Joyful New Year

An Epic New Year’s Eve in Vail: From Zany Costumes to Icy Slopes

The transition from one year to the next is always a special occasion, often marked by grand celebrations, personal reflections, and the promise of new beginnings. For many years, our New Year’s Eve tradition has revolved around an eagerly anticipated annual bash hosted by our wonderful friends, Nick and Tom, in the picturesque mountain town of Vail, Colorado. Their parties are legendary, renowned for their imaginative themes that challenge guests to unleash their creativity. Each year, revelers eagerly await the announcement of the theme, knowing it promises an evening of laughter, memorable costumes, and unparalleled festive spirit in one of America’s most beloved ski destinations. Vail, with its charming village, world-class slopes, and vibrant atmosphere, truly comes alive during the holiday season, offering the perfect backdrop for such unique celebrations.

Past themes have spanned the spectrum from intellectually playful to hilariously personal, showcasing the hosts’ incredible imagination and the guests’ willingness to participate fully. One year, we delved into a “begins and ends with” concept, a delightful nod to wordplay where guests crafted costumes around figures whose names followed this rule. I recall the brilliant absurdity of someone embodying “George Michael Phelps,” a truly inspired choice that sparked conversation all night about clever word associations. Last year’s theme, “party like its your birthday,” encouraged guests to dress as a celebrity born on their exact birthday. I had a fantastic time channeling my inner Sally Jesse Raphael, complete with signature red glasses and a confidently inquisitive demeanor, much to the amusement of fellow partygoers. These themes aren’t just about dressing up; they’re about fostering an atmosphere of fun, community, and shared experience that truly sets Nick and Tom’s New Year’s Eve celebration apart as a highlight of the Colorado winter calendar.

This Year’s Creative Challenge: The “Anything But Clothes” Extravaganza

For the most recent New Year’s Eve, the theme announced was a truly open-ended, brilliantly unconventional challenge: “ABC – Anything But Clothes.” This theme, while seemingly simple, presented a fantastic opportunity for ingenuity, forcing guests to think far outside the traditional costume box. The holiday season, particularly December, had been a whirlwind of activity, leaving my partner and me with little time to strategically plan our attire. Consequently, our costumes became a complete afterthought, a last-minute scramble to piece something together that would fit the bill while also offering some comfort against the biting Vail winter air.

Our spontaneous solution? Wetsuits. We reasoned that with outdoor temperatures plummeting to a brisk -10°F (-23°C) that evening, the neoprene material would provide excellent insulation, keeping us toasty both inside and outside. What we failed to account for, however, was the reality of the indoor environment: a roaring fireplace casting a warm glow, the significant body heat generated by dozens of enthusiastic partygoers, and the sheer energy of the celebration. The result, to our comedic dismay, was an evening spent in a sauna-like state. We were, to put it mildly, exceptionally sweaty. Despite the unexpected discomfort, our wetsuits certainly fulfilled the “Anything But Clothes” mandate, adding a layer of humor to our night and sparking many amused comments and shared laughs from friends who understood our last-minute predicament. It was a testament to the fun, carefree spirit of the Vail New Year’s Eve party.

The creativity on display throughout the evening was truly astounding, proving that the “Anything But Clothes” theme brought out the best in everyone’s imagination. Guests pushed the boundaries of what could be considered “clothing,” transforming everyday objects into wearable art and humorous ensembles. Tom, one of our gracious hosts, embodied liberty itself, impressively dressed as the Statue of Liberty, complete with a flowing robe crafted from green fabric and a meticulously fashioned torch and crown. His costume was instantly recognizable and drew many appreciative smiles. Nick, the other half of our hosting duo, looked like a walking, talking festive Christmas tree, adorned with shimmering tinsel, colorful ornaments, and twinkling battery-operated lights that brought a magical touch of holiday cheer to the party. And then there was Ryan, whose costume was a true head-scratcher but undeniably brilliant and memorable. He was somehow wrapped and presented in a way that made him look uncannily like the iconic Pringles mascot – tall, cylindrical, and utterly distinctive with his signature mustache. His ensemble drew many curious glances and comments, with everyone agreeing he was ready for a commercial spot, perfectly capturing the playful essence of the ABC party.

However, the undisputed champion of the night, taking home the coveted prize for best costume, was our incredible friend Rachael. Her creation was nothing short of brilliant: she meticulously sewed an entire dress out of bubble wrap. The dress shimmered and popped with every movement, creating a truly ingenious and whimsical interpretation of the “Anything But Clothes” theme. It was a masterpiece of upcycling and creative design, proving that imagination is truly the only limit when it comes to unique party ideas. Her outfit was a constant source of admiration and smiles throughout the night, perfectly encapsulating the playful, inventive spirit of the evening and highlighting the extraordinary talent among our friends in Vail.

