Ameri-CAN. A powerful whisper, a delicious declaration of possibility, echoed through my kitchen as I meticulously sifted cake flour and measured out creamy buttermilk. It wasn’t just the scent of baking in the air; it was the spirit of a nation, eager to celebrate another year of vibrant history and hopeful future, all encapsulated in these delightful, patriotic doughnuts.
You might think doughnuts don’t talk, and I’d usually agree! But as the aroma filled the room, it felt like these treats were buzzing with a special kind of energy, a joyous anticipation for the upcoming festivities. Perhaps it’s just the excitement of the Fourth of July stirring up my imagination, but there’s a certain magic that happens when you bake with intention, especially for such a significant occasion.
Tomorrow, our beloved country celebrates its 237th birthday. Two hundred thirty-seven years of history, innovation, challenge, and triumph. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the enduring spirit that defines us. While no nation is perfect, and we always strive for progress and betterment, the Fourth of July serves as a beautiful reminder of the ideals we cherish: freedom, unity, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s about coming together, acknowledging our shared journey, and looking forward with optimism.
This year, my family and I are eagerly anticipating our Fourth of July weekend retreat to the breathtaking landscapes of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This marks our fourth annual pilgrimage to the high country with Mr. B’s family, a cherished tradition that allows us to reconnect, unwind, and soak in the natural beauty of the Rockies. While this year might be a slightly more intimate gathering, without all fourteen of us nestled under the vast, star-studded sky, the promise of a grand old time remains as vibrant as ever. The mountain air, the towering pines, and the crisp, clear streams offer the perfect backdrop for creating lasting holiday memories.
Our itinerary is packed with classic Colorado summer activities. I’m especially looking forward to a bit of fly fishing, a serene and meditative pursuit that connects you directly with nature. Early morning runs along winding trails promise invigorating views and a dose of fresh mountain air. For adventure seekers, jeep trailing offers an exhilarating way to explore rugged terrain and discover hidden gems in the backcountry. And of course, no Fourth of July celebration would be complete without some serious barbecuing – the smoky aroma of grilled delights filling the air, perfectly paired with laughter and good company. And let’s not forget the crucial element of “marg-thirtyin’,” a playful nod to enjoying refreshing margaritas as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with fiery hues. It’s these simple, yet profound, moments that truly encapsulate the spirit of a summer holiday.
Two years ago, I crafted a batch of patriotic cupcakes that were an instant hit with my nieces and nephews, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. This year, however, I decided it was time to shake things up and introduce a new star to our holiday dessert table: homemade doughnuts. But not just any doughnuts, my friends. Oh, no. These are special. These are baked doughnuts, wonderfully light and tender, adorned with a truly extraordinary marshmallow frosting. If you’ve never experienced the magic of homemade marshmallow frosting, you are in for an absolute revelation. The recipe, admittedly, has a slightly unique step involving heating corn syrup to a boil in the microwave before slowly drizzling it into fluffy egg whites. This seemingly unconventional technique is the secret to its unparalleled texture and taste. The result is a glossy, remarkably airy, and exquisitely sugary whipped frosting that tastes quite simply like a bite of heaven.
Once your heavenly marshmallow frosting is prepared, the real fun begins. Divide the luscious frosting into three separate bowls. One bowl remains pure, pristine white, ready to serve as the perfect base. The other two bowls will be transformed into vibrant red and striking blue, echoing the iconic “Ameri-CAN” colors of our flag. This creative stage is where your inner artist can truly shine. With the colors ready, you can start decorating your baked doughnuts, turning them into miniature canvases of patriotism. Imagine spreading the soft white frosting generously over each doughnut, creating a cloud-like foundation. Then, using a piping bag, artfully apply bold red stripes, reminiscent of the flag’s bars, and cheerful blue dots, like the scattered stars of the Union. These visually stunning and irresistibly delicious treats are guaranteed to be a sensational hit, not just with the little ones but especially with the adults who will appreciate both the effort and the exquisite taste.
