The thought of Charlie turning one brings a mix of joy and bittersweet emotions. My mind is constantly buzzing with ideas for how to commemorate this significant day, especially with the ongoing need for social distancing. The Thrill of Mobility: From Crawling to Cruising

This month brought one of the most exciting and transformative changes yet: Charlie is officially MOBILE! I vividly remember the day it happened. It was Father’s Day, a peaceful morning where Mr. B and I were still in bed, casually catching up on the news. Charlie was happily playing with her toys on the floor, seemingly content. Then, we heard an unexpected rustle coming from the closet. We exchanged a bewildered look, silently asking, “What on earth was that?” To our absolute astonishment, our little adventurer had made her way across the room, over to the hamper, and was gleefully pushing it around! It was a moment of pure shock and immense pride, a clear sign that our lives had just entered a thrilling new phase.

The moment Charlie became mobile, our home instantly transformed into a potential playground of hazards. We immediately shifted into full-on babyproofing mode. We were incredibly fortunate to have just completed our upstairs remodel, which meant many renovation tools and materials were still scattered around. Trying to contain a newly mobile baby amidst hammers, drills, paint cans, and various other construction paraphernalia was far from ideal. It became a tag-team effort for Mr. B and me; one of us would diligently put things away while the other kept a watchful eye on our determined little explorer.

Babyproofing can be an overwhelming task, but it’s absolutely essential once your little one starts to move. We tackled the basics first: covering all the electrical outlets with safety caps. The biggest challenge, however, proved to be finding the perfect baby gate. The market is flooded with options, and they certainly don’t come cheap! We spent hours researching, trying to decide between pressure-mounted and wall-mounted gates, considering different materials, and measuring our spaces. This whole process, I’ll admit, gave me a massive headache. Ultimately, we settled on a sturdy wall-mounted baby gate to secure our long living room space. It’s been a lifesaver, offering us peace of mind knowing that Charlie can explore safely within her designated area without any risk of escape.

Another quick, yet startling, change occurred when Charlie figured out how to pull herself up to stand in her crib. One morning, we walked into her room to find her proudly standing, gripping the rails, a huge grin on her face. While adorable, it gave us a huge scare, reminding us just how quickly babies develop. Charlie had her nine-month wellness appointment, and I’m thrilled to report that she passed with flying colors! It’s truly crazy to think that she was once a tiny 5 lbs 13 ounces, and now she’s a robust 20 lbs of pure joy and energy. The pediatrician was delighted with her progress, confirming she’s meeting all her developmental milestones. The only recommendation was to ensure she was getting enough iron in her diet. Iron is vital for a baby’s growth and cognitive development, and many babies can experience a dip in iron levels around this age.

To address this, I’ve consciously started incorporating more iron-rich foods into her meals. Ground beef, which she loves, has become a regular feature, as have various types of beans. I also sprinkle hemp seeds into her yogurt or oatmeal for an extra boost. It’s been a fun challenge to get creative with her meals, ensuring she maintains adequate iron levels while still enjoying a diverse and flavorful diet.

Charlie the Foodie: Exploring New Flavors

Speaking of food, I consider myself incredibly lucky because Charlie is an excellent eater. Phew! Meal times are generally a joyful experience, and she approaches new foods with curiosity and enthusiasm. Her mornings often start with a serving of fluffy scrambled eggs, which she devours with gusto. For lunch, a delicious and nutritious combination of mashed avocado, shredded chicken, and a dollop of hummus is usually a hit. Dinner is typically whatever leftovers we have from our own meal, slightly modified for her. She loves exploring different textures and flavors, making introducing new foods an exciting adventure rather than a struggle.

One amusing detail about Charlie’s meal experience is her inclusion of Juniper. For those wondering, Juniper is our beloved family dog, and she has developed a keen interest in Charlie’s mealtimes. Whether it’s patiently waiting for dropped morsels or trying to sneak a lick, Juniper adds an extra layer of entertainment (and occasionally, a sigh from me!) to our dining routine. It’s just another reminder of the vibrant, sometimes chaotic, life with a baby and a pet.

Summer Fun: Celebrating Independence Day and Outdoor Adventures

Our Tranquil Fourth of July

How was our Fourth of July? So much fun, and surprisingly peaceful! Denver often becomes a ghost town during major holidays as everyone flees to the mountains for a change of scenery. We decided to embrace the quiet and embarked on an easy hike in the beautiful foothills near a serene river. It was absolutely perfect. The fresh mountain air invigorated us, and Charlie absolutely loved being outdoors, babbling happily at the hikers who passed by. She seemed utterly enchanted by the sights and sounds of nature, pointing at trees and listening to the birds chirp.

A random, but important, note on our hiking gear: we still extensively use the Baby Bjorn Mini Carrier for Charlie. Its versatility is fantastic; we can easily turn it around, allowing her to face outwards and take in the world, or inwards so she can snuggle into Mr. B and conveniently nap if we’re out and about during her usual sleep times. It’s incredibly comfortable for both us and Charlie, making it our go-to choice for adventures big and small.

Beyond hiking, we also had the joy of hanging up a brand-new tree swing that my parents generously bought for her! Charlie absolutely adores swinging, especially when we push her really high. Her giggles fill the air, and her eyes sparkle with delight. Not only is it a fantastic source of entertainment, but it’s also a surprisingly effective way to keep her happily contained for a hot second while we catch our breath or tackle a quick chore.

Splashing into Summer: Pool Time Fun

Without a doubt, the absolute best part of summer so far has been watching Charlie splash around in her baby pool! Our little one is a true water baby; she absolutely adores it. She could sit in that pool, happily splashing and playing for hours on end if we let her. Her face lights up with pure joy as she slaps the water, sending little droplets flying. Seeing her incredibly happy smile, especially when she’s sporting one of her super cute swimsuits, fills my heart with an indescribable warmth. These simple moments of pure childhood delight are truly what summer memories are made of.

A Week Apart: The Emotional Rollercoaster of Separation

Recently, I had to leave Charlie for a full week, and I honestly anticipated it would be much harder than it actually was. I am eternally thankful that my mother was able to come and watch her. Having a trusted family member, especially one who knows Charlie so well and shares such a wonderful bond with her, made all the difference. Knowing she was in such loving and capable hands provided an immense sense of peace. If I had to leave her with a random stranger, I can confidently say my anxiety levels would have been through the roof.

The hardest part of the entire experience wasn’t the leaving, but the return. The moment I walked through the door and Charlie saw me, her little face crumpled, and instant tears welled up in her eyes. It was a raw, unfiltered expression of missing me, and it pierced my heart in the sweetest way possible. I immediately scooped her up, held her tight, and kissed those precious tears away. • Baby Pool + Swimmies: Amazon to the rescue once again! Our inflatable baby pool has been the highlight of our summer. Charlie’s love for water is undeniable, and this pool provides endless hours of splashing fun. I’m already envisioning setting this darn thing up in our living room this winter to keep her occupied when outdoor water play isn’t an option. Paired with some adorable ‘swimmies’ (her cute little swimsuits), it’s a guaranteed mood booster.
• Durable & Stylish Toddler Shoes: I’ve always felt a bit odd taking a baby outside without shoes, especially now that Charlie is on the move. My aversion to dirty feet probably plays a role! But finding the right shoes for a mobile baby can be tricky. Thankfully, I discovered these adorable and incredibly practical summer sandals at Target. They’ve held up beautifully against her crawling, cruising, and general exploring, providing comfort and protection for her busy little feet without sacrificing style.
