Seven Months of Pure Joy: Celebrating Charlie’s Incredible Growth and Milestones
Seven months. Can you believe it? Time truly flies when you’re immersed in the wonderful world of parenthood. This update feels like “lucky number seven” because, honestly, how did we get so incredibly fortunate? Our little Charlie is an absolute joy, a truly amazing baby who brings endless smiles and laughter into our lives every single day. While she’s still our sweet baby, I can’t help but notice how rapidly she’s transitioning from that early infant stage, blossoming into her own unique little person with a distinct personality.
It might sound a little strange to say this at just seven months, but it feels like I blink, and she’s either grown another inch or become even more mobile and active. This past month, in particular, has been my favorite yet. We’ve witnessed so many significant changes – a beautiful mix of exciting new developments and the typical little challenges that come with raising a rapidly growing infant. But through it all, Bret and I constantly find ourselves looking at each other, asking, “How did we get so lucky?” She is captivating, incredibly fun, wonderfully animated, and just utterly addicting! Her vibrant spirit makes every day an adventure. Let’s dive right into all the exciting updates!
Developmental Leaps: Charlie’s Amazing Progress at Seven Months
This month has marked a huge leap forward in Charlie’s development, filled with exciting new milestones that amaze us daily. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch her cognitive and physical abilities expand. We’re seeing more intentional communication and an increasing curiosity about the world around her.
Recognizing Her World: Waving & Understanding
One of the most heartwarming changes is her enhanced responsiveness. Not only is she rolling around with greater agility and purpose, exploring her surroundings with newfound freedom, but she now consistently recognizes her name when called. When we say, “Hi, Charlie,” her eyes light up, and she turns her head, fully engaged. Even more adorably, she has started to wave! Bret and I will wave our hands back and forth, enthusiastically saying, “Hi, Charlie!” She watches our movements with intense focus, a little giggle escaping her lips, then slowly raises her sweet little arm and gently mimics our motion. The pure pride on her face when we exclaim, “Good job, Charlie!” is absolutely priceless. Her immediate smile tells us she’s not just proud of herself, but also delighted by our positive reinforcement. These early social interactions are truly precious and make us feel more connected to her than ever.

Adventures in Solids: Navigating Baby-Led Weaning with Excitement
Our journey with solid foods has certainly become quite the sporty event! We officially started baby-led weaning (BLW) last month, and Charlie has been remarkably receptive and eager to try new flavors and textures. It’s a messy process, as expected, but one that encourages her independence and natural curiosity about food. Instead of purees, we offer her appropriately sized pieces of food, allowing her to explore and self-feed at her own pace. This approach has transformed meal times into interactive, sensory-rich experiences for her.
From Purees to Plates: Exploring New Tastes
I’ve been introducing her to a diverse array of ingredients, aiming for a wide range of nutrients and flavors. So far, she’s tried everything from tender chicken pieces and creamy hummus to smooth avocado, savory tomato sauce, crisp cucumber, sweet potatoes, mild salsa, and even cottage cheese. It’s fascinating to watch her expressions as she encounters each new taste and texture. Right now, her absolute favorites are cottage cheese and tomato sauce – she can’t get enough of them! While she’s enthusiastic about trying foods, I’m still working on establishing a perfectly consistent eating schedule for her, beyond ensuring she always gets a good lunch. Sometimes, she gets a little frustrated with certain foods, like chicken strips, because she’s still mastering the art of chewing and managing different consistencies. It’s all part of the learning curve, and we celebrate every little step forward.
Tools for Tiny Eaters: High Chairs & Helpful Spoons
To help with the self-feeding process, I must highly recommend the NumNum GOOtensil pre-spoons! They have been an immense help in teaching her to guide food to her mouth independently, making the transition to solid foods much smoother and less frustrating for both of us. The other big news on the feeding front is that I finally ordered a real, sturdy high chair, which just arrived! I’m incredibly hopeful that having a dedicated, comfortable, and consistent space for meals will help me be more disciplined with her food training and make mealtimes even more enjoyable and structured.

Teething Triumph: First Pearly Whites Emerge
We absolutely cannot discuss food without celebrating a major dental milestone: teeth! Charlie officially has two adorable front teeth, and they are, without a doubt, the cutest things ever. Their arrival has changed her smile and added a new dimension to her expressions. I have a strong feeling that a few more teeth will be making their appearance very soon because, as Bret’s grandmother would charmingly put it, she has been “spitting teeth.” This old saying perfectly describes the classic signs of teething – increased drooling, chewing on everything in sight, and occasional fussiness as those little pearly whites push through. We’re keeping a supply of teething toys and comforting remedies close by to help her through this next phase.

The World of Baby Sleep: From Suit to Sack & Nap Transitions
Besides feeding, sleep is arguably the hottest topic in our household, as it is for most parents! We are incredibly fortunate because Charlie is generally a fantastic sleeper, consistently sleeping from 7 pm to 6 am almost every single night. Her ability to sleep through the night has been a tremendous blessing for our family.
Sweet Dreams & Sleep Routine
For the past few months, we had been relying on the Merlin Magic SleepSuit, which worked wonders in keeping her snug and preventing her from rolling over too early. However, last week, during a nap, she managed to roll over while wearing it, and that was our cue. It was an immediate “goodbye suit” moment, as safety always comes first. We promptly transitioned her into a sleep sack, and to our pleasant surprise, she’s actually sleeping even better in it! It offers her more freedom of movement while still providing a comforting, secure environment for sleep.
Mastering the Nap Shift: Two Naps & Longer Wake Windows
The other significant hurdle we tackled this month was dropping from three naps down to two. Dear God, this transition felt like trying to beat jet lag after traveling overseas! You know that feeling of desperately trying to stay awake until 8 pm on the night you land in a foreign country just to reset your internal clock? That’s precisely what stretching her wake windows felt like for us. We’ve been diligently working on extending her awake periods for over a week now, and I believe she’s finally starting to settle into the new rhythm of being awake for longer stretches. On the other hand, *I* am still getting used to it! Like, what on earth do I do with her all day during these extended wake windows?! LOL. It’s certainly challenging, but we’re slowly finding new activities and ways to fill the time.

