The quiet of the afternoon often brings a certain calm, but today it was tinged with the familiar bittersweetness of farewells. Mr. B and I just waved goodbye to my parents, leaving a noticeable void that only their vibrant presence can fill. It’s a feeling I’ve known since childhood, a tiny pang that always accompanies goodbyes, even after a simple sleepover at a friend’s house. Perhaps it’s just the homebody in me, or maybe it’s the universal longing for family connection that makes these partings so poignant.
Embracing the Mile High City: A Cherished Family Getaway in Denver
Denver, fondly known as the “Mile High City,” holds a special place in our hearts, not least because it’s where we’ve built our life. This visit was markedly different from their last trip, which took place in the biting heart of winter. Back then, we celebrated my dad’s milestone 50th birthday, squeezing a grand feast into our cozy one-bedroom apartment. Our itinerary was packed with cultural excursions to the Denver Art Museum, laughter-filled comedy shows, and memorable dinners at some of the city’s finest restaurants. It was a wonderful visit, but the chill of winter often kept us indoors.
A Heartfelt Reunion: Welcoming Family to Our Denver Home
Fast forward a couple of years, and our lives, and indeed our living situation, have wonderfully expanded. Since moving into our new two-bedroom home, the prospect of hosting my parents overnight became a reality – a definite upgrade that allowed for a more relaxed and immersive family experience. This time, instead of navigating hotel logistics, they could truly settle in with us. Our weekend unfolded with a perfect blend of high-country hikes, leisurely neighborhood strolls, delicious brunches, and comforting home-cooked dinners. After what felt like several weeks of non-stop activity, this tranquil weekend with loved ones was precisely what we needed, offering a much-welcomed respite and a chance to simply be together.
Saturday: Urban Adventures and Homemade Comforts
My parents arrived on a Saturday afternoon, and initially, the weather presented a classic Colorado paradox: cold and rainy. However, anyone familiar with the Centennial State knows its famous weather slogan: “Wait 20 minutes.” True to form, before we knew it, the persistent clouds began to part, revealing patches of brilliant blue sky and the warm embrace of the sun. It was a gentle reminder that even on a cloudy day, Denver’s charm shines through, promising brighter moments just around the corner. This unpredictable beauty only added to the unique character of their visit, showcasing Denver’s dynamic personality.
Given the “freaking freezing” conditions of their last winter visit, the opportunity to walk around and explore our favorite local parks and neighborhoods was a particular delight. The crisp autumn air, invigorated by the recent rain, made our strolls incredibly refreshing. It was heartwarming to see my Dad, an avid follower of my blog, recognize several spots from previous posts. “Hey, I know that bridge!” he exclaimed, pointing towards a familiar landmark. “There’s the Denver Beer Company. Is this the path where you take all of your running feet pictures?” His keen observations and genuine interest in our daily lives truly highlighted the special bond we share. Parents, you’ve just got to love their endearing ways and how they connect with even the smallest details of your world, making every moment feel cherished and recognized.
After our invigorating walk, my Mom and I embarked on a culinary mission, heading to the grocery store to gather ingredients for a delicious home-cooked dinner. We envisioned something light, fresh, and bursting with flavor. Our chosen menu reflected this desire for wholesome indulgence: succulent sautéed chicken breasts infused with earthy mushrooms and aromatic thyme, perfectly roasted golden potatoes, and a vibrant garden salad dressed with a zesty Dijon vinaigrette. The evening was completed with plenty of rich red wine, flowing freely alongside lively conversations and shared laughter, creating a warm and memorable start to their visit.
Sunday: Mountain Majesty and Movie Magic
Sunday morning began with a leisurely pace as we ambled over to Duo, one of our absolute favorite brunch spots in Denver. I knew my Mom, with her appreciation for quality and locality, would instantly fall in love with its commitment to serving local, organic food. The ambiance was inviting, and the menu, a testament to fresh, seasonal ingredients. I opted for my usual, a heavenly combination of crispy golden potatoes, perfectly sautéed kale, and two exquisitely poached eggs crowned with a creamy mustard sauce. It was, as always, pure culinary bliss. True to my prediction, my parents, or “the parental units” as I affectionately call them, gave Duo a resounding “two forks up,” a testament to their delightful experience.
