Seamless Arrival and Transportation to Your Wadi Rum Camp
Reaching the mystical landscapes of Wadi Rum is an adventure in itself, typically commencing from Jordan’s ancient city of Petra, approximately a two-hour drive to the south. Travelers have several convenient options for this journey: you can opt for the flexibility of driving yourself, take a cost-effective bus service, or enjoy the ease of hiring a private driver, perhaps through a reputable service like Local Trips. Regardless of your chosen method, your desert expedition officially begins at the Wadi Rum Village Visitors Center. Here, an entrance fee is required, though it is conveniently waived if you hold a valid Jordan Pass, a highly recommended investment for exploring Jordan’s many wonders.
The journey into the heart of Wadi Rum is exclusive; you must be escorted by a local Bedouin guide. This is a crucial logistical point to remember upon arrival at the Visitors Center. While the system might appear informal to an outsider, it’s an authentic part of the Bedouin way of life. Having a driver who speaks Arabic proved incredibly helpful for us, as it simplified the process of locating our designated guide amidst the bustling activity. Though initial coordination can sometimes feel chaotic, rest assured, everything eventually falls into place, and you’ll soon be embarking on your desert adventure.
Once we successfully connected with our Bedouin guide, we bid farewell to our initial driver and hopped into the back of a rugged 4×4 jeep. This transition marks the true beginning of your desert immersion. Our chosen accommodation, Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp, offered an all-inclusive package that featured both a thrilling 4×4 jeep tour and a traditional camel ride. Arriving around noon, our guide whisked us away on a scenic 20-minute drive from the Visitors Center directly to the camp, allowing us ample time to settle in and prepare for the day’s explorations.
Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp: A Sanctuary in the Sands
I cannot overstate my recommendation for Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp. This exceptional camp masterfully blends authentic desert charm with unparalleled comfort and luxury. It comprises 25 thoughtfully designed tents and unique “bubbles,” complemented by a spacious dining area and a comfortable communal sitting tent. I personally opted for a traditional tent, preferring the deep, uninterrupted darkness of the desert night over the potential light pollution from the moon or stars that the transparent “bubbles” might allow, ensuring a truly restful sleep.
Our traditional tent was astonishingly spacious, feeling more like a lavish suite than a typical desert dwelling. It featured a supremely comfortable king-sized bed, a cozy sofa, elegant end tables, and, crucially for the desert climate, efficient air conditioning. The en-suite bathroom was equally impressive, boasting a refreshing rain shower and a stylish vanity. Perhaps the most captivating feature was our private front porch, which offered an expansive, unobstructed vista of the entire camp and the surrounding desert, making for truly unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. The combination of modern amenities with an authentic desert setting made our stay exceptionally comfortable and memorable.

Once you are nestled deep within Wadi Rum, your dining experience becomes exclusively tied to your camp, offering a unique opportunity to savor authentic Bedouin cuisine. Initially, I harbored a few uncertainties about what to expect from desert camp food. However, after meeting the passionate chef and the charismatic concierge – who bore a striking resemblance to a Caribbean pirate, adding to the camp’s unique character – all my doubts vanished. It quickly became evident that every meal at Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp would be prepared with the utmost care and quality.
Happy Hour: Desert Refreshments
Following our exhilarating jeep tour, a welcome respite awaited in the form of happy hour. Guests were offered a choice of comforting hot tea or a local Jordanian beer for an additional 5 JOD. While the beer might not win any international awards for its taste – perhaps comparable to a simple gas station brew – after a day under the scorching desert sun, it truly tasted like liquid gold, providing an immensely satisfying refreshment. The hot tea, on the other hand, offered a genuine taste of Bedouin hospitality, a perfect way to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures.
