My Top Five Indulge Conference and Portland Highlights

Recap: My Unforgettable Indulgence at the Portland Food Blogging Conference & Culinary Exploration

Last weekend marked an exciting milestone in my culinary journey: a flight to the vibrant city of Portland, Oregon, to attend the first annual Indulge Conference. This groundbreaking event was meticulously organized by the incredibly talented duo, Lauren and Christie, whose vision brought together a community passionate about food and digital storytelling.

It’s somewhat surprising that, despite my strong affinity for the unique blend of hipster culture, innovative micro-breweries, and the majestic mountain scenery that defines the Pacific Northwest, I had never before set foot in Portland. The city’s allure, with its commitment to local produce, artisanal crafts, and a famously laid-back yet creative vibe, felt like a destination I should have explored much sooner. However, as soon as my feet touched down in the “City of Roses,” I understood the magnetic pull. I was instantly captivated by its charm, eager to dive into everything it had to offer.

The Indulge Conference: A Hub for Food Blogging Excellence

The strategic location of the Indulge Conference in downtown Portland, specifically within the bustling area of Pioneer Square, provided an ideal backdrop for a gathering of culinary creatives. More than 100 food bloggers converged at the elegant Hotel Monaco for a two-day event that promised, and absolutely delivered, an enriching and inspiring experience. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was more than just a conference; it was a curated journey designed to elevate our skills, foster connections, and reignite our passion for food blogging.

We were incredibly fortunate to be supported by a wonderful group of sponsors whose generosity added immense value to the conference. Esteemed brands like Harry & David, Tillamook, California Avocados, OXO, and many others, went above and beyond to spoil us. Their contributions ranged from delicious samples and useful kitchen tools to invaluable resources, enhancing both our learning experience and our overall enjoyment.

The conference truly outdid itself with an A-list lineup of panelists, featuring some of the most respected voices in the food blogging world. Visionaries like Kristen, Bev, Heidi, Ali, Amy, Lori, Deborah, and Shawn generously shared their expertise. They covered a comprehensive array of crucial topics, including: maintaining authenticity in a crowded digital space, effectively working with virtual assistants to streamline operations, strategies for monetizing content, building successful relationships with brands, mastering the ever-evolving landscape of social media, and the art of food photography.

Listening to this diverse and experienced group of my peers articulate their insights on how to improve, adapt, and, most importantly, believe in oneself, was profoundly impactful. It was exactly the kind of practical advice and emotional reinforcement I needed to hear. The shared wisdom and encouragement provided a fresh perspective on overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities in the dynamic world of food blogging.

Exploring Portland’s Culinary Delights: My Top Five Favorites

Beyond the enriching conference sessions, Portland itself proved to be a culinary wonderland. As a first-time visitor, I immersed myself in the city’s unique flavors and experiences. I’ve compiled a list of my top five favorite moments, discoveries, and eats from my unforgettable trip to Portland. Get ready for a delicious journey!

1) The Unbeatable Donut Scene: Blue Star Takes the Crown

When it comes to donuts in Portland, there’s a definite (and delicious) divide that sparks passionate debate: are you Team Voodoo Doughnut or Team Blue Star Donuts? Both establishments offer an impressive and often eccentric array of buttermilk-based creations that are undeniably tempting. Voodoo Doughnut, with its quirky designs and cult following, is certainly an iconic Portland experience. However, if I had to choose a champion in this sugary showdown, my heart belongs firmly to Team Blue Star. Their commitment to artisanal quality, using a brioche-style dough and gourmet ingredients, truly sets them apart.

My friend Annalise and I managed to snag the last two donuts they had left at 3 PM on a bustling Saturday afternoon – a testament to their popularity! One was a unique matcha-flavored donut, offering a subtle earthiness perfectly balanced by its sweetness. The other was a rich Mexican chocolate donut, a delightful fusion of spicy and sweet. Both were absolutely stellar, leaving a lasting impression and solidifying Blue Star’s spot as my preferred Portland donut purveyor. The texture, the innovative flavors, and the sheer quality of Blue Star’s offerings made for an unparalleled indulgence.

2) Portland’s Iconic Food Carts: A Global Culinary Hub

I genuinely thought my days of extensive food truck exploration were behind me, especially after my incredible culinary adventures in Japan. Yet, Portland proved me delightfully wrong! I have never encountered such an astonishing concentration and diversity of unique and spectacular “food carts” – as they are known locally, distinguishing them from food trucks because they often remain in fixed locations, forming vibrant culinary pods. These aren’t just mere carts; they’re miniature kitchens dishing out world-class cuisine.

During our Saturday lunch break, a lively group of food bloggers and I ventured to the renowned intersection of 10th and Alder, a true mecca for food cart enthusiasts. The sheer variety was overwhelming in the best possible way: fragrant Thai noodles, sizzling Korean BBQ, comforting grilled cheese, authentic Greek gyros, flavorful tacos, and even exotic Egyptian dishes were among the myriad choices. Deciding where to eat was arguably the hardest part of the entire experience! After a strategic “hot lap” around the block, I settled on the tantalizing Thai noodles. For a mere $7, I received a generously sized box of perfectly cooked, utterly delicious noodles. Adding to the enjoyment, the beautiful weather allowed us all to gather outside in a nearby pavilion, soaking in the sun’s rays while savoring our diverse meals. It was a quintessential Portland experience, embodying the city’s innovative spirit and community-focused approach to dining.