As the clock neared midnight, the energy in the room surged with anticipation. With a couple of refreshing jack and gingers in hand, we joined the collective countdown, culminating in a joyful cheer and a memorable kiss at the stroke of twelve. It was a perfect New Year’s moment, surrounded by good friends, fantastic music, and an atmosphere buzzing with positive energy and hope for the year ahead. Despite the tempting allure of continuing the festivities well into the early hours, the thought of fresh powder and a day on the slopes loomed. Knowing we had some serious skiing planned for the following morning, I made the sensible decision to call it an early night, prioritizing rest for the exhilarating adventures ahead on the magnificent Colorado slopes. After all, a winter vacation in Colorado isn’t complete without hitting the ski resorts.

Braving the Elements: A Frigid Ski Day at Beaver Creek Resort

The morning after a lively New Year’s Eve celebration often begins with a slower pace, and ours was no exception. Despite our best intentions and an early exit from the party, the collective enthusiasm to hit the slopes was slightly dulled by a touch of post-celebration sluggishness. Consequently, we didn’t make it to Beaver Creek, one of Colorado’s premier ski resorts, until almost noon. Beaver Creek offers a truly luxurious ski experience, known for its pristine groomed runs, world-class amenities, and stunning alpine scenery, making it a dream destination for any ski enthusiast seeking a refined winter escape in the Rockies.

However, what truly defined our ski day was the relentless cold. Oh, did I mention that the high for the day barely scraped 5°F (-15°C)? This wasn’t just cold; it was truly brutal. The air bit at any exposed skin, and layers, despite being numerous and carefully chosen, felt barely adequate against the biting windchill that seemed to penetrate to the bone. As we ascended the mountain, conditions only intensified. At the summit, the thermometer dipped even further, reaching a staggering -10°F (-23.3°C). Skiing in such extreme cold is a unique challenge: goggles fog, fingers and toes numb quickly despite warmers, and every breath feels like an icy gasp, turning the inside of your nose into tiny icicles. Despite the breathtaking beauty of the snow-covered peaks shimmering under the crisp winter sun, the harsh reality of the frigid temperatures became undeniable, reminding us of the raw power of nature in the Colorado mountains.

We are seasoned skiers, accustomed to cold weather and familiar with the challenges of mountain resort conditions, but this was a different league entirely. The cold was so intense that after just a couple of exhilarating but bone-chilling runs, we collectively decided to call it quits around 3 PM. The sheer joy of carving through fresh powder, while initially invigorating, was beginning to be overshadowed by the profound physical discomfort and the concern for frostbite. Safety and warmth became our top priorities. It was a pragmatic decision, acknowledging that even the most dedicated ski enthusiasts have their limits when facing such extreme conditions on the majestic slopes of the Colorado Rockies, even at a world-class destination like Beaver Creek.

Après-Ski Comfort and the Lingering Effects of Winter Festivities

Seeking immediate respite from the pervasive cold, we made a beeline for Patty’s Bar and Grill in Avon. This cozy establishment offered precisely what we needed: a warm, inviting atmosphere and the promise of comforting food and drink. There’s nothing quite like the ritual of après-ski, especially after a challenging day on the mountain. The transition from the biting outdoor air to the warmth of a bustling bar, shedding layers and warming numb fingers around a hot drink, is a quintessential part of any winter ski trip and a true highlight of Colorado holidays.

And what better way to warm up than with a truly delicious burger? Patty’s did not disappoint. Paired with a well-deserved recovery beer, it hit all the right notes, offering both sustenance and a satisfying sense of warmth spreading from within. The savory, hot food was a perfect antidote to the cold, and the convivial atmosphere of Patty’s, filled with other skiers sharing their tales from the slopes, provided the ideal setting to unwind and thaw out. It was a moment of pure comfort and camaraderie, a welcome contrast to the icy challenges we had faced just hours before on the slopes of Beaver Creek.

Despite the delicious meal and the relaxing ambiance, the evening ended for me with another early night. I’m at an age where epic all-night parties are more of a fond memory than a current pursuit, and honestly, this persistent chest cold I’d been battling wasn’t helping my energy levels. It felt like a constant drain, making even moderate exertion feel like a monumental task. The combination of intense New Year’s revelry and extreme cold exposure had definitely taken its toll. My partner, Mr. B, and I were officially “partied out” and completely ready for a break from the holiday intensity. While the memories from our Vail New Year’s celebration and Beaver Creek ski trip are truly cherished, we were both definitely looking forward to the comforting predictability of a normal week, eager to recharge and shake off the lingering remnants of the cold.

We hope that wherever you were and whatever you did, you all had a truly great New Year! May it be filled with health, happiness, and adventures, perhaps slightly less sweaty or freezing than ours, but just as memorable!
