What to Visit in Petra: An Unforgettable One-Day Itinerary

Your journey to Petra is primarily to witness its spectacular ancient wonders. Given the vastness of the site, a well-planned itinerary is essential to maximize your experience. Below is a detailed play-by-play of our successful one-day exploration, complete with practical tips to help you navigate Petra like a seasoned adventurer.

7:00 AM: Early Start at the Petra Entrance

While an early wake-up call might not sound appealing, I promise you, arriving at the Petra entrance right when it opens is absolutely worth it. The early morning light offers magical photographic opportunities, and you’ll experience the initial parts of the site with fewer crowds. To save precious time, ensure you have your Jordan Pass ready. This pass not only covers your Petra entry fee but also includes visa fees for many nationalities, allowing you to bypass ticket lines entirely.

The walk through the Siq, the majestic narrow canyon leading to Petra, takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how frequently you pause to admire the stunning rock formations and capture photos. The morning light filtering into the Siq is simply perfect, creating dramatic shadows and illuminating the ancient pathways. With very few people around, you’ll feel like you’re discovering this ancient passage for the first time.

7:30 AM: The Treasury (Al-Khazneh) Unveiled

Emerging from the shadowy depths of the Siq, you’ll be met with an absolutely breathtaking sight: The Treasury (Al-Khazneh). This iconic facade, intricately carved into the sandstone cliff, is even more magnificent in person. In the early morning, the soft, golden light illuminates its details beautifully, and while there might be a few early birds, the crowds are significantly smaller than later in the day. This is your prime window for capturing those postcard-perfect, Instagram-worthy shots without throngs of people. Spend ample time here, marveling at its grandeur from various ground perspectives.

PRO TIP: The Treasury Viewpoint Hike

After you’ve captured plenty of photos from ground level, consider hiring a local guide to take you to a panoramic viewpoint above the Treasury. These informal guides often approach visitors near the Treasury. Negotiate the price, aiming for no more than 5 JOD per person. Be aware that this is a steep, unrailed hike up the sandstone, requiring good physical condition and careful footing. The reward, however, is an unparalleled, bird’s-eye view of the Treasury, offering a truly unique perspective on this ancient wonder.

8:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Journey Towards the Monastery

Leave the Treasury behind and begin your walk towards the Monastery (Ad Deir), which is the furthest major monument within the park and requires a significant trek. This path will take you past a series of incredible sights. You’ll encounter the grand Theatre, carved into the mountainside, offering a glimpse into Nabataean public life. Further along, the elaborate Royal Tombs loom majestically in the distance, their intricate facades a testament to the wealth and power of Petra’s rulers. Continue through the Street of Facades, where smaller tombs line the path, and then stroll along the ancient Colonnaded Street, once a bustling commercial hub.

PRO TIP: Navigating Local Vendors

As you make your way towards the Monastery, you’ll frequently encounter local guides offering camel or mule rides, as well as vendors selling trinkets and souvenirs. While their persistence can be constant throughout your visit, a polite “no, thank you” is usually sufficient. If you do decide to take a ride, remember to haggle for a fair price. Engaging with locals can be part of the experience, but be firm if you’re not interested.

9:30 AM: Ascent to the Monastery

You’ll eventually reach the base of the approximately 850 stairs that lead up to the Monastery. This ascent is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Take a moment here to hydrate, refuel with a snack, and mentally prepare for the climb. Pace yourself, take breaks, and enjoy the ever-changing views as you ascend.

PRO TIP: Independent Hiking to the Monastery

Don’t be misled by claims from some locals that you need a guide to hike to the Monastery. This is a common tactic to solicit business. The path is clearly marked, and it is perfectly safe and permissible to make the climb independently. Trust your map and enjoy the freedom of your own pace.

10:00 AM: The Majestic Monastery (Ad Deir)

After conquering the stairs, a final turn around a massive boulder will reveal the spectacular Monastery. This colossal structure, even larger than the Treasury, is arguably just as impressive, if not more so, due to its remote location and panoramic views. It tends to be less crowded than the Treasury, allowing for a more serene and contemplative experience. The vistas of the surrounding Petra canyon from this vantage point are truly breathtaking. We found ourselves lingering longer than planned, simply soaking in the incredible atmosphere and sweeping landscapes.

11:00 AM: Descent and Museum Stop

Begin your descent back down the stairs towards the museum, located at the bottom. This area provides an excellent opportunity to grab a bite to eat at one of the small cafes, replenish your water supply, or simply take a well-deserved rest. From the museum, you have the option to head straight back towards the exit, but I highly recommend dedicating some time to explore the magnificent Royal Tombs.

11:45 AM: Explore the Royal Tombs

The Royal Tombs are a collection of grand, multi-storied facades carved into the side of Jabal al-Khubtha mountain, offering some of the most striking architectural details in Petra. They include the Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Palace Tomb. These tombs are not only visually stunning but also provide incredible vantage points for panoramic views of the entire Petra canyon, stretching across the ancient city. Take your time to explore their intricate details and soak in the expansive vistas.

1:00 PM: Return Journey to the Treasury

Begin your leisurely stroll back towards the Treasury. At this point in the day, the sun will be high and intense, so ensure you have plenty of water and wear appropriate sun protection. The walk from the Royal Tombs back to the Treasury will take approximately 45 minutes, allowing you to re-appreciate the sights you passed earlier in a different light and with a new perspective.

1:45 PM: Final Glimpse of the Treasury

Arrive back at the Treasury, likely to find it bustling with crowds. You can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing you captured its serene beauty earlier in the morning. Take one last moment to admire this architectural masterpiece, then bid adieu to its grandeur.

2:00 PM: Exit Through the Siq

Make your way back through the magnificent Siq, reflecting on the incredible journey you’ve just completed. The walk out allows for a different appreciation of the canyon’s scale and beauty.

2:30 PM: Well-Deserved Relaxation

Arrive back at your hotel, kick off your shoes, and celebrate your successful exploration of Petra with a cold beer and a hearty plate of hummus – a perfect end to an extraordinary day!

Petra by Night: A Magical Candlelit Experience

For those with an extra evening in Wadi Musa, Petra by Night offers a truly magical and distinct experience. While your Jordan Pass does not cover this event (the entrance fee is typically around 15 JOD), it’s highly recommended if your schedule permits. The experience begins around 8:00 PM at the park entrance, where you’ll join a group for a silent, candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury. The path is dimly lit by thousands of candles, creating an ethereal glow and allowing you to marvel at the stars above.

Upon reaching the Treasury, which is illuminated solely by more candles, find a comfortable spot on the rugs laid out. I suggest trying to get a front-row seat to fully immerse yourself. If you’re hoping for clear photos, set up your tripod quickly before camera flashes become distracting. A short ceremony unfolds, often featuring traditional Bedouin music played on a flute or oud, accompanied by storytelling and complimentary tea. The entire experience, including the walk to and from the Siq, lasts approximately two hours, offering a truly unforgettable perspective of Petra bathed in the soft glow of candlelight.