3) Gastronomic Delights: Portland’s Restaurant Scene

Where does one even begin to describe Portland’s incredible restaurant landscape? One thing I quickly realized during my culinary explorations is that it’s nearly impossible to find a truly bad meal here. The city prides itself on fresh, local ingredients and innovative menus. A few locals enthusiastically recommended Lardo, and it did not disappoint. Their carnitas pork sandwich, piled high with tender, slow-cooked pork, paired with their legendary Lardo loaded fries, was nothing short of a savory foodie miracle. It was a symphony of textures and flavors that left me craving more.

For a sweet finale, we indulged in the unique flavors of Ruby Jewel Scoops. Their lavender honey ice cream was a revelation – creamy, fragrant, and perfectly balanced, earning a resounding “two scoops way up!” from me. A truly special dining experience awaited us at Urban Farmer, a treat made possible by conference sponsor Harry and David. Urban Farmer champions a sophisticated farm-to-table philosophy, evidenced in their exquisite fresh local greens and perfectly cooked halibut. The absolute highlight, however, was their whiskey chocolate cake – hands down the best I have ever tasted in my life, a dessert that lingers in memory long after the last bite.

For those seeking quick, yet high-quality pastries and coffee, Pearl Bakery is an absolute must-visit. Their croissant ham sandwich, with its flaky, buttery pastry and savory filling, is a simple pleasure elevated to an art form. And no visit to Portland would be complete without a stop at the iconic Powell’s City of Books. More than just a bookstore, it’s a sprawling literary wonderland where you can easily lose hours. Grabbing a cup of coffee there and finding a quiet spot to people-watch is a quintessential Portland experience, blending intellectual curiosity with casual urban observation.

4) The Invaluable Treasure of Blogging Friendships

In a world that increasingly relies on virtual connections, the opportunity to spend time in person with my fellow blogging peers is something I value beyond measure. Conferences like Indulge provide a rare and precious space to move beyond screens and engage in genuine, face-to-face interactions. It’s incredibly refreshing to be able to “word vomit” ideas, share genuine giggles over common blogging woes, and contemplate new strategies or personal challenges outside the confines of my own head. These informal yet profound conversations are where true breakthroughs often happen, where advice is freely exchanged, and where the often isolating nature of solo entrepreneurship is temporarily dissolved.

I feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded by such a wonderful group of supportive friendships. This “gaggle” of ladies, as I affectionately call them, provides not just professional encouragement but also deep personal understanding. We navigate the highs and lows of the digital landscape together, celebrating successes and offering solace during struggles. Their camaraderie is a lifeline, a source of endless inspiration, and a reminder that even in a competitive field, collaboration and genuine connection can thrive. I honestly don’t know what I would do without these amazing women who uplift, challenge, and inspire me daily.

5) The Evolving Spirit of Community in Food Blogging

One of the most striking observations from my trip was the palpable sense of community that permeates the city of Portland itself. This spirit of collective appreciation and mutual support was vividly demonstrated on Saturday with the annual Starlight Parade. People began lining up as early as 7 AM, hours before the parade commenced, just to reserve a prime curbside seat. If that doesn’t loudly proclaim a city’s deep appreciation for shared experiences and community engagement, I’m not sure what does.

However, perhaps the most significant takeaway from the Indulge Conference, and indeed from witnessing Portland’s own communal ethos, was the understanding that communities, especially in the fast-paced digital world, are constantly changing and growing. Six years ago, the landscape of food blogging was a very different place, marked by different trends, technologies, and gatekeepers. But being an active and thriving part of any community means not only accepting change but actively welcoming new opportunities, fresh perspectives, and new members.

I was genuinely amazed and heartened by the number of fresh faces and emerging talents I encountered at Indulge. This influx of new energy is a powerful testament to the enduring appeal and sustained growth of the food blogging community. It signals a vibrant future, full of innovation and diverse voices, and I am absolutely “digging it.” This willingness to evolve, to embrace both seasoned veterans and enthusiastic newcomers, ensures that the food blogging world remains a dynamic and inspiring space for all who are passionate about sharing their culinary stories.

Until Next Time, Portland!

My first visit to Portland was an overwhelming success, a perfect blend of professional enrichment at the Indulge Conference and delightful personal exploration. From the inspiring insights shared by industry leaders to the unforgettable gastronomic adventures found on every street corner, Portland truly left an indelible mark. I leave with a renewed sense of purpose, a notebook full of ideas, and a deeper appreciation for both the city and my incredible community. It’s safe to say, this won’t be my last time in the City of Roses. Until next time, Portland, you’ve captured my heart, and I’ll be back for more!
