A Perfect Weekend Escape: From Beaver Creek’s Vintage Charm to Breckenridge’s High Peaks
The call of the mountains is undeniable, and this past weekend, Mr. B and I answered it with an exhilarating ski trip. It feels like just yesterday the season was kicking off, and now, almost unbelievably, we’re already bidding farewell to another fantastic ski season. Time truly does fly when you’re carving down pristine slopes and enjoying the crisp mountain air.
Trading the bustling city for the serene, snow-capped peaks was a much-needed change of scenery, especially after the whirlwind of last week’s events. The dramatic sixty-degree temperature difference was an absolute delight – a clear reminder of why I’m unequivocally a cold-weather enthusiast. There’s something incredibly invigorating about the chill on your cheeks and the promise of a warm lodge waiting after a day outdoors.
Join me as I recap our unforgettable mountain getaway, a perfect blend of adventure, camaraderie, and indulgent relaxation. Get ready for a detailed journey through our weekend, packed with laughter, delicious food, and the unique magic of Colorado’s premier ski resorts.
FRIDAY: The Scenic Drive and Italian Feast in Beaver Creek
As soon as the workday wrapped up on Friday, we set our sights on Beaver Creek. The late afternoon light was simply spectacular, casting a warm, golden glow over the landscape as we ascended into the mountains. I was behind the wheel, navigating the winding roads, while Mr. B, ever the patient partner to a blogger, diligently captured the breathtaking vistas. Such is the delightful reality of being married to someone constantly seeking that perfect shot for their next post – a life filled with spontaneous photo ops!
Our first order of business upon reaching town was a crucial stop at the grocery store. With a lively group awaiting our arrival, I knew a hearty, crowd-pleasing dinner was in order. Italian cuisine, with its comforting flavors and universal appeal, felt like the perfect choice to kick off our weekend retreat.
Back at the house, Listy and I happily took over the kitchen, with a delightful little helper in tow: her son, Chance, who is just incredibly cute and kept us entertained. Together, we whipped up a delicious Italian spread. The aroma of garlic bread toasting, fresh salad greens, and simmering sauce filled the air, promising a fantastic meal. Our dinner, featuring a vibrant salad, warm garlic bread, and wholesome whole wheat pasta, was an absolute hit with everyone. There’s nothing quite like sharing a home-cooked meal in the mountains, surrounded by cherished friends.
The evening unfolded perfectly, with lively conversations and an abundance of laughter. These gatherings truly remind me how much I cherish our “village” – that special circle of friends who feel like family. These are the moments that truly make a mountain getaway memorable, creating bonds and memories that last long after the snow has melted.
SATURDAY: Vintage Ski Races, Spring Skiing Adventures, and Mountain Indulgence
Saturday dawned bright and early, kicking off with another essential mission: gathering provisions for breakfast. Listy and I made a quick dash to the grocery store, knowing full well that feeding our lively “village” requires a significant spread. We aimed to fuel everyone up for a day packed with mountain activities. While I confess I was too ravenously hungry to snap photos of our incredible breakfast, rest assured it was a feast! Fluffy eggs, perfectly toasted bread, golden pancakes, and an array of decadent pastries – those “bad boys” loaded with frosting – were all part of the delicious equation, setting us up for an adventurous day in Beaver Creek.
Mmm, that frosting was absolutely divine!
Post-breakfast, the guys eagerly geared up for the main event of the morning: the Vintage Ski Races at Beaver Creek. Their outfits were nothing short of hysterical – a vibrant homage to ski fashion of yesteryear, complete with retro goggles, brightly colored one-piece suits, and classic wooden skis. The energy was electric, a perfect blend of competitive spirit and playful nostalgia. No epic day with this crew is truly complete without a bit of “bro love,” which, in this case, meant a surprise “icing” incident – a playful tradition involving a Smirnoff Ice. The camaraderie and laughter were contagious.
The weather, however, was in full “spring skiing” mode, meaning it wasn’t quite cooperating with our picture-perfect visions. Spring in the mountains often brings a peculiar mix of rain and snow, creating challenging yet strangely exhilarating conditions. Despite the unpredictable elements, everyone managed to have a fantastic time, embracing the quirky nature of late-season skiing.
Mr. B’s vintage outfit was so authentically over-the-top that I couldn’t help but stare, thinking, “OMG, you look utterly ridiculous!” His dedication to the theme was truly commendable and provided endless entertainment for the spectators.
The highlight of the races for me was undoubtedly capturing Max, Listy’s husband, in action during his event. His performance was truly legendary, a moment that seriously deserved a spot on ESPN’s Top 10 plays. It was that epic! His incredible feat even earned him a feature in the Vail Daily – a testament to how truly awesome his run was. *[Note: Original video embeds for Max’s event and Powder Eights have been removed as per instructions. In a live blog, these would be embedded using modern, SEO-friendly methods like responsive YouTube iframes.]*
Before Listy, Katie, Chance, and I headed to the Blue Moose for some well-deserved pizza and beer, I managed to catch the guys performing some impressive Powder Eights. While the snow wasn’t pristine powder, the spirit of “spring skiing” dictates that it’s all about getting creative and doing random, crazy stunts when the conditions are less than ideal. Their synchronized turns and playful antics were a joy to watch.
At the Blue Moose, we settled in for a fantastic meal. I grabbed a refreshing IPA, and we collectively devoured an incredible cheese pizza loaded with an assortment of my favorite goodies: tender artichokes, juicy tomatoes, and aromatic garlic. On the side, we indulged in what I can confidently say are the best cheese fries ever! My rationale? Having just completed a marathon, I figured I had earned myself a week of guilt-free indulgence. Sometimes, it feels wonderfully liberating to be a little bit naughty with your food choices.
After our satisfying meal, we all headed back to the house for an evening of friendly competition and relaxation. The night was filled with spirited rounds of Wii games and a few classic drinking games. Despite countless attempts, I’m still notoriously bad at beer pong, or “caps” as we call it – some things never change!
Despite not hitting the slopes myself that day, the sheer energy of being in the mountains and participating in all the festivities left me utterly exhausted. I called it an early night, craving the comfort of my bed. I know, I can be a bit of a lightweight sometimes, but these mountain days, even as a spectator, are surprisingly demanding!
SUNDAY: Girls’ Day Out on Breckenridge Slopes and the Journey Home
Sunday morning began with a strategic division of labor: Listy and I left the boys to handle the cleaning and packing, while we made a swift departure for Breckenridge. Our mission? To hit the slopes with our wonderful friend, Katie. There’s a special kind of joy and camaraderie that comes with skiing with these amazing women – it’s an experience I always cherish.
Breckenridge greeted us with brisk winds, but true to form, we were determined to find the best snow. We navigated our way to the higher elevations, where we discovered some surprisingly decent powder, perfect for some exhilarating turns. We even dared to ski through a kiddy terrain park, embracing the mantra of “go big or go home!” It was a playful, laugh-filled descent, reminding us that skiing isn’t just about challenging terrain, but also about embracing the fun and unexpected.
After a quick but satisfying bite to eat on the mountain, our fantastic weekend came to a close, and we began our journey back to Denver. The transition from the peaceful, snowy peaks back to city life always feels a bit abrupt. The reality of the upcoming week quickly set in. Mr. B is out of town, and I anticipate tomorrow at work will be a complete “sh*t show” with tax season in full swing. Ah, the joys of adulthood!
Despite the looming work week, our mountain escape was truly rejuvenating. It was the perfect way to cap off the ski season, filled with laughter, delicious food, and cherished moments with our amazing “village.” I hope you all have a wonderful and productive week ahead!