Once brunch concluded, we eagerly hopped into the car, setting our sights west towards the majestic high country for an invigorating hiking adventure. Our mission was to explore the intriguing old mining ghost towns nestled near Idaho Springs, a charming historic area located just about 20 minutes west of Denver. We yearned to breathe in the crisp, clean pine air that only the higher elevations can offer. Thankfully, the weather gods were on our side; apart from a pleasant, gentle breeze, we couldn’t have wished for a more picturesque day to immerse ourselves in Colorado’s stunning natural beauty. The scenic drive alone, winding through impressive mountain landscapes, was a treat in itself, building anticipation for the exploration ahead.
We embarked on a captivating hike along an old mining trail, the path winding through historical relics and breathtaking scenery. To our delight, we even stumbled upon patches of snow, remnants of an early dusting that hinted at the approaching winter. It was a playful surprise, transforming our autumn hike into a multi-seasonal experience. For those eagerly awaiting the slopes, it was a clear signal: ski season is fast approaching, folks! The unique blend of fall colors and scattered snow added an extra layer of magic to our mountain excursion, creating truly unforgettable family memories.
After several hours spent at the invigorating high elevation, we decided to make our way back to Denver, seeking slightly warmer temperatures and a comforting dinner. Since my parents, being from a lower altitude, aren’t accustomed to the thin mountain air, we ensured they had ample time to relax and recharge while Mr. B and I took care of dinner preparations. A quick trip to the grocery store yielded a couple of choice steaks for grilling and fresh Brussels sprouts, destined to become my famously delicious hash. And, of course, you can never go wrong with a side of warm, garlic bread – a truly easy and satisfying meal to cap off an adventurous day.
As we savored our hearty dinner, we settled in to watch a timeless classic: Young Frankenstein, starring the incomparable Gene Wilder. This movie holds a special place in our family’s history; it was our go-to comfort film when we were kids, always guaranteed to bring laughter, even when feeling under the weather. And let me tell you, its humor has certainly stood the test of time! You simply can’t beat the iconic scene where Gene Wilder tap dances with the monster, delivering the unforgettable line, “Putting on the ritz.” It’s a moment of pure comedic genius, a cherished piece of cinematic history that still brings smiles and hearty laughs, connecting generations through shared enjoyment.
Monday: Memorable Farewells and Unexpected Treasures
On Monday, with Mr. B off to work, I decided to treat my parents to another delightful brunch, this time at Mona’s. It seems I’m successfully converting them to the joys of the brunch culture, one delicious meal at a time! Mona’s, with its charming ambiance and delectable menu, provided the perfect setting for a relaxed morning before their afternoon flight. It’s these simple, shared moments around a table that often become the most treasured memories of family visits.
On our way back from brunch, an unexpected and wonderfully characteristic event unfolded. My Mom, who is a passionate vendor at Good JuJu in Kansas City – a treasure trove of unique finds – suddenly stopped in front of a turn-of-the-century house that the city was in the process of demolishing. I kid you not, she literally flagged down the excavator operator, asking him to pause his work so she could rescue a couple of antique bricks! Her intention? To provide me with authentic, rustic backdrops for my food photo shoots. Aren’t Moms truly the best? Her enthusiasm and thoughtfulness, even in the face of a bulldozing house, perfectly capture her loving and resourceful spirit, making for an unforgettable anecdote.
With only a few precious hours remaining before their flight, I drove them over to the charming Highlands neighborhood, renowned for its boutique shops and vibrant atmosphere, for a little last-minute shopping. It was a relaxed and enjoyable excursion, allowing us to browse and discover unique items. We managed to find a few adorable gifts for Josie and Kitty, and my Mom even scored a super cute purse, adding a lovely final touch to her Denver souvenir collection. These small joys of finding something special together created a lighthearted end to our visit, ensuring every moment was filled with connection.
And just like that, the clock had run its course, signaling that it was time to make our way to the airport. The brevity of their visit, though always too short, only amplifies the sweetness of the time we shared. The quiet drive to the airport was filled with lingering smiles and shared memories, a silent acknowledgment of the joy of their presence.
Cherished Moments and Lasting Memories in Denver
Mr. B and I truly had a fantastic time exploring Denver with my parents over these past two wonderful days. Despite the fleeting nature of their stay, it was an immense pleasure and privilege to play host to two people who have given us immeasurably much throughout our lives. From the urban charm of Denver’s neighborhoods to the serene majesty of the Colorado high country, every moment was infused with the warmth of family. We cherished the opportunity to create new memories, revisit old favorites, and simply revel in each other’s company. These are the moments that truly enrich our lives and remind us of the enduring power of family bonds.
Love you Mom and Dad! The Mile High City, and our home within it, eagerly awaits your next visit. Please come back soon!
