Trip Recap: Biarritz, France – Part One

Biarritz: Where Basque Charm Meets French Atlantic Grandeur

Nestled along the captivating coastline of the Bay of Biscay, just a stone’s throw from the Spanish border, lies Biarritz – a city steeped in centuries of rich history, undeniable elegance, and a unique charm that captivates families and adventurers alike. This French jewel, part of the vibrant Basque Country, offers a multifaceted experience, blending its aristocratic past with a lively, contemporary spirit.

For generations, Biarritz has been the quintessential summer escape for Parisians, including the crème de la crème of French aristocracy. Its allure was famously cemented when Empress Eugénie, the esteemed wife of Napoleon III, fell deeply in love with what was then a humble whaling town. Inspired by its natural beauty, she commissioned the construction of her magnificent summer palace directly on the Grand Plage. Today, this iconic structure lives on as the Hôtel du Palais, a testament to bygone royalty, still exuding opulence with its crystal chandeliers, five-star service, and a palpable sense of historical grandeur. Yet, beyond the glitter and sophistication that define Biarritz, lies a dynamic culture. Here, laid-back surfers ride world-class waves, fine art enthusiasts discover inspiring galleries, food connoisseurs indulge in exquisite culinary creations, and the deep-rooted Basque heritage permeates every aspect of daily life, revealing the true essence of this remarkable city.

Our journey into the heart of this captivating region began with an epic transatlantic voyage, transporting us from the bustling streets of Denver, through the vibrant hubs of Chicago and Paris, finally depositing us in the sun-drenched embrace of Biarritz. Eager to immerse ourselves in the local culture, we wasted no time. A quick refresh, a change into the traditional red and white attire synonymous with regional celebrations, and a shot of “Jet Fuel” – a potent local drink with an intriguing black licorice flavor – set the stage for an unforgettable adventure. Accompanied by my uncle Michael and Mr. B, we ventured deep into the heart of Bayonne, a historic town situated just four miles northwest of Biarritz. Bayonne is not merely a neighboring town; it is the epicenter of France’s largest and most electrifying summer celebration: the Fête de Bayonne.

Fête de Bayonne: A Celebration of Basque Spirit

Imagine stepping into an old-world town where narrow, winding streets and uneven cobblestone roads come alive with a sea of revelers, young and old, all adorned in the iconic red and white. The Fête de Bayonne is an explosion of life, a festival that rages into the early hours of the morning, transforming the picturesque town into a vibrant spectacle. The festivities are a dazzling array of carnival rides that light up the night sky, colorful parades winding through ancient thoroughfares, spectacular fireworks displays, spontaneous street dancing, a mouth-watering selection of street food, captivating live music performances, and for those inclined, the traditional bullfight. Indeed, a bullfight.

Mr. B and I approached the bullfight with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. We are well aware of the controversies surrounding such events, particularly regarding the welfare of the animals involved. However, sitting within the venerable walls of a 100-year-old stadium, observing the passionate crowd, the intricate ceremony, and the undeniable finesse displayed by the bullfighters, offered a unique perspective. It was a powerful reminder that every culture possesses its own distinctive traditions, often deeply rooted in history and local identity. On that particular day, I chose to appreciate the event for its cultural significance and the artistry it represented within its historical context, viewing it as a testament to a centuries-old spectacle.

Once the bullfight concluded, the energy on the streets of Bayonne escalated dramatically. We made our way to the town center to witness firsthand the incredible transformation of a normally quaint burg as its population swelled to an astounding 300,000 festival-goers. The atmosphere was nothing short of electric – a delightful chaos of spontaneous selfies with strangers, daring crowd surfing, more “Jet Fuel” shots chased with Pop Rocks for an added fizz, savory gyros piled high with frites, and a memorable concert where a man, in a truly unforgettable display, played a tuba sans trousers. It was, to say the least, an incredibly vivid and delightfully eccentric introduction to the spirited heart of Basque culture.

Biarritz’s Pristine Beaches: A Coastal Paradise

The morning of day two arrived with a slight haze, a lingering effect of jet lag maintaining a firm grip. The most effective antidote, we quickly discovered, to the potential of nodding off while standing, was to embrace the invigorating sea air and hit the beach. Fortuitously, my uncle’s apartment was centrally located, offering effortless access to Biarritz’s charming shops, delectable restaurants, enticing ice cream stands, and, of course, its renowned beaches.

Biarritz boasts several stunning beaches, each offering its own unique charm, though they tend to be more intimate in scale compared to the expansive coastlines found in places like Florida. The Grand Plage stands as the main beach of Biarritz, a vibrant hub of activity. As previously mentioned, it is majestically overlooked by the iconic Hôtel du Palais. We strolled along the bustling boardwalk, captivated by the eclectic mix of people, eventually stopping to procure a few irresistible ham and fromage sandwiches from a friendly street vendor. Our eyes delighted in the major cuteness of the perfectly striped umbrellas dotting the sand, an iconic symbol of Biarritz, before we settled into our own spot on the beach to soak up the sun and the lively atmosphere.

For those seeking a more tranquil escape from the lively crowds of the Grand Plage, Miramar Beach offers a serene alternative, located just on the other side of the Hôtel du Palais. This picturesque stretch of coastline is renowned for its striking turquoise-blue waters and the dramatic lighthouse perched atop the cliff to the right, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Beachgoers, however, must remain vigilant, as the tides here can come in with surprising speed, dramatically reshaping the shoreline in mere moments, adding an element of dynamic natural beauty to the experience.

