There are some destinations that simply call you back, and for us, Telluride, Colorado, is undoubtedly one of them. My partner, Mr. B, and I recently returned from a whirlwind weekend in this stunning mountain town, a place that holds a special spot in our hearts. It had been two years since our last unforgettable adventure here, a trip that felt equally spontaneous and exhilarating. After wrapping up an annual clay shoot on a Thursday afternoon, we decided to embark on a six-hour drive, craving the unique blend of serenity and excitement that only Telluride can offer, eager to spend a few precious days with our cherished friends amidst its majestic peaks. The itinerary was certainly ambitious, culminating in a swift journey to Phoenix for a work event that very Sunday. Crazy? Perhaps, but absolutely worth every moment.
Fast forward two years, and it’s almost surreal to find ourselves reliving a similar, delightfully chaotic scenario. This time, however, our return won’t involve catching another plane immediately. Instead, we’ll be moving into our new home, marking a new chapter in our lives. The synchronicity is remarkable, a testament to how life’s exciting journeys often intertwine. Even though the upcoming week promises to be incredibly busy with the move, I find immense comfort and joy in the fact that we were able to steal away, even for a brief period, to escape the everyday hustle and reconnect with our favorite people in such an extraordinary setting. Telluride, with its unparalleled beauty and vibrant atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for this much-needed reprieve.
Arriving in Telluride: Unpacking the Mountain Village Experience
Our journey began bright and early on Friday morning as we hit the road with our dear friends, the Lehmans. The drive to Telluride, though long, was filled with anticipation, scenic views, and lively conversation. We arrived with ample time to fully immerse ourselves in the first day of our mountain retreat. Upon arrival, Mr. B and Max, eager for some high-altitude adventure, immediately headed out for a challenging mountain bike ride. Meanwhile, the girls settled into our exquisite accommodation, soaking in the views and commencing the delightful task of planning our evening dinner, a cornerstone of any successful friends’ getaway.
This trip introduced us to a new side of Telluride, thanks to our generous friend, Ben, who extended the invitation to the entire group. Ben, who works for an investment property company, secured an incredible spot for us. While we typically prefer the bustling energy of downtown Telluride, this time, we found ourselves in the serene mountain village. Any initial reservations about straying from our usual haunt evaporated the moment we laid eyes on the breathtaking vistas from our residence. The view alone was an instant 11/10 experience, a panoramic masterpiece that made the location utterly irrelevant; the sheer beauty transcended any preference for downtown. It’s truly wonderful to have such a thoughtful and generous friend who can facilitate such an unforgettable stay, showcasing the pinnacle of luxury and natural splendor that Telluride’s mountain village has to offer.
Friday Evening: A Vibrant Reunion and Mexican Feast
As the afternoon transitioned into evening, everyone regrouped, eager to kick off our weekend escape with a relaxed happy hour. The spread was simple yet perfect: an array of fine wines, an assortment of delicious cheeses, and platters of fresh fruit. It was exactly what we needed after a day of travel and initial exploration – a moment to unwind, share stories, and simply enjoy each other’s company. The ambiance was relaxed, the conversation flowed easily, and the initial buzz of the Telluride experience truly began to set in, signaling the start of a fantastic weekend.
Following a delightful happy hour, most of our spirited group ventured downtown to meet up with our friends from Los Angeles. This gathering transformed happy hour into a memorable happy evening, a true testament to the joy of reuniting. We hadn’t had the entire group together in approximately 18 months, making this long-overdue reunion all the more special and cherished. The energy was palpable, a beautiful blend of old friendships and new memories in the making.
Meanwhile, Katie York and I embraced the culinary challenge of preparing dinner for the sizable crowd while the others continued their lively celebrations. Feeding 14 people is certainly no small feat, but we channeled our inner chefs and whipped up a Mexican feast that we believe would have made even the renowned Rick Bayless proud. The menu was designed for communal enjoyment, featuring an array of flavorful tacos with various fillings, complemented by all the traditional accompaniments. Adding to the culinary spectacle, the Westermans contributed a comically large tub of guacamole – a true masterpiece that was incredibly delicious and disappeared remarkably fast! The kitchen buzzed with laughter, good smells, and the satisfying clatter of preparation, setting the stage for a perfect evening of food and friendship in the heart of Telluride.
With tacos assembled, a selection of refreshing beers chilled, and that glorious, oversized tub of guacamole ready for dipping, our Mexican feast was complete. It was a true celebration of flavors, friendship, and the relaxed mountain atmosphere of Telluride, offering a perfect conclusion to our first day.