Dinner: The Unforgettable Zarb Experience
Let me reiterate: Jordanian cuisine consistently ranks among the finest in the world, and the dining experience at Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp was no exception. Dinner was a lavish meze-style spread centered around the legendary Bedouin barbecue known as Zarb. This ancient culinary tradition involves slow-cooking meats and vegetables in an underground earth oven, infusing them with an unparalleled smoky flavor and tenderness. We had the incredible privilege of witnessing the chef ceremoniously unearthing the Zarb, brimming with succulent chicken, tender lamb, and perfectly roasted vegetables. The enticing aroma alone was enough to make any backyard barbecue pale in comparison.
For dinner, guests gathered in the beautifully adorned dining tent, which perfectly captured the rustic elegance of the desert. Food was served buffet-style, inviting everyone to sample the rich variety of dishes. The barbecue lamb, in particular, was absolutely divine – melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavor. The dining space itself was a highlight, fostering a communal and relaxed atmosphere that perfectly complemented the desert surroundings. Adding to the entertainment, the chef occasionally delighted us with energetic dances, making the meal an even more immersive cultural experience.
Breakfast: A Serene Desert Morning
On the morning of our departure, a delicious buffet-style breakfast awaited us. The spread included a comforting selection of teas and coffees, an assortment of freshly baked pastries, vibrant fresh fruits, and traditional foul (fava bean stew). My favorite part of the morning was savoring my coffee outside the tent, watching in awe as the first rays of the sun slowly transformed the desert mountains, painting them in an ever-changing palette of warm hues. It was a peaceful and picturesque start to the day, offering one last moment of tranquility before heading back into the bustling world.

The Exhilarating Jeep Tour: Deep into the Desert
As mentioned earlier, an exhilarating jeep tour was a fantastic inclusion in our one-night stay at Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp. These tours typically last around three hours, but if you’re keen to witness a spectacular desert sunset, don’t hesitate to ask your Bedouin guide to extend the excursion. Your knowledgeable guide will expertly navigate the rugged terrain, taking you to a variety of incredible spots outside the main camp, each offering unique opportunities for exploration and photography.
During our tour, we had a blast experimenting with our drone, much to the amusement and interest of our Bedouin guides. They shared that they had previously encountered drones during the filming of “The Martian” in Wadi Rum, adding another layer of fascinating context to the landscape. We spent our time joyfully playing in the soft, red sand dunes, trekking through ancient canyons, and even conquering a few smaller mountains to gain panoramic views. Each stop offered a new perspective on this stunning, desolate beauty, from ancient Nabataean inscriptions to dramatic rock bridges, making every moment truly captivating.
The Traditional Camel Ride: A Mixed Experience
The camel ride was another activity included in our one-night stay package. While undeniably iconic and a quintessential desert experience, I must admit I wished I had skipped the full 45-minute journey. The ride, which proceeds in a single file across relatively flat terrain, proved to be surprisingly uncomfortable for its duration. If I were to do it again, I would simply take a few memorable photos atop a camel to capture the essence of the experience, then politely excuse myself. For those seeking an authentic cultural connection, a brief ride can be enriching, but be prepared for a somewhat bumpy and less-than-luxurious journey.
The Unforgettable Sunrise Excursion: A Moment of Pure Magic
I was almost hesitant to sign up for the sunrise excursion, given my distinct lack of enthusiasm for early mornings. However, I am profoundly glad we decided to go. For an additional 15 JOD, a Bedouin guide will take you to a prime viewing spot around 5:30 AM. Be warned, the desert mornings are surprisingly chilly, so packing warm layers is essential. Once you reach the designated sunrise location, your guide will expertly build a small fire, providing both warmth and a charming ambiance, and brew traditional Bedouin tea. You’ll then settle down on comfortable blankets, sipping hot tea as you witness one of nature’s most spectacular shows. Watching the first light creep over the horizon, painting the vast desert in hues of orange, pink, and gold, was truly one of the most gorgeous and profoundly rewarding moments of our entire trip to Jordan. It’s an experience that transcends mere sightseeing, offering a deep sense of peace and wonder.