An Evening of Coastal Beauty and Fine Dining

Following a delightful and playful day immersed in the refreshing waters of the Bay of Biscay, we returned to the apartment to prepare for the evening’s dinner. Our destination was the home of Palo, a friend of my uncles, whose residence was situated just a few miles south of town. This apartment boasted what was arguably the most stunning coastal view I had ever encountered, a breathtaking vista stretching across the shimmering ocean. Enjoying a convivial aperitif before dinner, I found myself utterly captivated, a profound sense of peace washing over me, making me seriously contemplate the possibility of never leaving this idyllic spot.

Dinner was reserved at Le Sin, an exquisite restaurant nestled within the architectural marvel that is the Cité de l’Océan et du Surf museum. The museum itself is a sight to behold, masterfully designed by the renowned architect Steven Holl to mimic the majestic curve of a giant wave, a fascinating connection to his work on the Bloch Addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City (truly a small world!). We secured an outdoor table, perfectly positioned to witness a spectacular sunset paint the sky with vibrant hues. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we savored glasses of fine Bordeaux red wine, dining on delicate ceviche, succulent monkfish, and, of course, an obligatory and perfectly crafted chocolate éclair, completing a truly memorable culinary experience.

Exploring the Culinary Delights of Biarritz

The following day, I awoke feeling a triumphant victory over jet lag, eager to explore the city’s charming streets. Biarritz, with its modest year-round population of approximately 30,000 residents, undergoes a remarkable transformation during the summer months. This is when the city truly comes alive, as Parisians flock south, bringing with them a vibrant energy and providing local merchants and shop owners with the bulk of their annual income, fueling the city’s bustling summer economy.

Our first culinary destination was the magnificent Grand Halles, a bustling covered market where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the enticing scent of warm pastries. Oh, the Grand Halles! This expansive market is a true feast for the senses, overflowing with an incredible array of fresh seafood glistening on ice, vibrant displays of seasonal produce, prime cuts of meat, artisanal breads, and numerous quaint side restaurants offering delectable bites to savor. I could have easily spent the entire day there, utterly mesmerized, uttering “ooooohhhs” and “aaaaahhs” over every single offering, even finding a peculiar fascination in the more unusual sights like the “cracked-out looking fish heads,” a testament to its authentic charm.

Given the French tradition of not adhering to what Americans consider a traditional hearty breakfast, our mornings typically involved indulging in buttery croissants, reserving our more substantial meals for a leisurely late lunch in the afternoon. It’s a lifestyle one could very easily grow accustomed to. However, for those with an insatiable craving for a stack of fluffy pancakes, a taste of home can be found at Milwaukee Café in Biarritz, a unique spot dedicated to serving up classic flapjacks. I’ll leave you to ponder the origin of its owner, given the name!

Unearthing Biarritz’s Hidden Gems and Artistic Flourishes

With my uncles having spent nearly every summer in Biarritz for the past decade, we were incredibly fortunate to have our own personal, expert tour guides. Their intimate knowledge of the city allowed us to explore virtually every inch of Biarritz, uncovering secret gems that might otherwise remain hidden to the casual visitor. Among these delightful discoveries was a particular cheese shop, the “1001 Cheese Shop,” where the “glace” – a unique local delicacy, perhaps a specialty ice cream or a candied cheese confection – was truly “the real deal,” an unexpected but utterly delightful treat that perfectly encapsulated the city’s surprising culinary diversity.

Our cultural immersion extended beyond culinary delights into the city’s vibrant fine arts scene. We made enriching stops at a captivating Belgian art exhibition, showcasing contemporary European talent. Later, we had the distinct pleasure of attending the opening night of the International Piano Performances at the historic Gare du Midi, which functions as Biarritz’s esteemed Opera House. This evening of world-class music was a highlight, even if the interior of the Opera House, while grand, was somewhat warmer than a “nursing home hot,” leading to a brief, involuntary moment of repose during the performance.

The Basque Culinary Fusion: Pintxos and Midnight Delights

After a day filled with sightseeing, cultural immersion, and that memorable piano performance, it was time to unwind and indulge in the region’s renowned culinary offerings. One of the aspects I absolutely adore about the Basque region is its spectacular blend of French and Spanish gastronomic traditions. This unique fusion is most deliciously exemplified in the ubiquitous pintxos (often referred to as tapas), which are found in abundance everywhere you look. To be able to savor an incredible assortment of these bite-sized delights – from robust chorizo and briny anchovies to creamy cheeses – all perfectly complemented by sips of aged Bordeaux wine, felt like truly living a dream.

However, it wasn’t until a spontaneous stop after midnight at a charming Belgian waffle stand that I truly experienced a moment of pure culinary bliss. There, I discovered golden, freshly-made waffles, generously topped with rich chocolate sauce and billowy Chantilly cream. It was an indulgence so perfect, so utterly delightful, that I was completely and irrevocably smitten. This unexpected late-night treat perfectly capped off an already extraordinary day, leaving an indelible mark on my memory.

This is just the beginning of our Biarritz adventure! There’s so much more to come, including further exploration of its captivating beaches, bustling markets, and an exhilarating scooter adventure. Stay tuned – you won’t want to miss part two of our journey through this enchanting corner of France!
