandwich, elevating it to an art form. Imagine the most decadent, innovative, and utterly satisfying grilled cheese creations you could possibly conceive. We’re talking about masterpieces like the Deep Fried Monte Cristo, the comforting yet luxurious Godfather Lasagna grilled cheese, and the uniquely delicious Potato & Onion Pierogi sandwich. Each bite was a symphony of flavors and textures, proving that grilled cheese can be a gourmet experience. For those with an insatiable appetite and a love for a challenge, Melt even offers the infamous Melt Challenge – a true test of a cheese lover’s devotion. I was well and truly in cheese heaven, and by the end of the meal, I felt like we were all happily rolled out, fully sated and utterly delighted by this cheesy crescendo to our trip.