Saturday: Telluride Adventures – From Burritos to Blue Lake Hikes
Saturday morning dawned with a more leisurely pace, a welcome change after the previous evening’s festivities. We all enjoyed sleeping in a bit before Mr. B took charge of the kitchen, firing up the grill to prepare eggs for our traditional breakfast burritos. For us, a “Wildcat Saturday” simply isn’t complete without some hearty burrito action, a ritual that perfectly fuels us for a day of adventure. These burritos, customized with various fillings, were the ideal start, providing the energy needed for the day’s outdoor pursuits in the magnificent Colorado landscape.
After our late and satisfying brunch, the group naturally split up, each pursuing their preferred afternoon activity in Telluride’s diverse outdoor playground. Some opted for exhilarating mountain biking trails, others chose the serene art of fly fishing in the pristine rivers, while a good number set their sights on a challenging hike. Katie, Listy, Megan, Chance, and I decided to join the L.A. crew for an unforgettable trek up to Blue Lake, a well-known and highly rewarding hiking destination near Telluride.
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a high-altitude hike – a glorious seventy degrees Fahrenheit, with not a single cloud marring the cerulean sky. The conditions were ideal for enjoying the stunning scenery and the crisp mountain air. The hike to Blue Lake typically takes about two hours, and it’s a consistent uphill climb, testing both endurance and spirit. You’d think that with all the running I’d been doing recently, a “little hill” like this would be a breeze, right? Well, I was quickly proven wrong! The sustained incline and higher altitude were a formidable challenge, reminding me that mountain hiking requires a very specific kind of fitness. It was a valuable lesson learned: note to self, incorporate more hill training into my running regimen. Despite the strenuous effort, every step was rewarded with increasingly spectacular views, driving us forward with anticipation for the sapphire gem awaiting us at the summit.
Nevertheless, we pressed on and finally made it to the top. The moment we caught sight of Blue Lake, the effort of the climb instantly melted away. The views were nothing short of breathtaking – a majestic, clear alpine lake, its waters shimmering with an intense sapphire hue, nestled amidst rugged, towering peaks. It was the kind of vista that utterly captivates your mind, distracting you completely from any lingering aches in your throbbing legs and feet. We spent a blissful period relaxing around the lake’s serene “beach” area, soaking in the panoramic beauty, sharing some well-deserved snacks, and simply reveling in the tranquility of this natural masterpiece. After rejuvenating our spirits and bodies, we began our descent, carefully making our way back down the trail, eager to return and catch the evening’s football game.
Saturday Evening: Italian Delights and Victory Cheers
With Katie and I having taken on kitchen duties the previous night, Seth and Nick graciously stepped up to the plate, orchestrating an absolutely massive Italian feast for Saturday evening. Our dining party had grown, now encompassing both our “Denver Village” crew and the L.A. contingent, creating a bustling and joyous atmosphere. While the culinary magic unfolded in the kitchen, the rest of us gathered to watch the Cats (our beloved team) take on North Texas in what promised to be an exciting game.
The football game proved to be a nail-biter, a little too close for comfort for our anxious nerves, but thankfully, our Cats pulled off a hard-fought victory! The cheers erupted, and we all raised our glasses in a triumphant toast to the win. The atmosphere was electric, filled with camaraderie and the joyous spirit of shared success. Following our celebratory toast, the evening truly took off as we delved headfirst into the “giggle juice,” turning the post-game excitement into an evening of laughter, lively conversation, and unforgettable memories amongst friends in our beautiful Telluride abode.
Sunday: Farewell Brunch and Fond Memories
Sunday morning arrived, and it’s fair to say that everyone was moving a little slower than usual, a gentle reminder of the previous evening’s spirited celebrations. The feeling of a two-day hangover was definitely settling in, but the warmth of friendship and the beauty of our surroundings quickly lifted our spirits. Megan and Ben, ever so kind and thoughtful, took on the role of brunch hosts, preparing an incredible spread for everyone. They curated an elaborate egg sandwich bar, boasting every conceivable topping under the sun. From perfectly cooked eggs to sautéed tomatoes, fresh spinach, vibrant green onions, earthy mushrooms, creamy avocadoes, and delicate lox – the options were endless and exquisitely fresh. It was the perfect antidote to any lingering weariness, a truly delicious and restorative meal.
Each sandwich became a personalized stack of deliciousness, built layer by flavorful layer, offering a comforting and satisfying start to our final day in Telluride. The communal aspect of assembling our own creations added an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal, making it a highlight of our culinary experiences.
After our delightful brunch, we took the scenic gondola ride down to downtown Telluride. Our mission was twofold: to find some commemorative t-shirts as souvenirs of our incredible trip and to bid a final fond farewell to our L.A. crew before they headed home. The downtown area, with its charming boutiques and vibrant atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for these last moments. As is often the case when you’re having an incredible time, the hours flew by with astonishing speed. Before we knew it, the call of the road, and the responsibilities of real life, beckoned us once more. It was a bittersweet moment, marking the end of our short but intensely memorable escape.