As you prepare to share these delightful creations, remember to savor the moment. Blow out your candles, perhaps not literally on a doughnut, but in the spirit of celebration, hope, and gratitude for another year. These Red, White, and Blue Marshmallow Frosted Baked Doughnuts are more than just a dessert; they are a symbol of festive joy, shared traditions, and the sweet taste of freedom. They are a delicious way to bring people together, to celebrate community, and to add an extra layer of sweetness to our national holiday. They embody the very essence of homemade goodness and patriotic pride.
Happy Birthday, America! May your celebrations be filled with joy, delicious food, and wonderful company.

Baked Doughnuts with Red, White, & Blue Marshmallow Frosting
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 7 minutes
Ingredients:
For the Doughnuts:
2 cups cake flour, sifted (sifting ensures a light and airy texture)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder (for perfect rise)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (adds a classic, warm doughnut flavor)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 cup buttermilk (for tenderness and moisture)
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (and slightly cooled)
For the Marshmallow Frosting:
2 large egg whites (ensure they are at room temperature for best results)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Red food coloring (gel or liquid)
Blue food coloring (gel or liquid)
Directions:
For the Doughnuts:
1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius). This high temperature helps the doughnuts rise quickly and achieve a lovely golden crust. Lightly spray a 12-cup doughnut pan with nonstick cooking spray, ensuring every crevice is coated to prevent sticking.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sifted cake flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground nutmeg, and kosher salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly to ensure even distribution, which is key for a consistent bake.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter until well combined. Gradually add these wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just incorporated. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are perfectly fine and help keep the doughnuts tender.
4. Carefully spoon or pipe the batter into each doughnut cup, filling them approximately 2/3 full. This allows room for them to rise without overflowing. Bake for 6-8 minutes, or until the doughnuts are golden brown and spring back when lightly touched. Let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Marshmallow Frosting:
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the 2 egg whites with the salt on medium speed until they become frothy. Gradually increase the speed and slowly add the 1/4 cup granulated sugar, continuing to beat until soft, glossy peaks form. The egg whites should hold their shape but still be soft.
2. While the egg whites are beating, heat the 3/4 cup corn syrup in a glass microwaveable dish until it comes to a rolling boil. This typically takes 1-2 minutes on high power, but watch it carefully to prevent boiling over. The hot syrup is crucial for stabilizing the egg whites and creating the marshmallow texture.
3. With the mixer running on high speed, carefully and slowly pour the hot, boiling corn syrup in a thin, steady stream over the egg white mixture. Continue beating on high speed until the mixture is very thick, glossy, and holds firm, hard peaks. This process usually takes about 5-7 minutes. The bowl will feel warm at first but will cool as it beats. Finally, beat in the vanilla extract until fully combined and the frosting is incredibly glossy and voluminous.
To Assemble and Decorate:
1. Divide the prepared marshmallow frosting into three separate bowls. Leave one bowl of frosting white. Tint the second bowl with red food coloring until you achieve your desired vibrant red shade, and tint the third bowl with blue food coloring to create a beautiful patriotic blue.
2. Spread the white frosting generously and smoothly all over the top of each cooled doughnut, creating a pristine base. Allow this layer to set slightly.
3. Next, transfer the red frosting to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip (or simply snip a tiny corner off a Ziploc bag). Pipe three distinct lines across each doughnut, mimicking the stripes of the American flag. For best results and to help the frosting set, place the decorated doughnuts in the refrigerator for about 5-10 minutes.
4. After the red frosting has set, take the doughnuts out of the fridge. Fill a new piping bag with the blue frosting and pipe small, celebratory blue dots wherever your heart desires on the white frosted areas, completing your festive, flag-inspired design. Once the dots are complete, return the doughnuts to the fridge for another 5-10 minutes to allow the blue frosting to set fully. Once set, these stunning and delicious patriotic treats are ready to be enjoyed!