Engaging Play: The Magic of the Jolly Jumper
To help keep Charlie happily distracted and entertained during her longer wake periods, especially as we navigated the nap transition, we invested in the Jolly Jumper. And let me tell you, if you are a parent, or if you know of a soon-to-be parent, you absolutely MUST get a Jolly Jumper! This ingenious device has been a complete game-changer in our household. It provides endless entertainment for the baby, giving them a fantastic outlet for physical activity and strengthening their leg muscles, all while allowing parents to be hands-free for a period. It’s truly a win-win situation. I genuinely believe it’s one of the best $60 you will ever spend on baby gear!

Feeding Journey: Embracing Formula and Freedom
Beyond Breastfeeding: A New Chapter
A common question I receive is, “Are you still nursing?” And the honest answer is, nope! After those adorable little teeth made their grand appearance, I jokingly thought, “Bye Felicia!” But in all seriousness, Charlie had already started to become increasingly disinterested in nursing a little after she turned six months old. It was a gradual and natural progression for her. Now, she is completely formula-fed, receiving about four to five bottles a day, in addition to being offered regular solid foods twice daily. Transitioning away from nursing has been a unique feeling, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. And honestly, it’s so incredibly freeing! The flexibility and predictability that come with formula feeding have been wonderful for both Charlie and me, allowing for easier planning and more shared feeding responsibilities.

A Day in the Life: Charlie’s 7-Month Schedule
One of the most valuable tools for managing a baby’s day and ensuring their needs are met is a consistent schedule. Here’s a peek into what a typical day looks like for our seven-month-old Charlie, keeping in mind that flexibility is key:
- 6:30 am to 7:00 am: Wake and Bottle Feeding. Charlie wakes up bright and ready to start her day with a refreshing bottle.
- 7:00 am to 9:30 am: Independent Play and Activities. This block is filled with engaging activities! She enjoys independent play with her favorite toys, exploring her activity center, interacting playfully with Juniper (our dog), bouncing joyfully in her Jolly Jumper, and even “helping” me make breakfast. If the weather permits, we often spend some time playing outside.
- 9:30 am to 10:30 am: Nap One. Her first nap of the day, a crucial time for recharging.
- 10:30 am: Bottle Feeding. She wakes up from her nap refreshed and ready for another bottle.
- 10:30 am to 11:30 am: Independent Play and Exploration. More time for structured and independent play, engaging with her activity center, or simply exploring her safe environment.
- 11:30 am to 11:45 am: Lunch Time. Our baby-led weaning adventure continues with solids!
- 11:45 am to 1:15 pm: Afternoon Play and Outings. This period includes more playful interactions, often a leisurely walk outdoors to get some fresh air, another session in her Jolly Jumper, and precious moments reading stories together.
- 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm: Nap Two. Her second nap of the day, usually a longer, restorative sleep.
- 3:30 pm: Bottle Feeding. Waking up happy and hungry for her afternoon bottle.
- 3:30 pm to 5:45 pm: Evening Play and Relaxation. We fill this time with more interactive play, sometimes another short walk, or just quiet time together as the day winds down.
- 5:45 pm to 6:00 pm: Dinner Time. Her second solid food meal of the day.
- 6:00 pm to 6:15 pm: Bath. A relaxing bath to cleanse and prepare for bedtime.
- 6:20 pm to 6:45 pm: Bedtime Routine. Changing into her cozy pajamas and her final bottle feeding before bed.
- 7:00 pm: Goodnight! Tucked into bed for a full night’s sleep.

Celebrating Motherhood: My First Mother’s Day
My first Mother’s Day was truly the best. It was such a special occasion, marking a personal milestone in my journey as a mom. I am incredibly grateful that I had professional pictures taken a few weeks prior, specifically to document this precious time with Charlie. Having those beautiful images to look back on made the day even more memorable and filled my heart with happiness. To celebrate, we ventured out of the house for a delightful brunch by the river, enjoying the scenic views and the peaceful atmosphere. Afterwards, we embarked on a quick, invigorating hike at one of our beautiful state parks. The weather was absolutely perfect, adding to the charm of the day. It also pleasantly reminded me how incredibly well Charlie does on the go – she’s a fantastic little traveler! This experience has certainly ignited my excitement, and I can hardly wait to get back to traveling and exploring new places as a family.

Unveiling Personality: A Curious Little Observer
Without a doubt, the best part of this past month has been witnessing Charlie’s curious and unique personality truly come to life. Each day, she reveals more of who she is, and it’s a captivating experience. While my parents were visiting us this past weekend, my mom made a keen observation that perfectly captured Charlie’s emerging character. She noticed how Charlie wasn’t particularly interested in shaking a rattle for the sake of making noise, but rather she was incredibly focused on *how* the rattle was put together – examining its various components, feeling its textures, and trying to understand its mechanism. This attention to detail is remarkable for a baby her age and quite telling. My mom pointed out that Charlie is definitely like her dad in that nature, possessing a deep, analytical curiosity and an interest in understanding how things work. It’s wonderful to see these inherited traits already shining through, adding another layer of wonder to our parenting journey.
